Default [Nexus] Riverside IV: Offside, 10 Yard Penalty

    Thanks to Darklord Bright.

Riverside, a small, modern city outside the reach of Remnant control. The city has always been known by one defining factor, it's status as a hive of scum and villainy. A number of factions vie for footholds in the city, though they are largely peaceful at the moment. No doubt some would jump at the opportunity to expand their influence. Being the hive and scum and villainy that it is, the police are corrupt, the streets can be dangerous, and shady deals and dark alleys are plenty. Welcome to Riverside.

    Northside:
    Spoiler
    Show
Northside, the richer part of Riverside. If you have money then you can get just about anything in Northside. That is if you know the right people. There is something odd about this part of Riverside though. Hardly a beggar or street urchin to be seen. In fact for a place of scum and villainy this place is too clean. Northside is the one that wears the best mask in Riverside. The best at covering up deaths and drug deals. The best at making everyone think that there is nothing wrong because everybody pays their protectors and rulers of Northside with what they ask for. This is Northside. A rich mask that hides the dirty city for what it is.

    Factions:
    • The Followers of Scaal:
      Spoiler
      Show
The followers of Scaal are spoken of in hushed tones. When a black robed figure goes by people stop talking and give him the space he needs. These are the followers of Scaal. Not much is known about them besides they possess great magic, they protect this part of the city and its inhabitants for the right price, and rumors have it that Scaal is some sort of god or demon perhaps.

      Played by ApeofLight.

    Eastside:
    Spoiler
    Show
    Coming Soon

    Factions:

    Westside:
    Spoiler
    Show
Westside, where vampires walk openly on the street. Mostly because said vampires govern this part of the city. The city has been cloaked in a field of eternal night allowing the vampires to walk freely. Furthermore, each mortal citizen is required to donate blood to sustain the vampires. In exchange, the streets are kept clean, for the most part. Of course, the cover of darkness does attract criminals as well as less beneficent creatures of the night.

    Factions:
    • Tenebras:
      Spoiler
      Show
The vampires of Riverside came to the Nexus from the city of Gul-Thadar, a city where vampires and humans live in harmony. They took up the role of governing Westside after the city's leadership collapsed. Humans and vampires alike fill their ranks. They aren't above unsavory methods or shady deals, but they keep a good public face.

      Played by Gulaghar.

((All vampire NPCs associated with Riverside should be assumed to be controlled by Gulaghar unless otherwise stated.))

    Places Within:
    Spoiler
    Show
    Northside
    • Moth Park:
      Spoiler
      Show
About 100 acres big, the moth park is approximately rectangular in shape, with a bandshell/performance stage at the north end, a soccer (football) field and softball diamond at the south and a forested area in the center.

It also holds two playgrounds (swing sets, slides, monkey bars) several fountains (most of which are nonfunctional) various statues and a network of walking paths.

Since the re-opening, Moth park is pretty popular with the local residents as well as those who come into the area to work or visit.

The park have a park guard which keeps out most small-time criminals and drug-dealers which makes it considered safe, at least during day time.
    • Police Station:
      Spoiler
      Show
The police station is a large but simple brick building. All police activity is based out of this building. It's outfitted with interrogation rooms, a few offices, and other rooms that a police station would have.
    • Sawyer's Inn:
      Spoiler
      Show
The inside of Sawyer's is beautiful, though humble. Whoever keeps the place, keeps it in fine condition.

The dark wooden floors are waxed and shiny. There are four wooden pillars that reach up to the ceiling. The four walls are painted in a brick red, with light grey accents.

Along the left wall there is a large hearth fire burning, with a dog and cat sleeping together. The dog raises it's head slightly to observe the newcomers, but doesn't rush to sniff them out.

Along the right wall is the customer service area, with a dining hall just past it. The smell of freshly baked bread and some kind of meat can be smelled eminating from beyond.

And then there is the back wall. There is a set of stairs leading up and another leading down. Both sets are made of the same wood as the pillars and floor.

