Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Rennard thinks for a few moments after the fencing master's unspoken accusation. After careful consideration, the duelist expresses his suspicions
Before Trinia was declared the assassin, it seemed most logical that the blame for the King's demise would lie with those that benefited from his death. Hence, we could posit that whoever benefited from the Queen's ascension could be a suspect
If we take into consideration the Seneschal's rise and the involvement with Trinia's "confession", he would be a reasonable target to begin our investigationsAvatar by me

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
"The difficulty," Vencarlo replies, "is that one cannot simply investigate the Seneschal. His role is to oversee the monarch and prevent tyranny, which is why normally he is selected by the Magistrates. But the old Seneschal disappeared during the riots, when a state of emergency had been declared. That state of emergency gave all power to the Queen, including the power to appoint a new Seneschal. The appointment is for life, usually. I suppose that the Queen could disbar him while she still retains her emergency powers, but to ask her to do so would reveal both we have found Trinia Sabor."
He clasps his hands together. "I ask of you something rather more urgent. Trinia cannot stay here, in the city. It is only a matter of time before she is discovered, and I cannot keep my school closed indefinitely without arousing suspicion. I would consider it a great service if you could escort her out the city gates. From there, I have contacts who will take her to the town of Harse. She should be safe there, until her innocence can be proven. But first she needs to get there."Last edited by Leviathan; 2012-01-26 at 03:37 PM.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Of course, Maestro replies Rennard
I'm glad we are protecting her instead of sending her to her execution chimes in the blade
The magus agrees telepathically with Reve and begins to formulate plans to transport the young woman outside of Korvosa. After a bit, he shares with his companions the ideas he deemed more likely to succeed
We should consider repeating our former deception of disguising Trinia as Kalinda, for it would bring the least attention upon us. I can also prepare Vanishing spells that could render her invisible: though they won't last long, they might provide the ability to bypass any sensitive check points.
Any other ideas?Avatar by me

"Ah, yes," begins Aldrin with a smirk, "The weakness of traditional wizardry: preparation. We need to get Trinia out of here as soon as possible, and I don't think we have time for you to get a good night's sleep before-hand. We'll have to proceed with whatever you have selected for the current day, but don't worry..." his grin widens, revealing his sharp teeth, "I'm good at dispersing a crowd."

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Realizing that Aldrin was right and there was no time to lose, the duelist agrees
You are right, we don't have time for extensive planning and preparation. So we all know our available resources I might be able to make Trinia invisible up to nine times today, each one for almost half a minute. Though the more times I were to use this, the more I would deplete the abilities I use while fighting.
Though, ideally, there won't be any need for altercations.
Rennard then focuses on each of his companions, trying to use the data he has collected on each of them to improve the probabilities of success
Dastan, since you are constrained by your oaths, I would like to know what would you be willing to do and say. The presence of a paladin could be beneficial if we were to be intercepted, but that might require you to be dishonest
When the fencer is to advice the sorcerer, Reve stops him
I think it's best if you let Aldrin decide for himself. He does not seem to like being told what to do...
But we cannot coordinate our strategies otherwise protests the duelist
Sometimes, a good dynamic is better than a perfect plan assures the rapier
Deferring to the blade on this matter, Rennard moves on to the other members of the group
Atavian, Tallox's presence might prove to our advantage. Any pair eyes looking at him is one fewer set of eyes that will be looking at Trinia. Also, the eagles you have summoned before could provide us with distractions at key moments
Jensi, be ready to charm any commanding officials if we are detained for long questioning. Hopefully, that approach would minimize damageLast edited by Drothmal; 2012-01-27 at 07:12 PM.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Dastan looks at Trinia sharply for another moment or two then abruptly states, "I believe you. I have never been satisfied with the evidence laid against you, and your "confession" seems to me an obvious sham. I will do my best to see that you are not punished for a crime you did not commit." He nods in agreement with Rennard's indictment of the Chancellor. "I must agree, the Chancellor seems an obvious suspect. It may be difficult, but I believe he must be the next step in our investigation."
----
"My oaths are simple: Do no harm to innocents, do all in my power to prevent the commission of an Evil act, do not lie. That said, the last is... Rather flexible. While I may not tell a lie, my oaths do not forbid me from making misleading statements in the service of my other oaths." He smiles, then continues in a slightly hushed, somewhat conspiratorial tone. "In this case, I think it would be entirely appropriate to state that we are escorting a young woman out of the city because her life has been endangered by criminals. Engineering a false confession and attempting to execute an innocent woman are certainly criminal acts, are they not, and there is no question of the threat to her life." He looks around the room, pondering while Rennard makes plans with the rest of the group. "Perhaps further layers of misdirection would be useful. If we were to dye Trinia's hair a different colour and apply makeup to change her skin tone, guards who have not seen her in person would not likely recognize her. Best to avoid magic if at all possible; it is sadly vulnerable to the effects of other magic. Mundane cosmetics are much more difficult to see through."Last edited by DaedalusMkV; 2012-01-27 at 05:18 PM.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Rennard, agreeing with the logic behind the paladin's reasoning, nods at Dastan's decision.
While hearing his blade laughing in the back of his mind, the magus replies to the oracle's .... attempts to improve on the plan
There is a low that mud will do the trick, Jensi. says the fencer But Dastan is right, securing a set of cosmetics could improve our chances by a considerable amount. As soon as we procure one and have Trinia disguised, we should move. Further delays could thwart the whole missionAvatar by me

