Good point, I had forgotten about the details of the prophecy, and I think I'm getting the PWWP confused with Azor Ahai reborn again, and there's probably another I'm forgetting. I guess there's enough prophetic titles to go around, assuming they aren't -all- referring to a single person.

Here's a thought: The prophecy actually did refer to Rhaego, and it was either wrong or otherwise made obsolete by his not being born.

Quite possible. It would be a very Martin thing to do to subvert the high-fantasy gentlemen's-agreement that a prophecy just has to come true.

Does it say the Prince needs to continue the dynasty? Perhaps the Prince sacrifices him/herself to defeat the others and another (maybe Jon if R+L=J is true) takes the throne.

Well, you know one thing this world could seriously benefit from? Adoptive dynasties. They weren't called the "Good Emperors" for nothing.

It's also possible - though unlikely, I'll admit - that Mirri Maz Duur was just rubbing a little false hopelessness into the wound. Or alternatively, maybe the series ends with a colorful apocalypse wherein Dany gets pregnant.

I do. I mean, even if Dany comes, the smallfolk are still screwed. I guess the kingdom will be saved, and there will be survivors.

But the suffering to the civilians is going to be unprecedented regardless of what happens.

Well, okay, the precedent for suffering in Westeros is pretty high, what with entire kingdoms falling to the Others, kings and their men freezing to death in their castles, mothers smothering their babes instead of letting them starve, etc.

So, maybe not quite that bad. But still pretty bad!

Maybe Rhaego was the chosen one from either of the prophecies but that status is transferable on death.

It would be hilarious if "born of smoke and salt" refered to Davos' near death between books 2 and 3.

On somewhat of a tangent, given the success of the TV series does anyone else think we may start seeing other networks try doing fantasy TV series? I mean there haven't been many attempts at doing fantasy on TV before and this is one of the first to be really successful.

You mean besides the ones we already have? There are at least three concurrent ones, those being.

Wait there is another butchery and mockery of the Arthurian legend going on? I was still waiting for the new Season of Merlin.

(Yes, I actually like Merlin. I like it because the actors are brilliant, because the setting is race blind - no one notices Gwen's skin color and no one cares about it - and because it doesn't even pretend its being faithful to anything. On the whole Merlin makes it obvious that the writers are just having a run at being silly and thats pretty fun.)

So, is Camelot's butchery in the same sort of light hearted romp way or is it more a Grim-Dark failure at making the an Arthurian legend?

Depends on how you define "storm."

Remember that the third book is the "Storm of Swords" and such would certainly describe the rebellion 15 years ago into which, presumably, Jon was born at the Tower of Joy.

Camelot is a stupid title for a King Arthur story. There's a reason they never go there in Monty Python. All the interesting stuff happens away from there.

I agree entirely. Plus, the show is focusing on the same cast of characters yet again. Just once, I want to see something other than the whole Arthur-Lancelot-Guinevere dynamic. Balin and Balan perhaps, or Tristram, or Lamorak, or Arthur's rise to power as seen through the lense of Pellinore. I'd also love to see Palomides at some point, but that's marginally less likely than Lamorak. Gawaine and family would be another interesting point, particularly once one considers Gareth.

But no, we get yet another regurgitation of the Arthur-Lancelot-Guinevere dynamic. Urgh.

Isn't that a historical drama rather than a fantasy series?

EDIT: Also to people who've read all the series so far, I've just finished the second book does Ramsay Bolton show up again? Because that guy scares me more than anything else in the series.

You aren't done with the Boltons, some of which are much, much scarier than Ramsay. Given that they have the second most grotesque* heraldry in the Seven Kingdoms, expect much worse than what you've seen.

Compared to the likes of the Bloody Mummers, Gregor Clegane, Lorch, and etc. Those guys are monsters and everybody knows it and flat out says it.

The Boltons, while certainly people will keep them at arm's length and look at them sideways, are generally considered to be upstanding (in general terms) members of the community, that have an unsavory history.

Either that, or nobody's willing to say bad things about them for fear of losing their skins and Robb's just an idiot.