    Eastside
    • Golden Flagon Tavern:
      Spoiler
      Show
The Golden Flagon Tavern was the main hideout of the local mafia, when it was run by Johan.

After a confrontation with Reinholdt, Johan was killed, and the Golden Flagon nearly destroyed. It's current owner is in the midst of restoration.
    • Wellspring Tower:
      Spoiler
      Show
The Walls: Made of thick glass and capped with walkways of stone, the walls and their five, short, twisted square towers are arranged in a perfect pentagon. Each wall has its own gate, which leads to one of the blue paths in the courtyard.

Courtyard: The blue paths of the courtyard and the river form spiraling patterns that focus on the tower itself, and are edged with statues, fountains, and pools. From the courtyard, one can admire the strange design of the tower, a massive spire of twisting stone and glass that appears as a tree without leaves; further, one can listen to the tower's song, created by the flowing of water and air through the hollowed tubing on the tower.

Library: Rather than books the library stores a vast array of unusual objects, from art pieces to weapons to plants. Each of these objects has a history, and many of them were created by Genesis. The library is kept by Sigrun, the lorekeeper, and it can usually be found on the lower floors of the tower.

Armory: Usually positioned nearby the library, the armory is a relatively small but well guarded room in which most currently unusued weapons are stored and also kept ready for combat. Hilda the handler is in charge of the armory.

Throne Room: Near the top of the tower is the throne room, a circular room with five levels, at the top of which is the throne of Genesis. It is only used for the most formal events. Ragna the scribe can always be found at the right hand of the throne when it is being used.

Basement: Though easily seen from the lower floor of the tower, it is apparently inaccessible, the only opening to it cut off with magic and a curtain of water. Whatever is inside, it glows strangely.

    Westside
    • Club Pulse:
      Spoiler
      Show
The club is quite easily noticed by the huge neon sign outside, Pulse was easily recognized as Riversides largest nightclub. Beyond the line and the bouncer outside is a classic club layout with a large dance floor with loud music and flashing lights.

In a slightly more calm area of the club is the bar run by an one-eyed bartender called Ryo.

There are two stairs leading up to the upper floor where it's easier to talk and drink.

The atmosphere is pretty heavy as you walk inside with techno music playing very loud.
    • Evolution Industries:
      Spoiler
      Show
The Westside branch of EI. The main building is a fairly nondescript, tall (not a skyscraper or anything, but still with several floors) modern one, with a large Evolution Industries logo on it.
    • Exbourne Manor:
      Spoiler
      Show
Basement: The servant quarters, for dominated mortals, is set up neatly with a row of beds, as well as a relaxation section with comfy chairs and sofas. Plenty of plushies have been provided for the mortals to snuggle with, as well as some non-violent games and toys. There's no television or books though. Bathrooms have been installed for the mortals to use as well. It's all very comfortable and pleasant, except for the part about being eaten at any time.

Ground floor: The ground floor is brightly decorated with colourful paints and vases of flowers. One might have a hard time believing it was the home of vampires. Important rooms include Ramiro's office, kitchen, living room, Aunt Riley's bedroom, Mateo's bedroom.

2nd floor: The second floor is, like the ground floor, brightly decorated. It mostly contains bedrooms. Notable rooms include Gabriel and Tia's room.

3rd floor: The third floor is also bright and cheery. Similar to0 the second floor, there are mostly bedrooms.

Attic: The attic is the only floor of the house not painted brightly. It serves little purpose except as access to the tower. Ghar's room is also here, but there is no visible entrance.

Tower: A small toward was added since the vampires moved in. It serves to house the spell that keeps Westside in perpetual darkness. At the top room of the tower, in the middle of the room is what appears to be a mass of unnatural darkness. It also functions as a watchtower of sorts, and a at least three vampires can be found patrolling it.

    History: by Lex-kat
    Spoiler
    Show
Long, long ago, Riverside was a simple fishing village.