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Vencarlo retrieves a collection of materials for Trinia's disguise, explaining with a shrug that "if all else failed, I'd have gotten her out myself." A voluminous coat is thrown over Trinia's slender frame, her hair is tied back and dyed a vibrant orange-red. Finally, girl's skin is 'tanned' with powder. It is, altogether, an impressive change.
"Right," Vencarlo says; "you'd best be off. Remember, my contact will be just outside the gates. Look for a man with a pair of horses. Ask him where he's going; he will reply with the words 'I am a lone wanderer, looking for a lovely lass to take home with me.' Good luck."
The swordmaster holds the doors of his school open for you as you leave, stepping out onto the path leading across the academy's pristine yard, out to its surrounding stone wall. The dreary sky above is rolling with grey clouds, casting a uniform shadow across everything.
As you approach the iron-wrought gates, they swing open towards you with a squeak. A tall man, hooded and cloaked, stands in the gateway. His face is pale and, his black hair is long and greasy, and he moves with an arrogant saunter. With a twirl of his hands, a pair of serrated, wickedly-curved swords appear from under his cloak. "Five enter," he crows, "but six return. I think that our suspicions of Mister Vencarlo's treachery has proven well-founded, eh boys?"
Two more figures step out from behind the wall, flanking their leader. Each has a straight broadsword drawn, and are similarly cloaked. One, a lanky woman with short cropped hair, replies: "I think traitors get gutted." The other, a flat-faced man, nods in agreement.
"Kill them. Save the sixth, if possible."
Surprise Round:
SpoilerUnfortunately, you've failed your perception checks, so...
The figures at the gate hold their ground, smirks written large on their faces. The reason why is quickly apparent as a pair of arrows whiz from the academy's garden, flying towards Jensi. One passes narrowly over the oracle's head, but another hits him in the shoulder, sticking there.
Spoiler12 damage to Jensi.
The sources are quickly apparent; two men stand with compact bows trained on you, leaning out from behind the academy's well-pruned trees.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
"Dammit!" Aldrin shouts as the enemy plan is set into motion. He is starting to realize just how seldom the group gets to be the ambushers rather than the ambushees. He slowly moves toward the leader, his hands brimming with the icy energy that has been serving him well so far.
"We'll see who dies," he says as motes of chilling frost rise up from the ground by their apparent leader.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Rennard has an uncommon reaction upon hearing the thug's words: He felt fear. If these men were to report on the Maestro, the fencing master would surely be executed.
We will not let that happen, bonded whispers the blade reassuringly as it becomes unsheathed and empowered by Rennards magical reservoir
For a quick moment, the duelist analyzes the battleground. Aldrin had targeted the larger enemy concentration. Tallox was closest to one archer and Dastan would probably move into melee against the larger enemy forces
That left the second archer unhindered and with a perfect shot for either Jensi, Atavian or Trinia

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Fel frost rises from the ground at Aldrin's command, icy tendrils clutching at the legs of the black haired leader with his serrated swords, and at the flat-faced man. Both shiver, their bodies locking in place, and their skin turning a cold, searing white wherever it is touched.
Rennard casts a defensive ward over himself as he dashes forwards, Reve flashing as the duelist draws the blade from its sheath and infuses it with magic.
SpoilerIf you have a BAB of +1 or higher, you can draw a weapon as part of a move.
Atavian weaves his own magic, a powerful blessing that settles upon many of his companions. Meanwhile, Tallox rushes forwards, a wall of razor-like teeth and claws. The leader of your foes, despite Aldrin's frost, sidesteps the eidolon with a hiss.
Dastan follows Tallox into battle, swinging his longsword in a fearsome chop. The attack connects squarely, cutting deeply and drawing out a gout of blood.
Jensi recovers from his wound, healing himself of the worst of it.
The cloaked figures waste no time, moving forward as one in a well-coordinated assault. Their swords whistle through the air towards Tallox and Dastan. The short haired woman slashes at Dastan. Though her stroke is deftly made and well trained, it cannot get past the paladin's stout defences. But she leaves an opening for her leader, whose sword jams into Dastan's back with precision.
Spoiler24 damage to Dastan.
The flat-faced man cuts at Tallox with his blade. His well-trained blow connects hard with the eidolon.
Spoiler15 damage to Tallox.
As Rennard moves towards one of the cloaked assailants, the man drops his bow, drawing his sword and swinging it at the duelist. It is parried, however, clattering away to little effect.
The other archer too drops his blow, unsheathing his sword as her charges towards Jensi. The blade comes down on the oracle, and once again Jensi is injured.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Aldrin's spell burns into its target's brain. The thug clutches his head, doubled over in pain.
Dastan swings his longsword twice; both strikes are very near things. The leader's two blades are barely able to deflect the attacks away, and his eyes show uncertainty.
Rennard's rapier jabs twice into the man with whom he fights, making him roar with pain. Neither attack is telling, though, and the thug keeps his feat, sword at the ready.
Tallox shifts his weight, throwing his whole body into a vicious attack on the thugs' leader. He slashes with his claws and rends with his jaws, and by the time he is finished, the leader lies dead on the pathway, bloody gashes torn into his chest.
Atavian casts another spell, and a sheen of grease coats the ground. The thug who stands atop it dances about, managing to keep his feet, but only barely.
Jensi takes advantage of the thug's distraction to scurry backwards, sending a wave of healing energy over the battlefield.
SpoilerRocketMan, the five foot step you took would have excluded both Dastan and Tallox from the AoE of your Channel. I assume this was not your intent, so I took the liberty of moving differently such that both are included. So, in short, everyone damaged gets healed.
One of the thugs pursues Rennard backwards, wielding his sword in another attack on the duelist. He gets past Rennard's defence, knocking Reve aside, barely penetrating his magical barrier, and delivering a blow to the arm.
Spoiler7 damage to Rennard.
The thug who had been engaged with Tallox finds the eidolon departed. He takes a long look at the remains of his boss, then charges off towards Aldrin. He chops at the sorcerer with deadly precision, cutting deeply into the sorcerer's side.
Spoiler11 damage to Aldrin.
The final thug is able to get his blade around Dastan's shield, but the paladin's plate proves too sturdy to penetrate.

