    POISONER


    Poisoner are as the name describe are people who specialize in using poison, to do that they study the technique of poison creation, they call for the help of venomous creature and they study a little magic to complete that.

    BECOMING A POISONER
    Mosy any chararcter can become Poisoner, the most common are ninja, rogue, assassin, ranger and druid.

    ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
    Skills: Craft (Poison) 8 ranks, Heal 4 ranks, Knowledge (nature) 4 ranks
    Feats: Skill Focus (Craft (Poison)

    Weapon Proficiencies: You gain no new proficiency with any weapon or armor. You can cast poisoner spells while wearing light armor without incurring the normal arcane spell failure chance. However, like any other arcane spellcaster, a poisoner wearing medium or heavy armor or using a shield incurs a chance of arcane spell failure if the spell in question has a somatic component (most do). A multiclass poisoner still incurs the normal arcane spell failure chance for arcane spells received from other classes.

    Spellcasting: Beginning at 1st level, you gains the ability to cast a number of arcane spells. To cast a spell, you must have an Intelligence score of at least 10 + the spellís level, so a poisoner with an Intelligence of 10 or lower cannot cast these spells. Poisoner bonus spells are based on Intelligence, and saving throws against these spells have a DC of 10 + spell level + your Intelligence bonus. Like other spellcasters, you can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. Your base daily spell allotment is given on the table above. In addition, you receives bonus spells per day if you have a high Intelligence score. When you gets 0 spells per day of a given spell level you gains only the bonus spells you would be entitled to based on your Intelligence score for that spell level. The poisonerís spell list appears below. Unlike a bard or sorcerer, you may know any number of spells. You must choose and prepare your spells ahead of time by getting a good nightís sleep and spending 1 hour studying your spellbook. While studying, you decides which spells to prepare. You cannot prepare any spell not recorded in your spellbook, except for read magic, which all poisoner can prepare from memory. When you enter into this class you must obtain an empty spellbook for yourself (DM are encouraged to just give one shortly before you enter this class). You can immediately add any two poisoner spell plus read magic to your spellbook. At each new poisoner level, you gains two new spells of any spell level or levels that you can cast (based on your new poisoner level) for your spellbook. At any time, a poisoner can also add spells found in other spellbooks (or from scroll) to her own, in the same way that a wizard can do so.

    Venomous Companion: You gain the service of a venomous companion. The creature is similar to a druidís animal companion (PH 35), but it can be some other type of creature instead of an animal. Choose one of the following creature with an alignment up to one step away from your own on each of the alignment axis as your venomous companion: Dinosaur, SwindlespitterMM3 p40, Giant Bee, Howler WaspMM4 p74, Minor Flame SnakeFF p73, Monstrous Centipede (Small, Medium or Large), Monstrous Scorpion (Small or Medium), Monstrous Spider (Small, Medium or Large), Reed SnakeSK p84, Snake (Small, Medium or Large Viper), Snake, Two-headed AdderFRCS p308, Tirbana EyewingMM5 p172, Twig BlightMM2 p197, WatchspiderCoS:W p140
    This creature is a loyal companion that accompanies you on your adventures and help you as much as it can, you could milk it for its venom for example. It is completely typical for its kind except as noted below. As you advance in level, the creatureís power increases as shown on the table. If you releases your companion from your service, you may gain a new one by performing a ceremony requiring 24 uninterrupted hours of meditation. This method can also replace a venomous companion that has perished. At 4th level or higher, you may select from an alternative lists of creature (see below). Should you select a venomous companion from one of these alternative lists, the creature gains abilities as if your poisoner level was lower than it actually is. Subtract the value indicated in the appropriate list header from your poisoner level and compare the result with the poisoner level entry on the table to determine the venomous companionís powers. (If this adjustment would reduce your poisoner effective level to 0 or lower, you canít have that creature as a companion.)
    This ability can be used to qualify for feat, prestige class or other in place of the animal companion ability.
    If you have level in class that grant an animal companion (such as druid) four things can happen as follow,
    • You can either keep both the animal companion and the venomous companion in that case simply calculate the power grant to each creature separately as normal. If you gain level in a class which level stack to determine an animal companion power (such as Animal lordCAd) only one creature can gain the benefit of it either your animal companion or your venomous companion not both.
    • You could also choose to not gain a venomous companion, in that case you can add your poisoner level to your effective druid level to determine the power granted to your animal companion.
    • You could chose to dismiss your animal companion to keep only your venomous companion, in that case add half your effective druid level to your poisoner level (maximum 10) to determine the power of your venomous companion.
    • Finally if you select a venomous companion that you already posses as an animal companion you can choose to keep your animal companion and designate it to also be your venomous companion. The creature then gain all the normal benefit for being an animal companion plus the constitution adjustment and the special ability granted to the venomous companion depending on your poisoner level. The creature gain no other benefit from being your venomous companion such as bonus Hit dice or increases in natural armor.


