Re: ATW's Awesome Androgynous Avaricious Azure Ardent Adamant Alluvial Random Banter
So while browsing through wikipedia I came across an interesting person. A man called Witold Pilecki, who actually had the courage to volunteer to be imprisoned in Auschwitz. To this day he's the only known person to do this. While he was there he helped form a resistance within the camp, and provided information about the atrocities there to the Allies. He broke out in 1943 and proceeded to go to Warsaw to fight Germans in the Warsaw uprising of 1944. He did some important things in that fight, including holding an important position for two weeks under relentless attack. He was taken prisoner when the resistance forces capitulated, and was freed in 1945 from a POW camp. He then proceeded to spy on the Stalinist regime for the next few years, until he was arrested in 1947. He was kept in prison and tortured for almost a year, though he revealed no sensitive information. Finally in 1948 he was executed and buried in an unmarked grave.
That's just..incredible. Witold Pilecki, for badassery of the highest kind under extreme circumstances, I salute you.Avatar by Serpentine.

Dragon... Where do you find the interesting/amazing articles? My random article/browsing is never fun.
Also... Wow. Reading through my older posts, I was really immature.
Really hoping I'm not like that anymore...

Re: ATW's Awesome Androgynous Avaricious Azure Ardent Adamant Alluvial Random Banter
Just chance I suppose. I'm going to visit Auschwitz in less than a week, so I read a bit about it on Wikipedia. As I scroll down I suddenly see a picture with the caption "Witold Pilecki only known person to volunteer to be imprisoned at Auschwitz concentration camp". Intrigued, I looked closer. Really, it's a matter of knowing where to look. Pretty much any major war is going to have men like him. Although when looking through philosophy you might find some characters who are not quite so badass, but who certainly will put a smile on your face. Go look up Diogenes the Cynic. You won't be disappointed.
I have the same opinion about my own old posts, and I likewise wonder about the current ones. Best thing I can say to you is that your posts aren't immature. Trust me, I'm a guy from the internet. I know things.Avatar by Serpentine.

Re: ATW's Awesome Androgynous Avaricious Azure Ardent Adamant Alluvial Random Banter
Seriously, check out Diogenes. Why? Well, when Alexander the Great came to visit him and grant him a wish out of respect for him. Diogenes was lying in the sun when Alexander with his many statesmen and philosophers came to him. When Alexander asked him if he could do anything for him, Diogenes looked up at one of the greatest conqueror of all time, a killer of thousands, and said "Get out of my light." His life is one long chain of similar stories of hilarious greatness.

Re: ATW's Awesome Androgynous Avaricious Azure Ardent Adamant Alluvial Random Banter
USA! USA! USA!
Indeed. It is why the Greek philosophers will always be the best. Other brilliant ones have come along since then (Hooray for St. Thomas!), but none have as many awesome stories about them. Diogenes is the best though. The most awesome thing about the whole story with Alexander is that he survived totally unpunished. Alexander the Great actually thought it was hilarious and walked away laughing.Last edited by DraPrime; 2011-07-17 at 04:25 PM.

Re: ATW's Awesome Androgynous Avaricious Azure Ardent Adamant Alluvial Random Banter
Japan won? You make me so sad. I already have no hope for Poland winning either the Euro Cup in 2012, or the men's world cup in 2014, and now I get no satisfaction of a USA win? Soccer is depressing.
I'm gonna go get happier by reminding myself that the Bruins won the Stanley Cup.Avatar by Serpentine.

Re: ATW's Awesome Androgynous Avaricious Azure Ardent Adamant Alluvial Random Banter
Oh I love soccer too. I just get way more satisfaction out of watching American sports because the people that I root for actually win. Poland and America are not great soccer countries. On the other hand, Boston WINS as baseball, football, hockey, and basketball.*
* Yes, I know some of these sports aren't exclusively American, in particular hockey. But they're sports that are popular in this country, and are a big part of the culture.Last edited by DraPrime; 2011-07-17 at 04:48 PM.
