Unfortunately, the fluff reads that there aren't that many left. Most of them were destroyed in the Khadoran invasion of Llael.

Have I mentioned that I HATE that model?

The next one should go easier, since I know all the problems I'll run into. (If I can remember them between now and the time I put #2 together.)

Indeed, I'm putting some together now and they're great. The only thing I'd change would be to make the helmet's 'beak' more prominant (like Swooping Hawks) as it seems a bit stubby at the moment, and put five feathered wings in as I don't like the bat ones!
Still, with the number of parts available I'm not complaining too much.

    Thanks.

It started with a round peg on each foot. Had I left both of those on, I'm not certain it would even stand up. I took the right one off, and kept the left one on. (Then I did the Hokey-Pokey and spun myself around. ) There is a rock under each foot, but they were put there after it was already on the base. It looked even more awkward with inexplicable spaces under its feet. The next one should be posed better, since I know the ins-and-outs of it after the first one. (As in: take off both pegs, file off the keys on its legs, raise its left side up on a rock or something so it can hold its shield in front of it, etc.).

Another WIP picture from me! I swear, one day I'll finish something.

It's the Dreadknight for my Grey Knights army. I'm replacing the baby carrier with a Dreadnought sarcophagus. It actually fits together really well. Still got plenty of work to do though.

those new minis are looking good. The only thing I have to point out is that it looks like your washes are a little too heavy. The really dark and splotchy looking areas in the recesses are what I'm talking about. Using a little less wash might clear that up. I'd also suggest hitting them with a matte or satin varnish because the shininess is distracting from your work.

I've been doing some of my ork boyz and I've got a nice straightforward paint scheme that's pretty quick and I think looks decent. I'll get some pictures up soon - my girlfriend's left her camera here and my flatmate's got a new lens for his big camera which he's been trying out on some of my models.

So, I dunk my models in Simple Green. Now that I'm marginally better at painting, with a decent camera, I thought it was time to start over. Only to find that while the white primer that I used on most of my Imperial Fists washes off totally fine, the black primer that I used on my Hawk Lords, does not.

Do I just leave black undercoated models in longer, or did I miss something?

Most primer won't come off with Simple Green. I've found that you can leave the primer in place as long as you don't have any globs covering up detals. Just be sure you give a very light spray of new primer over the old before you start painting.

If you need to remove the primer then I suggest going to your local drug store and similiar and buying a bag of the little sanding blocks that women use on their feet. They're sucha light grist that you can sand away the primer from plastic minis without damaging them.

    Thanks.

I'm not sure where that shininess is coming from, except the washed areas. I'd started taking the pictures before I varnish them, since the brand-switching incident with the varnish. I'm back to my old brand, now, and should probably go back to taking the pictures after I varnish.

Oh hey, a thread about miniature modeling. I've got a question for 'yall.

How is painting a plastic miniature different from a metal miniature?

I mean, despite the obvious... ...is there a difference in technique one uses? Do paints effect either type differently? ...or should I just not worry and paint it like all the others?

    From what I've found:

Metal minis don't take that colour all that easily. It takes more primer to really cover them, they need to be carefully washed first (and probably touched with gloves so that no grease gets on them again) and the paint tends to chip off if you don't seal it.

    @Technokami

The main differences are in the prep work required to get the mini in a state to paint. Plastic stend to have more flash, metals can have pitting and slag. Both have mold lines to deal with. Metals sometimes need to be washed with soap and water before priming.

Once you prime them they really paint the same. You don't actually need to cover any mini with a complete coat of primer unless you're using it as a base coat-a good dusting of primer preps the surface enough for painting. Finding the right amount can take some practice- just hit the mini with short bursts of the primer as you hit it from different angles.