It was able to blossom into a city once trade begun, because of it's placement not only on the river, but between most of the other small villages within this area of the Nexus.

Of course, this means that the Merchants were able to take over the government of the city. But other than that, it remained quite peaceful.

Very few other cities attack Riverside, and it would remain neutral in conflicts. Though, due to the few that did try to attack it, the citizens of Riverside did develop a small military force. For protection purposes only, of course.

For years, Riverside grew in power, yet never exerted it over any of the other villages. That is, until a man named Johnny Duluth came to power.

At first, the people loved him. He was fair and just. And soon, he brought even more prosperity to Riverside.

Then a change. A small force of unknown marauders besieged the city. Mayor Johnny declared a state of emergency, reorganized the military, and with the help of some of his aides, transformed them into a offensive unit.

After a long 4 month battle, Riverside won a decisive victory. But they didn't stop there. Mayor Johnny declared that a nearby village was responsible for the attack.

He personally led the military and crushed the village with no resistance.

Some Merchants balked at this, and tried to warn the citizens of the dangers of allowing Mayor Johnny to take this power.

They were all silenced, one way or the other. Bought off, murdered, or their families kidnapped and held hostage.

By the time the residents realized what was happening, it was too late. They found themselves over run by the same marauders that they had "defeated" before.

Soon, the city was run by a Mafia-dictatorship, and Johnny Duluth was it's mayor.

What the citizens didn't know, was that Johnny Duluth was just a puppet. There was another man pulling his strings.

Ezekial Von Hookes, a prominent member of the Merchant class had employed Johnny for just this. He even arranged for his own daughter, Patricia, to be kidnapped, tortured, and finally returned to him a gibbering mess.

Mayor Johnny ruled Riverside for thirty years, before dying of a sudden heart attack at the age of 78.

A kinder, gentler man took his place, returning Riverside to a peaceful, defensive center of commerce it was before Johnny Duluth took over.

The citizens were happy. But deep within the dark corners, and under the city foundations, the Mafia still ruled. Ezekial passed his hidden empire to his son-in-law, Cameron.

Cameron and Patricia (yes that Patricia) had a son, Frederick Von Hookes. Cameron raised his son to be his successor. Slowly the citizens of Riverside became aware, yet intentionally ignorant, of the criminals that were truly in charge.

People would disappear, and the police did nothing. There were rumors of daughters from surrounding villages being kidnapped and sold to wealthy men, or held under the bar for the local prostitution ring.

By the time Frederick "retired", and Jonah took over, everyone in the city knew that the city was run by a mostly hidden group of men, maybe some women.

When Reinholdt came to town, and murdered Johan, and set the prostitutes free, business came to a screeching halt.

The Green Flagon Bar, where Johan ran his business out of, shut down for repairs. But has only just recently reopened.

There is rumors that Frederick has returned. ASnd people are afraid. Where Johan was cunning, Frederick was brutal.

    ++++++++++++++++++

The police are owned by the Mafia. Unless you wish to die, you turn a blind eye to any crime you see.

For the most part, the citizens are protected. Only those who try to reform or change the current system find themselves on the wrong end of the "law".

Otherwise, the victims are from the more rural villages surrounding Riverside.

The Mafia has dealings with people in other large cities, including the Empire run Inside. Though most of those are in deep hiding since the Empire took over.

More recently, SAINT, the Assassins guild has sprung up in the cities underworld. Since there has been no fighting between the guild and the Mafia, it is assumed that they have a peaceful agreement with each other.

Of course, in the most recent happenings, the Golden Flagon has been shot up recently when a human female and some blue girl came asking questions.

Soon after they disappeared, an earthquake struck the twon, felling many buildings. A strange man named Riv is reported to have been to blame. How that can be, the citizens do not know.

    They are currently rebuilding.

"You can let her go now. Let her suffer in Nivucist's clutches." Durin says to the necromancer.

Astrana have no experience with men either though since she is trying new things today, so why not this as well?

She shakes her head, "No... I like it." In fact, she wouldn't even mind if he's a bit rough which can be common.

