    Summary of Playable Races with RHD

    Inspired by a crazy DM who required us to pick races with specific LA/RHD requirements, and by Thurbane's Excellent LA+1/+2 Playable Race Guide. This is almost certainly not as useful as the latter, but might save some work for anybody who needs a playable race with RHD for something.

    Bariaurs with less RHD (or was it LA) were in Planar Handbook, I seem to recall.

    Steel/Mist/Mercury Dragons (Dragons of Faerun) are have relatively low starting ECL (for true dragons).

    Gloura have 7 hit dice and 2 LA. Throw in three levels of bard and you can slip in to Sublime Chord. You are stuck with the 2 LA, but it is worth something.

    "Casts as bard" means they stack with bard casting. SC has it's own, separate casting.

    I can't find Sandstorm on that list.

    Marrulurks make awesome innate Assassins (they have natural sneak attack).

    3 HD/1LA. They have Death Attack (Cha based)/Sneak Attack +2d6/Poison use/Fire resist 5/2 bonus feats: Point Blabk shot + Rapid Shot. Also 2 NA.
    But they are small creatures with 20 ft speed (With a Str bonus).

    Crucians are okay 3HD/2 LA with 8 NA good Str/Con.

    Geluns are 5 Hd/2 LA so expensive. Immune to fire/vulnerable to cold.
    Can daze foe for 1 rd each round with a ray (and can attack in same action).
    But need endure elements or be constantly on fire since if you go below certain outside temperature you freeze solid (not an cold attack) if want to adventure.

    Sand Dragon wyrmlings are okay.
    Sand Breath attack

    Not sure if you're interested in using it, since it's not totally 3.5, but Savage Species has a pretty comprehensive list of creatures by starting ECL, including creatures that aren't given LAs in the 3.5 MM (such as elementals.)

    On top of that, the 3.5 update booklet assigns LAs to a number of MM2 monsters and a few creatures from Deities and Demigods. The web enhancement for Player's Guide to Faerun also assigns LAs to some monsters from previous Forgotten Realms supplements. Most notably, hairy spiders, which are fine vermin with a +0LA, 1HD, and no INT score! (though a template could fix their lack of INT)

    Also, check Fiend Folio and Unapproachable East (hagspawn and taer come to mind). If you're interested in using Dragon Magazine, the 3.5 update of oriental adventures gives a number of creatures with RHD LAs.

    Good question.

    It started out as races that have a "X as player characters" blurb about them but I think it could be liberally expanded from there to entertain other useful options.

    Were there changes to either of the Thri-Kreen in Shining South?

    MMII thri-kreen had EWPs for Gythka and Chatkcha, Shining South version has Weapon Familiarity for them.

    MII's psionic version also had LA +3 and used 3.0 psionics, while Shining South's psionic thri-kreen have LA +2 and obviously use 3.5 psionics.

    Trumpet Archons clock in at ECL 20. They get 14 levels of cleric casting and some good SLA's

    Added the Dretch!

    The psionic Yuan-Ti is extremely close to the regular one for the purposes of the summary here. It amounts to changing the SR->PR, and SLAs->PLAs. I think it would be less cluttered to not do a separate entry for them.

    Edit: Although while I was in the XPH I noticed that I missed the Unbodied. Added them.

    Savage Species has a large number of Anthromorphic Animals. Not updated for 3.5.

    Underdark also has the Portal Drake. 3hd Dragon with +3 LA

    Phaerlock. +2LA; 2HD reptillian humanoid. Medium. Speed 30. Share Pain(su), All around Vision (ex), Hold Breath (ex). +4 Racial bonus to Balance, Jump and Swim. +4str, +4con, -2int, +4cha. Bite & 2 Claws. +7 NA.

    Baphitaur. +2 LA; 3HD outsider. Medium. Speed 30. Darkness (sp), Powerful Charge (ex), Rage (ex), Natural Cunning (ex), +2 racial on Listen, Search and Spot. +4 str, +2dex, +2con, -2 cha. Gore attack. +3NA

    Not going to bother writing up Lith or Maur, due to excessive RHD and LA.

    Templates in this book include Arachnid, Chameleon, Half Illithid, Mineral Warrior and Phaezress Infused creature.
