Re: Magic the Gathering XI: When this thread has 50 or more pages, transform it.
Minimum of four fit into Isochron Scepter as the win condition, but I didn't see that as the requests. One was for CMC 2 or less spells for the Scepter to have, the other was cards for a 'stick' deck. Mimic Vat and Prototype Portal are both 'sticks', so are Soul Foundry and Panoptic Mirror. With my first thought being Shrapnel Blast for Scepter, I figured there was a need for fuel, and so my suggestions followed that.

Re: Magic the Gathering XI: When this thread has 50 or more pages, transform it.
Only three of those spells fit onto Isochron. Feedback Bolt has a CMC of 5, which last I checked, doesn't fit onto the stick (CMC 2 or less). Further, Shrapnel Blast on Isochron is of only debatable use. It is a very swingy kinda deal. Yes, it ends things rapidly, but if it fails, it's spectacular. I don't disagree that Blast could find a home in a Isochron deck, but I personally wouldn't put it ON the stick. YMMV, obviously.
As for the other related sticks, I somehow doubt that Extinguisher's point was to have as many sticks as possible, given his presentation of the deck so far (tutors and eight scepters). Though, you are right, those are sticks of a kind, but all worthy of their own decks (and quite so at that).
I do like the idea of Flayer Husk though, a tutorable guy who can support Scepter.

Phyrexian Metamorph is the one you missed, being an upgraded version of Sculpting Steel.

Re: Magic the Gathering XI: When this thread has 50 or more pages, transform it.
Yeah, I meant only an isochron scepter deck. Other sticks are nice, but they aren't The Stick. I think I have some ideas, but how many scepters should I run? Obviously at least 8 (the original and the metamorph) but should I run any extra?
Also, mystical tutor seems good in this deck.Last edited by The Extinguisher; 2011-09-07 at 11:00 AM.

With a heavy enough 2 CMC deck you could get good use out of Muddle the Mixture.

Orm's chant is an awesome one, though it has been mentioned. I also like counterspell, but that's just because I am an ***. If you hate creatures you may want to try something like Terminate or the aforementioned lightening helix, which also can burn the opponent.
Also, as far as EDH goes, this is what I'm running right now...it's pretty darn mean and fairly powerful....though it's extremely creature lite and likes to spend the early-mid game sitting around and not being a threat.

Yeah, it's just a basic Grixis control deck using dragons as it's finishers. it includes a healthy amount of removal, counters and draw/tutor effects to keep things under your control until you can play out your dragons. I know it runs very few creatures but it hardly needs them between all your board wipes, counter and kill you should be able to hold off in the early game fine if you remain passive and don't make yourself a threat. Save cruelty and evil tactics for when you can pull them safely and have enough resources to do so.Last edited by Maho-Tsukai; 2011-09-07 at 12:10 PM.

Re: Magic the Gathering XI: When this thread has 50 or more pages, transform it.
IF you're gonna run Scepter, you could Scepter Chant and play Silence, Orim's Chant, and Abeyance, or you could run Scepter Arcana and run awesome arcane spells like Glacial Ray, Dampen Thought, Consuming Vortex, Candle's Glow, Ethereal Haze, Soulless Revival (less so) and other cards and abuse Splice to the fullest. There are other options, like Lightning Helix and Raise the Alarm, but these two are pretty hilarious.
You could also run Brain Freeze for an even faster mill clock.
Edit: Unless anyone objects, I will be removing decks from the deck registry. I will save them into Word Documents, so I'll still have them, but they won't be on display. If anyone would like their deck to remain in the registry, please let me know. If you would like to add decks, please make sure they have all the cards linked, and a title of some kind.

Re: Magic the Gathering XI: When this thread has 50 or more pages, transform it.
Magic Celebration this weekend on my home country. Theoretically, you show up at a FLGS, get 15 free lands (3 of each color :S), a free pack, mix them together then you play. If you win you move to the "next round", get another pack, mix it in (not sure if deck size goes up or not, because you play again with the losers that didnt get a new pack), and so on for 4 rounds (so you end up with 60 cards and 15 lands.
Is this a real thing or a scam that I cant see the point of or a desperate grab for players by my FLGS? Just seems a tad... generous of them to give out so many packs, also the play format makes no sense (30 cards decks vs 45 / 60 cards decks) and seems abusable somehow.
Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Magic the Gathering XI: When this thread has 50 or more pages, transform it.
Yeah, it's real. It's a sinister ploy by Wizards to attract players by giving away free packs. Shame on them.
The format is fun, though 100% dependant on luck. It's even more fun if you and your opponents agree to not see what's in the pack, so that what you draw will be a complete surprise. It makes for some tense moments, waiting to draw your rare. Many thanks to Assassin 89 for this avatar!

