Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Here is the old thread's link
I thought that the new megarelease was worth a new thread. And we reached page 50 anyway... so...
What was the most gruesome death you've ever witnessed in that game? Once, I had a goblin cut in about 6 pieces, two of them flying at least 10 tiles away and the head landing 1 vertical level higher than the trap..
Not to forget the blood...
Edit: People asked for a direct link for the download itself.. so... Here it is!Last edited by SolkaTruesilver; 2010-04-10 at 11:31 PM. Reason: change title

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Yay, shiny new thread!
I did see a dark gnome get killed by one of my dogs, spreading blood over an improbably large area. As in, splashes of blood across an entire screen.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
One time, I had an Axedwarf blast a goblin halfway across the screen, where it impacted a wall and came to a halt right on top of a weapon trap. The goblin absolutely EXPLODED, and I wound up cleaning body parts out of trees as much as four screens away
I somehow suspect that the new version is going to get even more gruesome though. It's amazing what a dwarf can survive (like, say, having a hit shatter half his rib cage en route to gashing his liver), so something fatal is bound to be truly horrific.SpoilerBossing Around Mad Cats for Fun and Profit: Let's Play MechCommander 2!

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
the worst I've ever had was the serrated disc weapon traps. Goblins would walk into them and become, essentially, mincemeat. Parts and blood would fly everywhere. Once it even happened to an unfortunate Dorf who wasn't fast enough, got shot by a goblin crossbow, and tried to crawl through a trap.
I used to do LP's. Currently archived here:

Throwing small humanoids as a bronze colossus is similar. Things explode when they hit walls.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Bronze Collosi are currently immortal. Even with an adamantine weapon you cannot properly kill them. Which is probably much more realistic than previous incarnations where anybody with a good hammer could bust their head and kill them.
Also, can we get a link to the download page in the first post so people have a clue what we are talking about?

The most gruesome was one of my former wrestlers going berserk and destroying some dwarf child's eyes.

Well I sealed a squad of armed dwarves in with elvish peasants using arena mode and watched the ensuing slaughter. Also I noticed an interesting trick, You can obsidian cast walls if you put magma and water in the air over a space.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Most brutal death? I may have posted about this already, but a few months ago in the fortress I built the highway and city wall in (I posted about it int he other thread) I had exactly one marksdwarf. I had like nine soldiers, but only the one marksdwarf.
Anyway, during a one seige or ambush or something (I don't recall exactly) she got piled on by a bunch of goblins before help could arrive, and her right lung was mangled. Despite this, she continued to fight with half her torso missing. While the rest of the army was away handling some other goblins, she was chasing after a straggler. Down to her last bolt, she fired at him.
Since I like to wach injuries accumulate, I paused and checked the goblin's health. His brain was brown and his right eye was missing. She'd shot him in the back of the head and the bolt skewered his brain completly and had taken out one of his eyes. A few seconds later she caught up with him and beat him to death.Last edited by Shpadoinkle; 2010-04-10 at 09:44 PM.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
This game seems rather fun, but I have one problem: how do you get dwarfs to go get things from a caravan?

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
From a caravan? You have to trade for it. If you mean you want them to move the stuff you've traded for, they generally won't do that until the caravan actually leaves.
Unrelated but it's driving me crazy: How do you return to the title screen fromt he embark screen? Z, Esc, and Shift+Esc aren't working.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
If you find a cavern with mud, yeah. Otherwise no. You can't farm anything underground unless it's been muddied first, soil or not.
If you're really deperate for food, you can tell a couple dwarves to start gathering plants. Unless you're on a map without any shrubs. Failing that, you can try fishing and hunting.Last edited by Shpadoinkle; 2010-04-11 at 10:49 AM.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
If you go into the depot and deselect trading on the purchased items, your dwarves should go pick them up and deliver to the stockpiles.
There is no key for cancelling an embark at the moment, you'll have to terminate the process to get out until the next patch maybe.

Is there a tutorial for this game? I have it, and played it for five minutes before I decided that I did not know what to do, and quit.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
The DF Wiki is very useful for looking up stuff. It is in need of updating because of the recent release of the new version of DF, but much of it is still accurate.
I'm told these video tutorials are very useful for learning the game. These were made for the old version, but again, most of it should still apply.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Path finding is being very buggy for me. My dwarves will randomly desicde they can't path through open tiles. Saving and reloading fixes it, but it is getting to be a nusince.
In positive news, I got my first working mist generator. I'm very please with myself. If God had wanted you to live he would not have created me!

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
O_O I just realized I can make one of those now. I broke into an underground cavern with some open spaces that run off the edge of the map, so I don't have to worry about where the water will go once it's down there (I haven't made one before because I couldn't find a satisfactory way to deal with that problem). Just route it into the caves and it'll disapear off the edge of the map.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
So I just started my first dwarf fortress game, with the aid of tutorial. I'm about five minutes in, and am pretty lost. I've got a miner mining out a hole, and two other people gathering plants and wood, but I've got four idlers and no idea what to do with them.
EDIT: The miner has hit anhydrite, gypsum, and rough chryosprases. Oh, and I saw hematite on the other side of the hill. I don't know if that helps.Last edited by Copacetic; 2010-04-11 at 04:35 PM.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Well, what you do with people depends on the jobs they have and the equipment they have.
Having a gatherer out is good, but you may want to see if you've got any farmers on hand.
Other than that, use the wood and areas you've mined out to set up Masons/Craftdwarves/Carpenters Workshops and put in a few bedrooms, maybe set up a food storage and kitchen area.
Beds at at least a few tables and chairs would be a good start.
Hematite means you can get some smithing going, but I'd wait until you've got everyone happy and well fed.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
I have, apparently, one miner, a stone and wood worker a piece, a noble, a jeweler, and two fishery workers. Which is fantastic, seeing as there are only puddles. How do I set them about doing anything useful? Like, say Helping the miner out?

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Well, you'd need picks. Assuming you have those, you'd have to adjust their professions to Miner. Then they'll step in. They won't be as good, at first, but they'll catch up eventually.

Ok, I`ve decided I want to pump some water out my the nearby stream, and into a hole a few z-levels up. I have no clue how to make a pump work......Halp?
(In fact, I have no clue how to even make a pump...)
As for guesome deaths, I recently found a giagantic puddle of blood in one of my old experimental mines, with 3 goblin heads nearby......No clue who did this.Steam name: Dragero Add me! (Just click this link)