    Poison crafting (Ex): While tinkering with your poison youíve discovered an unique new method to create them. At 1st level you gain the ability to harvest poison from any creature that possess a poison attack and to craft it into an usable form for you. To harvest poison from a creature you must either milk it from a willing creature, your venomous companion for example, doing so take one minute and only necessity for the creature to stand still next to you, this allow you to gain enough material for 1 dose of poison. Or you could harvest the poison from the corpse of a poisonous creature who died less than an hour ago, this take 10 minute and require a successful Heal check (DC 10 + hit dice of the creature), if this check is successful you gain enough material for 1 dose of poison, you can only harvest material from a dead creature once. The craft DC to make the harvest material into an usable poison is equal to the Fortitude saves DC of the poison in question plus a number of modifier as detailed in the table below. This take you 10 minutes and cost you 10 gp per hit dice of the creature in preservative and stabilizing agent, poison create this way only stay potent for up to 24 hours.

    In addition you are considered the have the poison use ability for the purpose of meeting feat (or other effect) prerequisite if you do not already have it.

    Immunity to poison (Ex): At second level you gain immunity to all poison and in particular those you craft yourself. This mean that you cannot be harmed by your own poison even with the benefit of you Ignore Immunity ability.

    Undetectable Poison (Su): You know of course that people are often wary of poison user, you prefer to not alert them of the fact that you are one. At 3th level you can now make the poison you craft undetectable by magical mean, spell such as detect poison simply donít report anything. In addition as long as your venomous companion is within five feet of you, magical mean cannot detect is poison either. This does not stop creature from making knowledge check about your companion however.

    Modify Poison (Ex): Your mastery of poison now allow you to change the way they are applied. At 4th level, when crafting poison you can choose to change the way itís applied either changing an ingested poison into an inhaled one or vice versa or changing an injury poison into a contact poison or vice versa. At 7th level, you can change any one categories of poison into any other.

    Potent Poison The sad truth is that poison cost money, even for you as such youíve found a way to better conserve them. At 5th level, you gain the ability to make you poison more concentrate so that you need less of it for the same effect. Each dose of poison that you craft yourself can be use twice instead of once. In effect each of dose of poison is equivalent to two dose.

    Ignore Immunity (Su): Youíve learn to infuse a little magic into your poison, this make them much harder to resist. Starting at 6th level, poison you craft yourself can ignore an immunity to poison grant by a magical effect, this include spell or spell-like ability (like neutralize poison), supernatural ability or magic item. At 8h level your poison ignore any sort of poison immunity, be it magical as before, but also racial one or derived from type such as creature of the plant type. Finally at 10th level your poison are effective even against creature immune to their effect, for example your poison could deal ability damage to an undead or render unconscious a construct as appropriate for each particular poison.

    Persistent Poison (Su): Itís always a problem when people find a way to heal from the damage youíve inflicted on them with your poison, well now you have a solution. At 9th level the poison you craft that normally deal ability damage, now deal ability burn instead (see spoiler).

    The Venomous Companion



    A poisoner venomous companion is different from a normal creature of its kind in many way. It is superior to a normal creature of its kind and has special power, as described below.

    Venomous Companion Basics: Use the base statistics for a creature of the companionís kind, but make the following changes.

    Class Level: The characterís poisoner level. The poisonerís class levels stack with levels of any other classes that are entitled to an animal companion for the purpose of determining the companionís abilities and the alternative lists available to you, see the ability description for more detail on how this work.

