Every American has, hopefully and at the very least, heard of Paul Revere. No, not Paul Revere and the Raiders:
    Spoiler
    Show

But Paul Revere, the Patriot of Midnight Ride fame.

But what many don't know is that Paul Revere did not ride alone. He and William Dawes took seperate routes toward Lexington, to avoid capture. And instead of yelling out the now famous: "The British are coming!", they instead went door to door, calling to those inside "The Regulars are coming out." This lead to many more men, and maybe possibly women, riding out to give warning to their fellow patriots (or renegades/traitors/terrorists, if you were British ).

Samuel Adams and John Hancock, believing the army coming out of Charleston was too big just for the capture of them alone, sent Dawes and Revere to warn Concord, who they believed to be the true target. They were joind by Samuel Prescott, who, luck would have it, was the only one of the three to make it there.

So there you have it, the abbreviated version of the ride. But I missed something, and this is the question:

Mangosta, what was the name of the sexton (church officer charged with the maintenance of its buildings and/or the surrounding graveyard) who hung the lamps in the Christ Church (now known as the Old North Church)?

Ah, yes. One if by land, two if by sea.

As with so many other things, it call comes back to Seinfeld. Surely you all remember his sociopathic neighbor played by Wayne Knight (who also portrayed Dennis Nedry in Jurassic Park). "Hello, Newman." Of course, in this instance, I would have been a poor student in Mr. Bearden's AP American History class if I didn't know that the gentleman in question's first name was Robert. Thus, Robert Newman.

Upon searching for my favorite Pharoah, Akhenaten, I realize he was married to the beautiful Nephertiti, and possibly fathered the infamous Tutankhamun.

So let's talk about Queen Hatshepsut. After the death of her Husband, Thutmose II, she declared herself Queen of Egypt and successfully ruled for almost 22 years. She is believed to have brought peace and great prosperity to Egypt during this time, ending only in her mysterious death, and the succession of Thutmose III, her nephew.

Near the end of Thutmose III's reign, it was ordered that all images of Hatshepsut be either removed completely, or mutilated to show her as lesser than she was. While it was orignally believed that Thutmose III ordered this, it is now believed that his son, Amenhotep II, did this to bolster his own claim to the throne.

Recently, a mummy has been discovered that may be that of Hatshepsut. If it is true, then the medical evidence may have found a reason for her death. Helgraf, can you tell us please what they believe caused the demise of this Queen of the Nile?

Self-help books. She just couldn't remain the Queen of Denial after that.

Sadly, Hatshepsut was born long before the great spokesperson Wilford Brimley. Otherwise she would have known the steps to take to prevent her tragic death from complications of Diabeetus.

The 14th of July, 1789, the day the Bastille was stormed, and the beginning of the French Revolution. From this, we get the first Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen in August of 1789 later modified and adopted in 1793.

Back to the Revolution. The French Revolution lasted just over 10 years, ending in officially on the 9th of November, 1799 with Napolean's the coup d'état.

One of the more influential clubs (equivalent to a political party) was the Jacobians. Initially moderate in temper, the Jacobians become more radical as the Revolution wore on, especially under the leadership of Jean-Paul Marat, Georges Danton, and Maximilien de Robespierre.

After the execution of Louis XVI, the Jacobins turned the attention of the Revolution away from the Monarchy and toward Girondists, accusing them of being counter-revolutionaries and supporters of the late King. This would lead directly to the most bloody time of the Revolution, the Reign of Terror.

But there needed to be a spark to ignite the flames of passion, something to rally around. Much like the Alamo during the Texas Revolution, or the Boston Massacre of the American Revolution, something dramatic that would grab the attention of the general populace. That firepin came with the murder of Jean-Paul Marat.

