I preferred Dead Flag Blues back when it was called Fitter Happier

Seeing as GSY! had been kicking around Dead Flag for several years before it was actually released...

Anyhow, good as Fitter Happier is, and while concision is certainly a merit, the scope of Dead Flag allows it more room to be as weighty and crushing as possible. Again, those aren't usually good things, but they pull it off with enough subtlety to make it work.

See I've never found Dead Flag Blues to be particularly effective. As I may have mentioned before, I find they work best when they stick to instrumentals, they're habit of setting reading monologues over overly long minimalist music (the main melody doesn't arrive until at least three minutes in, and it's not even one of their bleaker ones) comes off as more pretentious than anything else, and that's very much in evidence here. That and I've never found apocalyptic style lyrics to be as good at creating a sense of depression as those that focus on the personal and the present (such as Fitter Happier).

    Differing opinions. Ain't they lovely?

Another horribly depressing song if you know the context is "My S#$t's F#$%#d Up" by Warren Zevon.

Yeah, that one can actually make me tear-up a bit sometimes. Especially given how prophetic it turned-out to be for him

Yeah. That and "Life'll Kill Ya" are just real punches in the gut after what happened to him.

That said, he did seem to keep is very dark sense of humour about it. "I may have committed a tactical error in not visiting a doctor in 20 years."

Still, in tribute to Warren Zevon, I make sure I enjoy every sandwich.

Took a bit of time to properly digest. I definately feel a pinch of Marillion in it (Marbles to be more precise) slightly seasoned in jazz. I like the vocals and the choice of bass as the rythm-giving instrument (there's probably a word for it).

That's certainly the oddest cover of Paint it Black that I've ever heard. I liked it.

Rodrigo y Gabriela also has a great cover of Orion.

They also did Stairway to Heaven, but that one is less good.

So... I recently saw a band called Three Trapped Tigers I'd never heard of before, but they are pretty awesome if you ask me. They are most easily described as live IDM with some rock elements. I.e. Aphex Twin or Squarepusher played live, with no sequencers or backing tracks.

If that was freestyled, it's... mildly impressive, but still pretty unremarkable. I've got probably half a dozen friends who could do better without trying.

Heh. I'll be honest, I don't hate Justin Bieber as much as everyone else seems to. I think I might even have one of his songs on my iPod, the one with Sean Kingston (mainly because the idea that Sean Kingston and Justin Bieber are friends [come at me bro!] is hilarious). I'm not saying he's a good or even passable musician in any way, but it can be way to waste 2 minutes of your time every once in a while.

There's no way that's freestyle. I know freestyle when I hear it, that wasn't freestyle. He obviously couldn't make it as an MC, he's not skilled, but still. You'd expect him to fail spectacularly.

On the other hand, he probably practiced that in front of a mirror for hours and hours. Just in case.

A few years ago I heard about a hip hop duo. They were from New Orleans, and had to flee during Katrina. They released an album afterwards, sometime before 2008 I think. I listened to them a little, and am trying to remember who exactly they were. All I can remember is that they had a song called "Bang Bang" (there might have been a third "Bang" in there) that was pretty catchy, and I think they had a live electric guitar on most of their tracks. They had fairly intelligent lyrics, and I believe "Bang Bang" was a critique of a lot of the hip hop industry.
I don't know if I would call it rap rock, but there was a more "rockish" feel to it than a lot of hip hop, and the guitars sounded pretty bluesy.

Yeah, so if anyone can find them, I'd really appreciate it.

Edit: Found it within seconds of posting this. I've been looking for them for over a year now. Here's a link if anyone's interested. They're called The Knux, and apparently they've grown much in popularity since I first listened to them.

I saw Five Alarm Funk the other night, as a couple friends of mine opened for them, and both were amazing. You aren't gonna find anything myfrinds did, but definitely look up Five Alarm Funk.

Excellent music, huge energy, and an amazing stage show.