Re: Magic the Gathering XI: When this thread has 50 or more pages, transform it.
If you're not going to combo out for the win, you need more removal and/or counterspells. Considering its a blue, white, black deck you have access to all of the best counterspells AND removal out there. Staples like Swords to the Plowshares, Path to Exile, any of the numerous Wrath effects should be included in here. A couple of extra counterspells like Hinder and Spell crumple should be included if for nothing else than opponent's generals.
There are some seriously sub-par cards in there (Glasses of Urza I'm looking at you). You're missing things like Thopter Foundary/Sword of the Meek (1 mana for 1 life and a 1/1 is good). If you don't mind infinite combos Time Sieve combos well with the above (5 mana for 5 life and an extra turn). Time Sieve also works well with Thopter Assembly. For infinite combos there's also the obvious Sculpting Steel/Phyrexian Metamorph combo with Sharuum himself and then some way to use the constantly entering/exiting creatures to win with.
Some other good synergistic cards would be Master Transmuter, Arcuum Dagson, Mindslaver, Karn (non-planeswalker), Mycosynth lattice (works well with Karn to kill lands), Nevinyrral's Disk and Darksteel forge. Some better tutors would be good such as Enlightened and Demonic. Fabricate works well with all the artifacts you have as well. You're missing academy ruins which is probably the best land available in this type of deck, in addition to the almost mandatory Wasteland and Strip Mine.

Don't bother.
The game is an unrecoverable piece of crap. There are no redeeming qualities to it. None what so ever.
It looks like crap and plays like a bad Final Fantasy Tactics clone with shoehorned card mechanics. It's just boring. Don't bother.

Re: Magic the Gathering XI: When this thread has 50 or more pages, transform it.
It also has a tendency to crash computers. Or so I've heard.
SpoilerI can imagine mass amounts of hilarity when someone dies because the opponent had the Shock for their Laboratory Maniac. Man, that would be so damn hilarious.
But seriously, think about how awesome that would be:
"Visions from Beyond."
"How many cards do you have in your library?"
"Two."
"Shock your Laboratory Maniac."
"On to the next game, then?"
Sell-mill is interesting, but it's not yet good. Only the Skaab is a good enough reason to play a deck that self-mills instead of, you know, plays creatures that are good and efficient and just kills them. The Phantasm is good because it's good on its own, not because it mills your deck. I mean, you spend 2 mana to invalidate any removal played targeting it. That's pretty powerful.

Re: Magic the Gathering XI: When this thread has 50 or more pages, transform it.
Spoiler1) Extended is not a format anymore. No one cares about it anymore. Discussing it is a waste of time. Also, no self-mill deck can possibly beat Caw-Blade, so I don't know why we continue to discuss it.
2) The cards that Self-Mill would have used have all rotated out of Standard except the cards in Innistrad. The only cards that remain are Visions from Beyond and Jace. Jace is just an enabler for such a strategy. A card like Skaab Ruinator is a real reason to play self-mill, because it provides a solid, powerful benefit for doing so. Visions from Beyond also fits, however it still does not a deck make because playing Visions from Beyond is not a win condition. Unless you control Laboratory Maniac, which is a reason to play self-mill. I think it's a bad reason to play self-mill, as so far all the cards we've seen that would like you to play Self-Mill aren't trying to do what the Maniac is trying to do and would be equally effective at just milling your opponent to death.

Re: Magic the Gathering XI: When this thread has 50 or more pages, transform it.
Standard isn't the only format people care about. Many players, especially ones who just play among their friends, play with pretty much any cards they have. In addition, a deck doesn't have to be tournament-worthy to be worth discussing. Different people play the game different ways, ya know.

Re: Magic the Gathering XI: When this thread has 50 or more pages, transform it.
But we are discussing it in the context of competitive events. When you start discussing it in terms of "Extended," you are talking about competitive events unless you specify that you play Extended with your friends. Because honestly, it's safe to assume you aren't playing Extended for fun because people didn't play Extended even when it's a PTQ format that could bring them success and money.
If you mean for fun, then yeah, I agree, you can do it if you want. You can do pretty much anything for fun.

Re: Magic the Gathering XI: When this thread has 50 or more pages, transform it.
I'm a big fan of the "Rareless and Careless" standard legal deck that was posted on the daily mtg a while back (it's a r/u standard legal deck with no rares or mythics). With a good chunk of the deck sadly rotating in a month I've been working on a personal updated version, keeping to the same 'no rares, cheap and fast spells' theme. Looking for advice, contains some innunstrad, so spoiler alert.
Spoiler
Lands:
10 Mountain
10 Island
Terramorphic is sadly rotating, and I don't know of any non-rare lands that would be worth playing. Might end up breaking the no rares rule if I can get my hands on the new r/u land.
Creatures:
4 Neurok Commando
4 Invisible Stalker
I aim to make my opponent's targetted kill spells dead draws. Stalker and the curse are good together, and commando can do some awesome things.
Spells:
4 Arc Trail
4 Curse of Stalked Prey
4 Gitaxian Probe
4 Incinerate
4 Mana Leak
4 Ponder
4 Silent Departure
2 Shrine of Burning Rage
2 Volt Charge
Trying to keep a similar level of burn, even though the great burn spells (forked and bolt) are rotating. Charge does double duty, buffing creatures with +1/+1s and increasing shrine's charge.
Suggestions? Comments? Criticisms? This is obviously a first draft, will probably change some when the full inninstrad list is up. Thanks.
