I was fiddling about with ponies in Inkscape (still not satisfied enough to SHOW my work, or take requests) and I made an Ellis pony. I'm probably not going to show it until it's better though.

Is there some sort of mystic initiation process you have to go through to become a ponytar artist on this thread?

You must start by collecting the juiciest and reddest apples you can find. Then you must scale the highest mountains in asian and locate the beautiful temple decorated with diamonds. There you will find a monk; give him the apples and then wait three days and three nights. He will present you with an unbaked Pie. You must then located the largest thunderstorm and find the exact center. It is at that spot a bolt of lightning will strike and you must bake the pie with that lightning. Afterward you must travel to the amazon forest, following the butterflies to find a shaman smoking on a bubble pipe. The shaman will present you with a magic spork which you will use to take one bite of the pie. you will enter a dreamlike state and it is then that you will meet the lady they call Faust who will ask you three questions. Answer to her satisfaction and she will impart upon you the knowledge of ponies and you will have what you need to become a ponytar artist.

Bluster in and take a request. I'm not actually a ponytarist, but with enough quick talking you can make people think you are!
Then complete the request and submit it for feedback. I believe Khosan is working on a guide, but if you want any advice feel free to ask me or someone. Or something.

Biggest problems I can see: The left eye overlaps the edge. You need to move it a little, or add more edge.

And the mouth looks oddly placed... not good enough at art to know how to fix that one.

I like it.
The mouth is an odd shape because it's drawn from a different angle to what I used for Haleyponi. The mouth should generally curve, and always touch the side of the muzzle in a side on picture. The hair looks like it needs some work: I can attest to how hard it is to get the hang of inkscape, but try smoothing the lines out by double clicking on the shape, clicking on one of the individual points and then adjusting the blue "handles" on the side.
I can give more feedback, if you'd like.

I find the hair generally looks better as several separate shapes, as opposed to just one. I tend to draw eyes using the bezier curve tool: I tend to trace the perfectly circular eyes, although I find angry eyes a lot easier to draw. Maybe try sketching the hair in photoshop or gimp and then draw over it in inkscape? I find it flows better are a result: while poni hairstyles are somewhat gravity defying normally, Therkla's does seem unnaturally so. The line of the bottom of the head shouldn't extent all the way over the neck, and I'd move the line on the right ear down and inwards. Also, the connection between the line of the neck and the chest is a little pointy.

I can appreciate the laptop tablet problem, though. I can't get inkscape to work with my tablet and I'm now working on a laptop with a tiny touchpad.

What did you use to resize the avi version of Therkla?

I has another request. I'll need a bigger version of this one, because it's a character in the Bridal Shores RP. I don't care who does it, as long as it's good.

Gender: Female
Type: Earth Pony
Coat color: Cherry Red
Mane color and style: Long and straight. As yellow as the sun.
Eye color: Reddish-Purple.
Cutie mark: None. *GASP*
Pose: I'll leave that up to the artist. She ran away from home form an abusive mother to look for her sister, and her two best friends are a mage and a wanna-be superhero. Maybe that will help. Her special talent is being a good friend and being there for ponies who need it.
Expressions: Same as Pose. Maybe a comforting smile?
Accessories or costumes: She wears a star-shaped flower blossom in her mane, pink with yellow veins in the middle.

I guess part of it comes with familiarity though - I can just about cobble together artwork in gimp with the touchpad if I'm too lazy to hook up the tablet now that I've had some practice with it but I still prefer something that resembles a pen.
I opened the svg file up in gimp and then rescaled it to 120px width and saved as a png. I guess I could have cropped it a little closer first... there's probably also a neater way to rescale in inkscape that I've forgotten about...

I pretty much just use the pen tool. Trace out the shape with straight lines, delete most of the points so it forms a curve, up the line thickness. If you've got the time, press Ctrl+Alt+C and adjust the points for a better looking line. In particular you can move the points at the very end to make a tapered effect, just like in the cartoons!

I don't normally use a laptop for these things, but the last two requests I've done mostly on laptops due to travelling. Normally I have access to a mouse, fortunately. Your avi scale picture looks weirdly blurry (is the word aliased? I'm not sure), which is strange 'cos I resize things using the same method and I don't seem to have the same problem. Can't you use the autocrop tool in gimp for the closest cropping?

Cutie mark: You see that bunny-like thing my avatar is clutching to her bosom? That is called a Tiamite, and there should totally be a Tiamite as her cutie mark.

Wow, that was quick!

Changes ... well, there are a couple of things. Can you make her coat a little brighter? Like ... like Lily. (aka "The horror!!! *faints*") Maybe make the flower a little more vibrant?

Also, maybe make the mane and tail a little ... more interesting? Maybe more like Applecore's? (See the list of background ponies.) Maybe not have it covering the eyes so much?

Also, the expression seems a little ... off to me. I was thinking something like a comforting smile.

(Oh, also the back leg also looks a little ... odd, but that's not a big deal.)

I'm not an avatarist, but I actually quite like your style. It's different and not as rounded/cutesy as other ponies usually are. Possibly due to her expression I like her eyes and eyebrows. (I've only just realized that ponies don't usually have eyebrows )

Oh, wow, Pony Week already. And we're still behind on ponytar requests in the arts and crafts thread. Dunno if we'll make it through them all in time.

Well, anyways, time to start collecting ponies for the great big banner. Here's what I want:

Send an email to [email protected]. The subject line should include the word "Pony" somewhere.

Include as attachments as many ponytars as you can. I want high-resolution versions (at least 500 pixels on one dimension), or better yet the original svg file. Ask your artist before sending to me; they might have the svg laying around and we prevent a lot of double submissions. Send multiple emails or compress the files if you have to; I'd rather sort through a bunch of emails than go through file-hosting sites if at all possible.

With any luck I'll be able to get it put together within a few days of the end of the theme week.