Valente grins and continues to kiss her. His hands wander freely over her body. It's all a little awkward, but practice makes perfect, right? It has to end sometime, as Valente isn't going to go any further than he already has. Though, a large part of him is telling him to go for it.

"Have I said how much I love spending time with you?" He asks, smiling wide and keeping his face close to hers.

One would hope so at least. Let's see if our young gentlevamp can handle this situation appropriately shall we?

Astrana is actually busy touching his body as well after all which might make it easier for him to shall we say, lose control. "I kinda guessed after the kiss..." She muses. "Your family won't mind they?" They did remind her of something similar in her own world after all.

"Oh, I love the screaming part."

Eval seems disappointed when she finally breaks down and he has to wave the malevolent spirit away. He listens to her attentively, wondering if he can use any of the information to his advantage. When she's finished, he looks to be in a scheming mood.

    "Very well. You are dismissed."

He waves a hand, and Rose's spirit should be violently jerked back to whatever afterlife she was in. The necromancer then turns to Durin.

    "And the payment?"

Durin retrieves a breifcase from behind the table and open it for Eval to see. It's money. The amount specified earlier. "That should be everything."

    [Exbourne Manor - Astrana's Room]

Losing control is a very real possibility. We'll see. "Not at all. I'm sure they'd like you." Ramiro might have a problem if she interferes with his (poorly defined) work however. Valente's hands haven't exactly completely stopped moving either, but slower than before.

Eval inspects the money with a practiced eye, quickly estimating how much is in the briefcase to make sure it's the right amount.

"Very well. Everything seems to be in order."

He goes to close the briefcase and grab it so he can leave. Unless Durin has anything more to say.

    House in Westside

The arrival of the mysterious man was noted by skeletal monkey hidden amongst the chimney pots of a house nearby. As he seemed interesting, his movements were followed and the monkey attempts to get closer, trying to find a window to listen outside of.

One wonders if the screams were heard.

"Perhaps that would be best, yes. Also, I would like to know if you sent anybody besides the vampires to investigate my nephew." The girl's screaming alerted a guard, who burst in and discovered what had happened; the guard raised the alarm, and somebody either told a monkey, or a monkey overheard and told Mortius.

The building is warded to prevent scrying any to make it sound proof. Forgot to mention it before.

"We'll keep you in mind." Some time after Victor leaves, Durin also heads back toward the manor. He's holding the dufflebag containing Rose's corpse and takes a discreet path back.

"I'll be sending someone soon then." Ramiro says. He frowns somewhat at the next question. "Not that I know of. I had left Durin in charge of it. Any particular reason you ask?"

Eval leaves in the same manner he came: stepping through a blot of shadow. The malevolent spirits follow him, thankfully.

He has a letter to write. The vampires never paid him to keep what they had him do for them a secret, after all.

Durin's leaving is noted, and he is followed by monkey eyes. Since there are three outside the Manor (one in a tree along the front drive, one in the gargoyles, and one near Mateo's room) the watchers change several times. They all do their best to keep hidden, however.

Eval is also followed, though if he teleports or turns invisible then the monkeys lose him. If he enters a vehicle, they'll take a note of the registration and keep an eye out for the vehicle, plus break into wherever records of cars are kept to look up the owner of the vehicle.

    Exbourne Manor

"Shortly after your group left, an assassin jumped out of Durk's wardrobe, cut his head off and teleported off with it. The only people with access to Durk's bedroom are Durk, Sindi, Maria and one of the guards. Sindi and Maria are hysterical at the moment, and aren't fit to give an accurate discription. The guard claimed that only your group entered that day, and all were accounted for when they left. I was wondering if you knew anything about it, that's all. Oh, and do you trust Durin?"

"We hold a similar belief, I and the others were once demons after all." Technically they are still demons, they are just using their armors the suppress their nature or so they believe.

"I especially believe in redemption rather then purging which is a popular belief among the other servants."

