That is weird, Serp. Seems like an odd way for a bird to decompose. In my experience the bones tend to go with the rest of them. Any idea how that one came about?

Nope. And when I found it, it was upside down next to the path at uni. That bird is well and truly stuck in there.
I think it died in the nest in the tree, the parents abandoned it, the nest - unmaintained - slowly lost shape, and then long after the bird died and decomposed it got blown out of the tree (it's been windy lately).
One of my colleagues pointed out the squished beak (which I'd noticed) and the big hole in the skull (which I had not), and postulated a more sinister end than merely exposure or starvation.

No, I don't think that works. I'm pretty sure it fell out after it decomposed, and it would've been too light to squish it like that.

Then my best guess is sibling-cide by a nest-mate right around the time the nestmate fledged. That would leave the corpse intact and in the nest.