    Bonus HD: Extra Hit Dice the size of which depend on the type of your venomous companion (d8 for aberration, animal, outsider, plant and vermin, d10 for magical beast, d12 for dragon) each of which gains a Consitution modifier, as normal. Remember that extra Hit Dice improve the venomous companionís base attack and base save bonuses. A venomous companionís base attack bonus vary depending on its type, as fighter (equal to hit dice) for dragon, magical beast and outsider, as cleric (equal to ĺ hit dice) for aberration, animal, plant and vermin). A venomous companion has save that depend on its type, all good save for dragon and outsider, good Fortitude and Reflex saves for animal and magical beast, good Fortitude saves for plant and vermin and good Will saves for aberrations). A venomous companion gains additional skill points (2+int for aberration, animal, magical beast, plant and vermin, 6+int for dragon and 8+int for outsider) and feats for bonus HD as normal for advancing a monsterís Hit Dice. Even normally mindless creature, such as most plant or vermin, gain skill points and feat when they become your venomous companion, see the Mind ability below.
    Changing a creature number of Hit dice will also influence the save DC of the creature poison.

    Natural Armor Adj.: The number noted here is an improvement to the venomous companionís existing natural armor bonus.

    Con Adj.: Add this value to the venomous companionís Constitution score. Remember this will also influence the save DC of the creature poison.

    Mind: If you choose a venomous companion that is normally mindless, it lose the mindless special quality (and the immunity to mind affecting effect that it represent) in exchange it gain an Intelligence score of 1 and is considered an animal for the purpose of the Handle animal skill for you.

    Bonus Tricks: If your venomous companion is an animal (or was previously mindless, see above). The value given in this column is the total number of ďbonusĒ tricks that the creature knows in addition to any that you might choose to teach it (see the Handle Animal skill). These bonus tricks donít require any training time or Handle Animal checks, and they donít count against the normal limit of tricks known by the creature. You selects these bonus tricks, and once selected, they canít be changed. If your venomous companion has an Intelligence score of 3 or more, it gain no benefit from this ability.

    Link (Ex): You can handle your venomous companion as a free action, or push it as a move action, even if you donít have any ranks in the Handle Animal skill. You gains a +4 circumstance bonus on all Handle Animal checks made regarding your venomous companion.

    Share Spells (Ex): At your option, you may have any spell (but not any spell-like ability) you casts upon yourself also affect your venomous companion. The venomous companion must be within 5 feet of you at the time of casting to receive the benefit. If the spell or effect has a duration other than instantaneous, it stops affecting the venomous companion if the companion moves farther than 5 feet away and will not affect the creature again, even if it returns to you before the duration expires.
    Additionally, you may cast a spell with a target of ďYouĒ on your venomous companion (as a touch range spell) instead of on yourself. You and your venomous companion can share spells even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the companionís type.

    Envenom Weapon (Ex): As a move action, when your venomous companion is within 5 feet of you, it can apply any contact or injury poison it posses to any one weapon you are holding. The poison remain potent for 1 minute or until you successfully hit a creature with the weapon, whichever come first.

    Evasion (Ex): If a venomous companion is subjected to an attack that normally allows a Reflex saving throw for half damage, it takes no damage if it makes a successful saving throw.

    Devotion (Ex): A venomous companion gains a +4 morale bonus on Will saves against enchantment spells and effects.

    Improved Evasion (Ex): When subjected to an attack that normally allows a Reflex saving throw for half damage, a venomous companion takes no damage if it makes a successful saving throw and only half damage if the saving throw fails.

    Alternative Venomous Companion A poisoner of sufficiently high level can select her venomous companion from one of the following lists, applying the indicated adjustment to the poisonerís level (in parentheses) for purposes of determining the companionís characteristics and special abilities.

    As Detect Poison, except that you detect poison on all a creature, object or square within the area. Also you can substitute a Craft (poison) check to the wisdom check or Craft (alchemy) check to determine the type of poison. You need to make one check per poison detected.
    Note: This spell count as detect poison for all purpose.

    This spell summons a creature that posses some sort of poison attack. It appears where you designate and acts immediately, on your turn. It attacks your opponents to the best of its ability. If you can communicate with the creature, you can direct it not to attack, to attack particular enemies, or to perform other actions.
    The spell conjures one of the creatures from the 1st-level list on the accompanying Summon Toxic Creature List. You choose which kind of creature to summon, and you can change that choice each time you cast the spell.
    A summoned monster cannot summon or otherwise conjure another creature, nor can it use any teleportation or planar travel abilities. Creatures cannot be summoned into an environment that cannot support them. Summoned creature cannot be milk for their poison.

