It's been a long time since I last painted anything. Participation in WAMP's speed painting challenge was the only thing that got me to pick up a brush again. Just had a new baby girl, so time has been limited.

For the challenge I painted the Raccoon Thief from Dark Sword Miniatures. Whole thing was painted in just under 4 hours.



I tried something interesting with the armor to get a different leather look. All washes are a 1:1 mix of wash and water.
-Calthan Brown base
-A couple of Baal Red washes
-Devlan Mud wash
-Thraka Green washes in shadows
-Babab Black wash in deepest shadows
-1:1 Calthan Brown and VMC Deck tan mixed into a glaze for highlights
-Pure Deck Tan glaze for the reflection point


The cloak started with my airbrush and then went to hand painting because the airbrush crapped out. Need to figure out what's wrong with it.
Cloak:
-Basecoat black
-very dark mix of Adeptus Battlegrey and black
-More mixes of Adeptus Battlegrey and black moving up to pure Adeptus for highlights
-Brightest areas are Codex Grey

So I just got my first finecast model. Is there some coating on it? Because it feels greasy.

It may have some type of realease agent on it, to help free it from the mold. I'd suggest washing it in warm water and dish soap.

I need some advice on how to pain winter camo. I'm painting my Infinity stuff with a snow camo pattern and snow bases since I realized I can't do city bases to save my life.

I then realized I have no idea how to do it. I'd like some advice.

I used the new Drakenhof Nightshade on white primer, painted the metals with boltgun metal and washed them, then did some drybrushes of 3 gradually lighter shades of blue. I also did some edge highlights on the metal with mithril silver. The red was a spur of the moment thing as I decided I'd add it to parts where there could conceivably be lights of some sort. It didn't look that good so I think I'll end up painting over it with metal or a darker color.

I have a wee question for the artistically minded here. I'm starting a Necron army and plan on doing the infantry in a nice deep brass colour. My question is what colour should I do the panelling on the tanks (the black/green area's on the GW scheme)?

What dark colours go well with brass?

I could use some conversion/painting advice (also posting in the modeling thread).
I am attempting to convert a Fire Incarnate (from monstrous arcanum)
using the fire tornado fulcrim and Tomb King necrosphinx upper body. Picture an armoured torso, arms and head rising from a column of fire. I am trying to paint the armoured sections as white hot metal, like it was on the verge of melting from the being with in.

What layering, painting scheme would you suggest to achieve that kind of metalic effect? Layer by layer advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like a great conversion

However the glowing that would be pretty hard (technique wise) to do. I just googled it and the consensus seems to be to begin with the darkest colour you want to use (yellow or orange in your case) and then blend up to white (through yellow if you use orange as base). I think in this case the new glazes could be a real asset.
I't say try out a few techniques on a some spare bits and use the one that looks best.

I got the hull of my third Leman Russ done over the weekend. I've held off on the turret because I'm considering this method of magnetizing it. I'm not sure how practical it would be, however, and I'd rather have an idea before I start cutting off the mounts. Thoughts?

Does anyone here know much about airbrushing? I've been thinking that it would be great for doing large areas/base colors and glowing runes. However, I have no idea if it's worth it to get one for those things since they're just as achievable with a paintbrush. I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on the subject. Also, any recommendations?

Airbrushes are good, and essential for painting anything bigger than a standard vehicle IMO.
They can also be a godsend if you want to base coat a large number of dudes / vehicles quickly. Without a lot of practice they're not so good for fine details. If you're going to be doing lare volumes / areas of painting, then they're worth it, but if you won't be painting anything bigger than a Dreadnought once a year, not really worth the dosh.

I was thinking about it since I have a few some tanks to paint. I think I'll just save the money and go through the trouble of painting with a brush though. I was looking at how expensive they were and came to the conclusion that it was a bit much to pay for something I'd use at most to save time on things I could do with a brush.

to add some grotesques to my DE army I decided to convert some Crypt ghouls using the remaining masks and bits from the Talos engine of pain. The conversion itself was not that hard (although I made some mistakes fitting the masks) and it looks remakably good.
Funny discovery: the official GW model is now the runt of the litter. I planned on making him the Abberation (sergeant) but now i'll just have to appoint another.

@ Pengiuniser - yeah, if you were looking as you were going to paint a few tanks and that's all, probably not worth it. You do get a smoother finish and it is much faster, but it is still quite an investment.
My airbrush is about 15 years old, doesn't run properly and is technically third hand, but it's good enough for how often I use it.

I didn't buy it all in one go. It's about done now, though; I might get a couple more Valkyries thanks to the new flyer rules, but I'm done accumulating infantry and tanks. No airbrush; that's all hand painted. Which is why the painting goes nowhere.

I didn't make as much progress this week as I hoped, owing to a family emergency. After pictures wouldn't show much difference, though I did do some much-needed repair work on some of my heavy weapon teams.

So, I've been taking to creating my own color scheme and would like to know if my idea is horribly flawed (Especially since I'm not all too used to the new citadel paints. I'm thinking of a mix of Screaming Skull, Ushabi Bone, and a touch of white scar to make skeletal bones. Also having layering of Evil Sunz Scarlet and Wazdakka Red to create the bloodied open flesh. With my recent resurgence in funds I've decided to go spelunking back down my undead Tyranids and needed a color scheme/plan, this was the best I could come up with. Any suggestions?

Ah, one last thing, does anyone know where I can find a guide/article on how to paint the Zombie Dragon that GW painted on their cover, I rather like the way the flesh and bones are painted and wanted to use the colors for my replacement Heiro.

Okay guys, I'm putting together my Vulture gunship kit from Forge World, and have a bit of a problem. They only supply the parts that are different from the Valkyrie in resin and give the plastic Valkyrie sprues for the rest. So far so good, except the plastic crew won't fit in the resin cockpit. In the plastic kit the cockpit housing is in two halves, which are assembled around the crew and their seats using pegs. But the resin cockpit housing is in one solid piece, and the plastic crew piece is too wide for it. Even removing the pegs won't help; the body itself is about two to three millimeters wider than the hole it's supposed to occupy. Has anyone ever done one of these before?
