This may sound odd, but this is the sort of thing where I wish I could have been there. I wish I could have interfered. To stop the assailants, or make sure the woman was okay, or something.

...bah. I'll take my hero complex somewhere else. I'm glad they've got their suspects, and I hope that the guilty parties get nailed to the wall. Not because it's an LGBT issue, or because it's a hate crime, but because I hold a special place in my heart for anyone who can hurt another person unprovoked. A special place on fire.

Hey all, I'm writing an essay on the importance of minority voices in literature, and I'd appreciate some help with it. I was wondering if any of you could share your experiences with gay literature and how it affected your own or others' views of of LGBT+ people. Also, why you think it is important that people "hear that voice through its literary expression."

The best example of a gay character in literature I can think of is actually the Magician's Guild series. It's not passed of as 'Oh, it's okay in this world.' It is, in universe, a big thing. But the protagonists think of it as not a bad thing. It shows different societies, different cultures, different thought, and it shows a happy relationship too.

I'd call it important simply for balance. LGBT may be the minority, but uncounted books are out there for straight people. There should be some for us too.

I actually haven't really read all that much LGBT literature. I mean like, I have read works with LGBT characters in it, but never where the main character explores their sexuality, or gender issues.

I haven't read much LGBT literature myself, either. However, one thing I will point out; I much prefer stories where a character can be gay and it makes no difference whatsoever. It's like having green as a favourite colour; yes, it's a part of the character, but it really shouldn't be the be-all end-all of the character, let alone the plot. Sometime's a person's sexually just isn't relevant to a story and doesn't have to be, regardless of what it is. Gah, I can't think of a more articulate way of putting it, and I can has need for sleep now. =_=

So, I'm psuedo-here, kind of been flipping out with another nice depressive episode.

Anyways, Kitty may be getting a girlfriend! This is exciting and scary all at once...we're sort of at the point where we're messing around a bit and hanging out more and seeing if we're interested in more. (Neither of us object to casual sex/friends-with-benefits type relationships, and we are making sure to keep everything safe!)

ION: I have made an index of my really close school friends. 11/13 are lesbian, bisexual, or not straight. The other two are people that I know more in passing (although they are still my close friends). Is this weird? I feel like if I were in a clique, or if they existed in very defined forms at my school, I would be in the gay clique. Which is pretty awesome.

Hey. You may remember I mentioned I had a crush on a fellow from my theater group and wasn't sure how to ask him if he was interested (mmm... ginger beard...). Lix at least knows he's been in my thoughts a lot more than that.

I suggested we should hang out. He suggested a movie (but neither of us really watches movies as it turns out). So now, he's coming over to my house for drinks and goofing off later this week. Just the two of us.

I have no gaydar. I have no idea how to read people. I half think we were both trying to edge around asking each other on a date without being obvious about it, but I DON'T KNOW!!! I don't know if I should try putting the moves on him.

That said, I have a crush on him. If he isn't already, the instant I make a move he will be exclusively interested in women, nothing, or particularly fragrant fungi.

Wow, it's nice to hear so much postitive-type stuff here after all that bad news. I'm happy for you folks.

Golentan - maybe you should find a way to ask him what he's into? Like try to fit in something (such as a tv show) that has a gay character or theme and just sort of bring it up off-handedly. That way you can find out if he's gay or not without directly asking him. Then again, I apparently am horrible at dealing with people at all, so maybe this advice is better for finding out if he's some sort of mycophile... or just shouldn't be used at all.