"I do trust him." In fact, he's Ramiro's most trusted lieutenant. They've been working together for a long time. "I'll be sure to discuss the matter with Durin."

"So you are aware that Durin has just left a building with an unidentified male, whilst Durin carries a duffel bag? They had a conversation, though the building was warded and I did not wish to puncture it in case the ward was designed to alert those within about the attempted breach of privacy." So it's not really related at all; it was just breaking news as it were.

"So I could stay here then... permanently?" Astrana asks, clearly quite distracted with the treatment she is getting.
It might be even harder for Valente to keep control now that Astranas hands wanders elsewhere on his body.

    [Outside Riverside]

Having to wash off the gore and the blood in the river the city is so famously known for Irena takes a long look at her reflection. How could she live like this? How had she been able to live like this for so long? Like some kind of animal?

But what else where there? All she knew was to steal, sneak and kill, she had no other skills. No other skills at all. Her head still felt as empty as ever.

She glances at her new sword which she washed off as well, that was the only pretty thing she had. Everything else was just rubbish, she had no family, no money, nothing.

It felt like she wanted to cry again, but that wouldn't help with anything. She eyes the sword again and remembers something from her books about Japaneses culture. It somehow seemed more tempting now, to just end it all, would anyone even find her body out here? No one would even know her name, there wasn't a person in the world who would remembered her. She would just be swallowed up by the earth. Like she never had existed.

She takes up the sword and let's her fingers run over the edge, she easily drew blood but the pain didn't seem to bother her that much anymore. Maybe that was a sign?

Irena then let's the swords edge touch her stomach , seppuku they had called it in the book. She looks at the sword again...

She was holding it all wrong.

Irena suddenly smiles to herself, she couldn't even commit suicide properly.

And the moment was over, she didn't want to do it anymore.

She still had some money right? Maybe she could find someone to help her get a real life somehow, to get a proper house filled with... things.

Getting up she wipes off her blood against the edge of the sword and grabs her backpack. She was going to find a real place to call her own. Maybe one of those manors the demons had...

"Yeah, I'm sure you cou- Oh." And it doesn't look like Valente will be doing anymore talking at this point. Mostly because his attention has been fully diverted to getting her clothes off rather quickly. "Do you want to...?" If she continues with her current variety of actions, the vampire is going to try to pull the curtain in short order

    [Exbourne Manor - Ramiro's Office]

"I am aware. In fact, I sent him." Ramiro informs Mortius.

"And here I thought you would ravish me." Astrana teases Valente, sticking out her tongue right before the curtain is pulled. This will no doubt be quite awkward considering how inexperienced they both are in this section.

Considering Valente is undead and thus never will run out of stamina it's safe to say that Astrana is the one to eventually stop with this awkwardness. Feeling very satisfied even it really wasn't how she had imagined it in her head.

"How does it feel?" Astrana says with a soft voice as she watches Valente laying there next to her with a smile on her face. Poor Valente, had to die before he could experience this.

    [Outside The Manor]

Irena have spied on the manor for days on and in when she stalked the vampires. Always begging outside the manor. This time it was different, she was actually going to break inside.

What would she know about the manor from knowing a lot about magic and having watched it for a very long time?

Oh yes, most awkward indeed. I'm sure they figure it out well enough to enjoy themselves immensely though.

"Amazing." Valente says with a grin. Being a vampire does dampen the experience for him, but he's most definitely not going to complain. With any luck, there'll be a next time and he'll get to bite her during the curtain.

"You're amazing." He shifts right close to her so he can put his arms around her and hold her close.

