    The Chanter

    Chanters are individuals who find it natural to express reality, in its true form, by words and phrases, literally singing the continuous song of creation. Unlike truenamers, they have an inherent talent in picturing object with words that represent their true nature, they don't have to study such things, but unlike sorcerers, they do study magic itself in a quite academic fashion.

    Organisation: Chanters are very rare and gifted people, but they innately seek the presence of those similar to them, so noticeable organisations do exist, at least in the major capitals. They also can be seen studying or researching alongside wizards and other academic spellcasters.

    Adventuring: Chanters adventure to broaden their understanding of magic and for any other reasons drive adventurers, like accruing fortune or fame.

    Race: Any race can have chanters born in it, but in societies where one is simply too busy with making a living to enjoy life and analyze it thoroughly, like in dwarven lands, it happens rather rarely.

    Class Features:
    Weapons and Armor proficiency: Chanters are proficient with the club, dagger, light crossbow, heavy crossbow, and quarterstaff, but not with any type of armor or shields. Wearing armor incurs arcane spell failure normally

    Spellcasting: A chanter casts arcane spells which are drawn from the sorcerer/wizard spell list (primarily). A chanter must choose and prepare his spells ahead of time, but in a special manner unique to him, unlike normal prepared spellcasters.

    A chanter has a spellbook, just like a wizard, and writing down spells in it works the same way (except that, for the school he specializes in, a chanter may write down spells not on the sor/wiz spell list). Preparation, however, depends on what spells he readies. At any time as long as he is not exhausted and can speak (unlike a wizard, however, a chanter does not need to sleep in order to prepare spells), a chanter can start reciting. Reciting takes as much concentration as a wizard's silent meditation, and must be done on either a normal or a loud tone - whispering does not work. A chanter can recite as many times as he wants during a day - although he is still not allowed to cast spells if he doesn't have the necessary spell slots. When reciting, decide what spells you wish to prepare, and state the order in which you prepare them.

    Level 0 spells take 1 minute to prepare, level 1-5 spells take 5 minutes, and level 6-9 spells take 10 minutes. If you enhance a spell with a metamagic feat, its reciting time increases by 5 minutes. Normally, spells that do not have a verbal component can't be prepared by a chanter at all (he can still write them down in his spellbook). Also, a chanter cannot affect his spells in such a way that they lose their verbal component (like with the Silent Spell metamagic feat). After a chanter stops reciting, forced or by his own will, he is able to use all spells he prepared any number of times each (in the limit of the given spell slots) for 1 hour. This doesn't stack, so if you, say, can cast fireball for 30 minutes and recite it, instead of being able to cast it for 1 hour and 25 minutes, you get to cast it for 1 hour again.

    Like a wizard, a chanter may specialize in a school of magic and as a result have 2 others banned from him (he CAN choose Divination as one of his banned schools, and he must still choose 2 banned schools if he decides to specialize in Divination). He cannot cast spells from the banned schools as normal, however the benefit from the school he specializes in is different. Instead of a bonus to spellcraft and spells per day, the chanter can cast any spell from that school or magic as long as he has it written down, even if it is not on the sor/wiz spell list.

    To learn, prepare, or cast a spell, the chanter must have a Charisma score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a chanter’s spell is 10 + the spell level + the chanter’s Intelligence modifier. He receives bonus spells per day for having a high Charisma score.

    The CL of a chanter is equal to his class level.

    Scribe Scroll: As the wizard feature.

    Verbose (Ex): A chanter really likes talking. He ignores effects that make talking use more than a free action. Also, if an effect that impedes his speech or silences is used on him, a chanter gets a will save against it, or if the effect already allows a non-will save to negate, replace it with a will save, or if the effect already allows a will save, perform the save twice. Also, during a day, the first time a chanter uses Diplomacy on someone, he gains a +4 unnamed bonus to the roll, which then changes to a -2 penalty for the rest of the day.

    Bonus Feat: At levels 5, 10, 15, and 20, a chanter may choose to learn a metamagic or item creation feat, and he must still meet the prerequisites. You qualify for feats that usually require a minimum number of wizard levels as if you had a wizard level equal to your chanter level -2. You may not learn Spell Mastery.

    Interpretation: A chanter of level 8 can create his own version of verbal components for spells. He can now recite spells that do not have a verbal component, although it takes 5 more minutes than normally. When those spells are cast, they are also treated as having a verbal component.

    Eloquence (Ex): A chanter of level 12 learns to multitask, being able to recite and act normally at the same time. When reciting, he constantly loses his swift action every turn and can't do anything that involves speaking (casting spells included), but can take free, move and standard silent actions. Also, the penalty to Diplomacy from Verbose no longer applies.

    Tongues (Su): As the Succubus feature.

    Exalted Chant: At level 20, a chanter may passionately recite spells instead of normally reciting them 5 times per day (as in, 5 spells per day). Passionately reciting takes 5 more minutes than simply reciting, plus all other additions to reciting time, if any. You can't passionately recite while doing anything else, such as with the effect of Eloquence. If a spell is passionately recited, you can cast it without restriction until you go to sleep, instead of the usual 1 hour.

    Okay, so the character adds a verbal component to a spell and it has an increased casting time. This sounds more like a penalty than a benefit. Perhaps increasing the Spellcraft DC of opposing casters to identify the spell would be a good addition.

    Also, 5 additional minutes to cast? Hardly effective in combat. Heck, combat may be over before the spell is cast. Maybe increase the casting increment is a better call; swift action to full round action, rounds to minutes, etc. A spell with a normal casting time of one full round takes one full minute (10 rounds) to cast.

    I don't think you paid too much attention. It is a benefit, because until this class gets interpretation it can't cast spells without verbal component AT ALL.
