Also, what's with the tech levels in this verse. If the first portal put Aperture about equal with the Combine, Portal 2 makes it look like they're actually ahead. Considering that we know what Black Mesa looked like at about the same time, it makes the lore kinda incoherent.

I'm not sure if I'd say they are ahead, yes they have a very impresive facility but that's only of the scale of one place, not a vast star farring empire (and remeber what we saw of the combine untill now is pretty much just a small isolated colonial force on what was considered a troublesome but primitive planet, vortesence know what they might have stashed in reserve back at homme.)
Only thing is that somehow the cpombine never managed to devellop short range telporter for somme reason, wich is why they were so interested in either one of the scientist from Black messa or the Borealis. (wich is somewhat odd considereing they were controlling the Vortigaunt in HL1 and they had teleporters, so not sure what to make of that.)

That said, it seems tha tbeing more or less blessledly free from any ethic or maney related constraints, the Apperture science achieved a level of technology way over the rest of the half life universe earth (wich is rather elevated by virute on working byt he rules of video game sience, aka rule of cool.), it's just than none of it ever made it out of the apperture facility.

That said, it seems rather simple, being more or less blessledly free from any ethic or maney related constraint, Apperture science had a level of technology way ovet he rest of the half life universe earth (wich is rather elevated by virute on working byt he rules of video game sience, aka rule of cool.), it's just than none of it ever made it out of the apperture facility.

Which goes to show you, Cave Johnson was awesome at science, horrible at monetizing science.

Imagine if one of the 'bean counters' had been turned into GLaDOS instead of Caroline.

The combine didin't control the Vort's in HL1, that was a diffrent alien on the Xen border world. the combine in HL2 have about as much control over the Vort's as they do over the humans. the Vort's are just less agressive.

On my second commentary playthrough I waited around before shooting it, to see what would happen if you didn't shoot it. Well, besides dying if you wait long enough, you get this gem from Wheatley:

Actually, I was still stuck on 'BOOBY TRAP THE STALEMATE BUTTON'. Then I noticed the moon. I hesitated for a second, but that was more disorientation than resistance. I looked at the Moon, said, 'What would Valve make me do?' and found the answer. Seriously, Wheatley trapping the stalemate was the only time I've ever been disoriented enough to not notice what was going on in any game.

Mostly, I saw the white-grey or the moon, and the game had already conditioned me to think "this color equals portals", so my finger went for the button instinctively. By the time the gun fired its shot I knew what would happen, because the moon rocks thing had come back to my mind, but the first reflex was just a color association, to be honest
