Here's something to talk about: The Dark Horse comics. There's been a leak of a good enough chunk so that you can get a bearing on the plot. Obviously, Spoilers ahoy

WHAT!?!?!?!? That film was awful. They crammed an entire season worth of plot and characterization into 100 minutes. And they failed at that. Also, the acting was horrible. M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender is one of the worst films I ever saw.

Firebending is the most visually impressive kind. (Except for Aang's little silver-donut trick.) And it's scarier. And also cooler. And the fact that fire being thrown around is better in every imaginable way to throwing water at somebody.

The cycle goes water -> earth -> fire -> air. As a Water Tribe Avatar, she would have grown up learning waterbending, then learned earthbending after learning she was the Avatar, and at the time the show starts have most recently mastered firebending, the one most against her natural inclinations. So I imagine there may well be an element of "WOOOOO I CAN SET YOU ON FIRE AHAHAHAHAAA", er, I mean, indulging in (or legitimately practicing) a difficult skill only just acquired.

Also, showing her firebending makes her more immediately visually distinguishable from Katara and flags her as the Avatar.

I would really like to see a game made by Obryn, Kurald Galain, and Knaight from these forums.

I'm not joking one bit. I would buy the hell out of that.

Also, Korra's apparently been Earth and Firebending since she was 6-8 years old, which is why she's mastered so much at 16/17.

Finally, Katara is still alive, and apparently Korra's issue is that she can only see the physical aspects of bending, not the spiritual (Note that in the intro, her waterbending's actually kind of sloppy)

Sounds like you've seen the clip I refrained from linking to.

I imagine another reason for favouring fire bending might just be because Korra can't be arsed to carry a jug of water around with her everywhere she goes.

There's no reason for an Avatar to prefer his original element over any of the others. Aang's over-reliance on Airbending was likely due to the fact that he had to rush his other bending styles, and wasn't very good with them outside of his Avatar State. Once Korra masters Airbending, though, she would be wise to spam it, because it's not a common technique and people she fights wouldn't have a counter to it.

The cycle for Aang went Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Korra has the same cycle, except it starts from Water. That means she has mastered Fire just before the events of the new series start.

If I had just learned to SHOOT FIRE OUT OF MY FISTS, you know what? I'd be perfectly happy shooting fire out of my fists. If someone doesn't like it, I'd throw some fire his way. :D

    Eh?

I was under the impression that was exactly how it went for Avatars; they grow up as benders in their home nation, then at 16 learn they're the Avatar and start training in other elements. Are you saying Korra didn't learn waterbending growing up, or that she learned the other elements before turning 16? And in either case, on what basis? (Spoilers?)
