Nope. Somewhere, in the LucasFilm archives or one of the countless supplementary materials, that probiscus guy has a name, and probably a backstory.

iirc, the Super Star Wars (SNES game) instruction manual called him "Garindin".

The devil-looking guy was "Labria" or something.

Don't feel like digging through spiderwebs to check, but it's probably on Wookiepedia too.

It's Star Wars. Everyone has a name and a backstory. Up to and including the guy who just says "Look, sir, droids."

The amount varies though. That guy got an entire short story to himself, in Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina. Other characters sometimes only get paragraphs in background books, rather than actual stories.

Well sure, compared to Pete's Dreadnaught he would be the one to sat that. What's some hick "off the grid" moisture farmer now about spacecraft anyway?

Waht I'd loke to know is who's "playimg" Chewbacca. His speech use the DM's color, but he's Jim's sidekick, and more to the point obviously the brains of the pair.

I think you answered your own question. His speech bubbles are in the DM's color, and Jim described him as a 'cohort', so he's an NPC.

Agreed, but he's Jim's NPC/cohort. That makes him as much a part of Jim's character as any other piece of equipment (and perhaps I should have ""controlling" rather then "playing.") He should not be taking action without be directed by Jim, and yet we've seen him apparently take the lead already on a couple of occasions. That's either Jim's roleplaying, or the GM is railroading.

Well, in all my games, cohorts are universally controlled by the DM. The player may give orders or suggestions, but the execution of said orders are up to the DM. It makes sense, too. The cohort is a separate being, and unless the player is dominating him psychically or through magic or something, he's for all intents and purposes a true NPC. And I know my group isn't the only one who runs it this way.

In reference to the comic, it seems fairly obvious that the DM is "playing" Frasierbacca.

Yeah, in games where the GM actually likes playing as many NPCs as possible, and wants even "purchased" NPCs to be treated as characters and not...well...the way players usually treat NPCs, they will generally control cohorts, animal companions, etc.

I think that's even technically the rules in D&D, but a lot of DMs ignore that for the sake of making things easier on themselves and their players, unless they are really big NPC actors like the Darths & Droids GM.

    I don't think so?
I mean, a lot of DMs control cohorts and such. Mostly to avoid problems with you abusing their powers and such.

I like the way GURPS does this - Allies and other NPCs you buy with character points are controlled by the GM, but are specifically protected under the normal "do not **** with the things your players spent points on" guidelines as, say, signature equipment or whatever.

Of course, the GM can just ignore those rules and be a jerk, but the GM can do that anyway.

    Concerning today's comic's comment...
my party just got a small medieval town handed to us to rule and I just so happen to be the commander of the newly formed Watch... Should I inform my men to first knock the suspects down before announcing their presence or just to watch out for trigger happy vigilantes?

Inform them that any groups of travelers that number four or more, each carrying distinctly different equipment assortments, are to be cooperated with whenever possible and avoided at all other times.

Also, word should be brought to you (and anyone in earshot) of any such group's presence in your lands, so that adjustments can be made to the local economy.