    Here's my latest work, the idea has been on my mind for some time now and I've finally manage to finish it. I fear that it's a little too strong but on the other hand poison are really weak to begin with so it may still work. Please evaluate and critic honestly.
    Also this work wasn't proofread, if someone would be willing do to it, it would be greatly appreciate.

    EDIT: None one response after two days ? it's because it's not proofread, isn't it ? I knew I shouldn't have been too impatient to post it. Still not even a little critic ? Please.

    Well...you're giving them the Venomfire spell when they have a companion who MUST have a venomous attack, but...the caster level only goes up to 10 so I guess it's less crazy than a druid using it.

    I like the prerequisites and the all around flavor of the class, and you have some useful class features that make Poison better. Perhaps you should create more spells to flesh out the spell list a little more, perhaps a ray series that does Con damage? (Like Ray of Enfeeblement, but with the Poison descriptor. Trading the Fort save for a ranged touch attack makes poison so much better).

    Also I know it's technically not poison, but I think Blinding Spittle (Spell Compendium) is another great spell that fits in with the theme of the class.

    Your venomous companion list is so detailed! So many choices, a list for each level! I didn't even know there were that many creatures with poisonous attacks in D&D so I'm grateful for that as a DM.

    The ability to modify poisons is good and makes sense, though I wish there were some way to increase their save DC or their damage, perhaps you could make a 5th level spell that increases the virility of the next poison you use?

    Yeah, I wasn't sure with this one but the character is far less powerful than a druid and it get less spell slot.

    The first version of the spell list include a lot of spell that reduce save (like bestow curse) and I might put some of them back in.

    I had to look in a lot of book to create that list. and there's a lot more creature but they were either too powerful (couatl), too similar to other creature already in the list (yet another spider) or with impractical/worthless poison.

    There class already improve the DC of poison, but indirectly. If you use the poison milked from your companion, an that the easiest way to gain one, you get a better DC because the poison DC depend on the creature HD and Con score and both are improved by the class. As for spell well there's a few spell in the list that already do that in various way, breath of the jungle, increase virulence, bleed and cloudkill. In addition you the poison expert feat increase the DC of poison of a certain type you create by 1, and look the class can change the type of poison. And finally each con poison succesfully applied lower the save for futur poison.

    Cool concept and I like the execution (though I'm not a big fan of minion-master types, so the Venomous Companion doesn't interest me much), but I do have a question.... why are all the poisoners naked? Hehehe, just seems like one particular profession where you would really not want to be naked.

    You might want to fix the table on your Will Save, and fix the broken [/sup] tags on several monsters. Also, under Persistent Poison, you might want a short blurb explaining ability burn, as it doesn't really come up outside of Psionics.

    Hmmm... I was going to suggest you add my Enhance Poison spell to these guy's spell list. The most critical aspects of it are included as class features here (anti-detection, anti-immunity*, and anti-cure). In fact what is offered here is superior, which is perfectly appropriate for a PrC as opposed to a spell.

    *Although Enhance Poison only works against spell-granted immunity, such as that from Delay Poison or Heroes Feast.

    When working on the Prc I've look a various homebrew on the forum for inspiration and to avoid doing thing in the exact same way. Your spell were among those that I look into.

    I've missed this one however and the similarity are startling, even if I put more empahis on the companion and my spell list is more specialized. Great mind think alike !

It doesn't have options for restricting it to a particular sub-forum, unfortunately, but it can frequently return better results than the Forum search in my experience.

    I think it is site:www.giantitp.com , and I really should go back to repeating that myself every time the subject comes up (like I used to do).

    One can also just click the "advanced search" button if using the actual Google site, rather than a toolbar box.

    I should also note that I don't generally do such searches myself, but then again, I have been around long enough, have a pretty good memory, and do weird enough stuff MOST of the time that I don't find it as necessary. Of course, there WAS that one case with the "I can Cure AND Inflict" cleric PrC...

    Either will work. In theory, if the site used the URL scheme where the first sub-directory replaces the www (I think that's how that works, anyway), I think my version would be more general while yours would specifically only use the parts that start with www, but GitP doesn't use that anyway.

    Google does seem to return different results for the two queries, which is bizarre, though.

    Does Ignore Immunity also apply to the effects of your poison-based spells or only to poisons created via Poison Crafting? What about your Venomous Companion and creatures from Summon Toxic Creature?

    Only those you've craft yourself, it's an intend limitation for such a powerful ability.