A young woman, and Girondin supporter, saw the radical direction Marat and the Jacobins were taking the Revolution, and she decided to take it upon herself to put an end to it. Believing that by killing the one, she'd save hundreds of thousands, she conspired alone to kill the one man she held responsible. Through deception and invitation, she made her way into Marat's
bathing room, where he conducted his affairs due to a debilitiating skin disease. There she plunged her secreted knife into his chest, killing him almost instantly, long enough for him to cry out: "Aidez-moi, ma chère amie!" ("Help me, my dear friend!").

The obvious question, The Fiery Tower, is Who was this l'ange de l'assassinat (Angel of Assassination)?

If only I payed attention a year ago to my history classes...

Specifically, last year when my classes covered the French Revolution. Now, we focused a lot on the later part of Robespierre rule, but odds are we did mention this and I didn't mention it. So, time to do the next best thing and wiki it!

...or just guess at the name. Which one I'm doing... Well, we'll see.

Let's go with Marie Roussou. Yea. Sounds about right.

The United States and Canada have long been farily friendly allies. I hope I'm not wrong in saying this. Up until 2001, our borders had been open to one another (if they had closed earlier, I hadn't heard of it).

But we were not always on such friendly terms. During the American Revolution War, and the War of 1812, although some in Canada sympathized with our plight, Canada did not join our cause against our mutual mother country, England.

During those years, there were many conflicts between us and our northern sister. Mostly, it seems, us invading into Canada, to take on the British stationed there.

And then there were the border disputes: Maine vs. New Brunswick, the Indian Stream dispute, the 49th Parallel, the Fort Blunder... er, blunder? Land disputed due to the Lousianna Purchase. And my personal favorite, the Pig War.

The dispute takes place over three small islands that sit between Vancouver Island and mainland Washington State, San Juan, Orcas, and Lopez. Of course, both the United States and, what was then, the British Empire wanted these islands. But things remined peaceful until.... The Pig!

Lyman Cutler found this evil, war-starting, pig rooting around his garden, eating his tubers. Well, this just made Farmer Cutler just mad, and he took aim and killed that pig.

Well, this made his neighbor, Charles Griffin, mad right back at the sow murderer. Cutler offered Griffin $10 for the pig (I believe this was a good price back in those days, but can't say for sure), but Griffin wanted more, $90 more, to be precise. This was too much for Cutler, and he decided to lower his offer to nothing, since the pig was trespassing on his land.

When the Brtish authorities threatened to arrest Cutler, the U.S. responded with military action. They sent 66 soldiers of the 9th Infantry to his defence.

The question is: What future Civil War general was in command of the U.S. Infantry stationed on the island during the dispute?

War Plan Red, which included plans for the US to invade Canada (drafted following WWI) was declassified in 1974.

The US plans included invasion of Canada as an important part of fighting a war against the British Empire should such an event ever transpire. The importance of having an attack already planned was due to the presumption that reinforcements would arrive from Great Britain if Canada was not rapidly seized.

Canada drafted but rejected plans for a daring offensive into the US to buy time for British reinforcements to arrive, showing they were also concerned about such a conflict potentially arising.

For their part, Great Britain would have surprised everyone by not sending the reinforcements. The British government, fearing it would be drawn into an arms race, actively blocked the navy from drawing up any plans to reinforce Canada. Additionally, they considered defending Canada untenable in such a scenario.

The current relationship between the US and Canada was forged during World War 2 and the Cold War, thus explaining the shock value that the declassification of these plans had in the seventies.

Ooh, I can't wait for my American history class to cover this one, sounds dandy. 'Course Wiki just taught me everything I ought to know, so there's that.

The very model of a modern major general (well, captain at the time) who was in command of the troops was Major General John M. Browning.

    Fifty-Four Forty or FIGHT!

    *ahem*

...hmmm. I'm gonna say I disagree here. Pretty sure Mr. Browning of fine firearms fame was a bit on the young side to be in command round about those times...

The answer was Major General, back then Captain, George Pickett, of Pickett's Charge fame. Pig War. Read more.

And that's the game. Thank you to both of our players. I'd PM'd Bill, thinking it was his turn.