    [Outside The Manor]

Irena will have likely found some pattern in how the vampires come and go, also when they receive visitors the door is answered quickly. Presumably at least the front entrance is watched much of the time. The curtains in the windows are almost always drawn except for the odd occasion that someone opens them. There are two doors, one in the front and the other in the back, though the back door is not easy to see unless one is in the garden. The front door is most often used, but servants and those wishing to leave discretely use the back door. Magic is a little more tricky. It's definitely there, but I'm not sure how she's able to detect it. There isn't much visible from the outside. A field has been set up over the gardens and manor that redirects teleports to the entrance room. Also, the manor itself has a spell on it to alert those inside when someone enter by any means other than the doors. A recent thing that I've included in the manor is a courtyard like area. It's just basically an open arch that leads into it. Rather than a fence there is a treeline, which surrounds the entire manor and meets the trees in the back garden. In between the arch and the manor itself is a short stretch of road, and the courtyard is otherwise grassy.

    Exbourne backyard

Irena might see a trio of mortals - a young couple and their 4 year old son, playing in the backyard. Vino and Petros are wrestling in the grass, and Claudia is sitting cross legged on the ground nearby, laughing. Of course it's dark, as always, but there are lights up (presumably electric, though Ghar might decide it's something like tiki torches or oil lanterns or something) and the D'Angelis family doesn't think there's anything unusual about playing outdoors in the dark.

Of course there's nothing odd about playing in the dark. What are thay supposed to do, play in the sun?

But yes, there are scattered lights along the house, in the back garden, and along the path. The yard is not without darkness though. Having lived in the darkness for generations, the people from Gul-Thadar can see rather well in the dark. Not as much light is needed than would be otherwise.

Also, one more detail occurred to me, and that is this.

So assuming there are always these three monkeys around, Irena may have spotted them as well at some point. This needs confirmation from Earl however.

Irena is watching the manor far more discreetly now then before when she was just begging for money some distance from it so while the monkeys might have easily noticed her before, they might not be able to now.

Considering she can't detect magic she finds plenty of opportunity here. But as any good thief, she have a reasonable amount of doubt. She needed to find out more about this place first.

Getting into the darkest possible corner she can find (which shouldn't be too hard since it's always night around here) Irena whispers something into the darkness.

"I have questions of interest of Ramiro."

The darkness around her seem to take a life on it's own, swirling like a mist it calls back to her question.

Irena knows the darkness attention is brief however, it would quickly lose interest in her quickly however so she better ask her questions quickly.

"Where does he keep his money? How does he guard them?" The two first questions had been easy but the last one had been harder to figure out. "What does he hold most dear?"

    [Exbourne Manor - Astrana's Room]

Even Astranas tail joined in somewhere I'm sure. <.<

"Thanks, I did my best." He might notice she sounds a bit tired. She can't really keep up with the undead sadly.
She relaxes against him, her skull having been placed turned away from the bed. She didn't want it to watch them.
"Can't believe things or going so well... meet a wonderful guy, get to live in his manor, lose my virginity to said guy..." Astraa smiles and hugs Valente tightly.

Valente gives her a brief peck on the cheek. "I'm glad you're happy. You're the best thing that ever happened to me." The vampire strokes her hair slowly.

There are three monkeys outside the Manor at all times, yes. They watch mainly the comings and goings of the Manor.

"I do as well." Ramiro says. No further information is forthcoming. He wants things kept a secret. "He should be arriving back at any time."

    [Outside The Manor]

The shadows know things! Where the money is kept is an easy one. It's in a number of bank accounts... Of course, she also likely learns on the vault in the basement of the manor that holds a not insignificant amount of money. As for guarding the money, it's actually not overly protected. The vault is itself hard to penetrate, but otherwise she just has the problem of getting into the basement. The last question is rather simple to answer as well. He puts the most value on his own existance.

The tiefling looks slightly embarrassed at that comment. "...thanks, you're the same."

She lays there for a moment without saying anything, slowly closing her eyes. "You'll sleep with me right? I know you don't need to but..."

    [Outside The Manor]

Interesting, well it was time to get working then. She sneaks closer to the manor and start to plan her next move.

((Now her player need to deadtime however.))

Only one of the cars, a rusty old pick-up truck, has reached the hideout yet. Two young punks are busy hauling the stuff they stole inside, looking up for a second when Orrey arrives before realizing he's one of them and going back to work.
