Default Music to set the mood of the far realm.

Hello. I am DMing a group who are about to go into a temple to the strange entitys in the far realm, and I would like some music to set the mood. Anybody have any good choices in music to get the whole 'otherworldly' feeling going in a group? Even better if it includes quiet ominous chanting .

Whatever it is, play it backwards. Yes, it will sound dissonant and horrible. The Far Realm is not a nice place, nor a place that plays nice with human[oid] comprehension. Bonus points if you include "Never Gonna Give You Up" and play it backwards. Double bonus points to any player who recognizes it anyway.

I find this music omnious and scary, and I think it sounds even scarier backwards.

The TitanQuest computer game came with a soundtrack CD which I think would suit your purposes well.

Oh yeah, diablo 1 is great.

Baldur's Gate 2 also has some nice tracks. (But all quite short.)

I also love the Quake soundtrack for such occassion. (I think it was even recommended in a Dragon article once)

Silent Hill should also do a good job. But someone did seem to have put a lot of time in blocking almost all Silent Hill music for Europe on youtube, so you'd have to hunt for some samples on your own.

It's surprisingly recognizable. Also, not really creepy enough. Maybe if you slowed it down, or used it for a "We're in a really weird place and we're adventuring and it's awesome!" segment.

Also, Piano for Children - Jonny Greenwood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_HTUDQlXak) start at 4:30 and you get some very creepy
sounds that have this huge open feel to them.

Schoenberg: Pierrot Lunaire doesn't have chanting but it does have some very strange sounding melodies sung in german. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veUJx...eature=related)

American Mcgee's Alice is definately going onto my list.

If you want something really disturbing, then you should try out soundtrack from Akira: 1, 2, 3, 4.

If you want something creepy, but not that insane, then Kilar did a great score for Dracula. Soundtrack from The Witcher might be good as well.

This might be interesting for an opening given the context.

Eversion hits just the right spot, but 8-bit music might not fit a regular RPG session. Yet, if you want to get them really on the edge, play this quietly in the background on a loop.

    Level 8 is also cool.

Also, Eversion is the only existing Video Game set in the Far Realm.

If you want ominous chanting, try this song by Nox Arcana. Or this one.

Musica Cthulhiana has also some freaky background compositions. There's some free tracks on their website as well.

"Outside the ordered universe, that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes."

read that to them and let their mind fill it in

i really dont want to know what music composed in the far realm would sound like.

Rite of Spring might be good.

Basically, it needs to be as disturbing and unearthly as possible. You cannot feel comfortable listening to it.

I'd say some real dark ambient (i.e. the genre dark ambient, not just ambient that is dark).

If your players ask tell them it is just one piano played in some unusual ways.