"Shelyn preserve us all!" Jensi cries over the sounds of battle. His holy symbol flashes as he raises it over his head, and white light washes over the combat.

Atavian steps back, loads his bow and takes aim, firing at the the thug in the sludge.
Tallox grins - his smile stretching quite literally ear to ear - and says to Dastan, "I got this one, go help them." He steps again and launches another all out attack against the nearby assailant.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Dastan nods in response to Tallox's statement and leaves the thug to the Beyonder, charging back to protect the spellcasters from the remaining opponents. He strikes again, putting all of his momentum behind his sword swing hoping to eliminate the man before he has a chance to attack Jensi or Atavian again.
Spoiler
Charging at T1. This provokes an Attack of Opportunity from T2, assuming that he survives Tallox's onslaught. Also, Dastan isn't using his shield right now; he only wears it when he expects combat to happen, and otherwise keeps it on his back. He hasn't had a chance to equip it.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
The thug's blow leaves a small trail of blood across the duelist's white shirt. Just as Rennard's arm begins to go numb and the fencer worries that he might drop the blade in the next assault, Jensi's healing waves reach the magus, mending the wound and restoring the duelist to perfect battle conditions
With silent determination, Rennard feints to the fourth parry (the foe's left flank), disengages and delivers a cut to the opposite side, followed by a remis to the chest

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Jensi once again calls upon Shelyn, knitting his companions' wounds together with healing magic.
Tallox rends the nearest thug in two savagely. Trinia lets out a little "eep!" at the sight. Atavian meanwhile launches a crossbow bolt at the grease-striken thug, but it misses him entirely, lodging in the academy's door.
Dastan, freed up to charge by Tallox, rushes at his foe. His opponent turns away from Aldrin at the last moment, parrying the paladin's sword stroke.
Aldrin blasts the thug standing shakily in Atavian's grease spell with sorcery of his own. The man winces in deep pain, but keeps his grip on his sword tight and his stance ready.
Rennard lauches a complex series of strikes, but the thug proves a capable swordsman, matching each with a block.
This time, the thug standing in the grease is able to move, sliding forwards off the spell. His comrade catches his eye and steps away from Dastan. Simultaneous, the pair stab at Aldrin from either side. Their swords are deadly accurate, both cutting deep and hard.
Spoiler33 damage to Aldrin.
Rennard's opponent lunges at him, longsword slashing through the air. Once again, he finds his way through the magus' guard.
Spoiler11 damage to Rennard.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Dastan strides forwards after the thug, then winces sympathetically as Aldrin receives a pair of greivous wounds. "Get off him, scoundrels! Unless you're frightened of facing a real warrior?" His shadow deepens and his weapon seems to take on a slight, barely visible golden aura as he calls on the power of the Divine to strike down the thug.
Spoiler
5-foot step closer to T1, activate Smite Evil targeting T1 as a Swift action and Full Attack. We can't afford to let these guys keep beating up our casters... Once again, Power Attack is in effect, and I believe I have a Flank bonus.

Damage 1: (1d8+14)[21]
Attack 2: (1d20+14)[23]

Assuming, of course, that our targets are Evil. If not, subtract 4 from the To Hit and Damage rolls.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
As the blood rains around Tallox, he wheels about, assessing the situation. The moment Dastan's blade falls, Tallox foresees the hit. He sprints across the battlefield at the thug next to Aldrin.
Atavian sees on one side of the battle field, there is Dastan and Tallox against a single foe. The other pits Rennard, 1-on-1. The halfling throws some magical assistance to the magus.
Action:
