    Default Proxy War[Eclipse Phase] IC

    OOC Thread
    Dice Rolling Thread
    TacNet Text Feed

    TO: REDACTED
    FROM: PROXY THESEUS
    SENT: 4:39 March 4th, 10 A.F.

At 23:19:39, March 3rd 10 A.F., Olympus time an explosion occurred at a hotel where PROXY AEGIS was residing, destroying his morph. At 23:18:17 his backups were deleted from a secure Firewall server. We need you to investigate this occurrence. It appears that some of our internal security has been compromised so you will NOT have backup on this mission and Firewall will NOT cover for you if you become compromised. Your job is to find out who or what had PROXY AEGIS killed and if possible recover his stack. If the person or persons responsible for this are Firewall, your job is to eliminate them permanently. If not your job is to eliminate them permanently and find out how they broke into a secure Firewall server and how they found out about a Firewall Proxy.

    Players:
    Acatalepsy as Olsen Doni
Akotor as Liu Wei of Many Faces
    Dazhbug as Jebediah Corbin
    Idrail as Maximillion Swift
    kind_of_a_ROBOT as Baltazar Kreuger
    Lord Raziere as Villiar Sirinian
    OracleofSilence as Liam Bennet
    Tome as Hartman
    Yuki Akuma as Jenna Marson

    Current Situation:

You are here to investigate a hotel that PROXY AEGIS was residing in. It is located in Olympus, Mars.

After sending the message from the briefing you all also receive three other files. One is a comm code for PROXY THESEUS who is willing to answer any questions he/she/it can. The second is the access log file for the Firewall Server that held PROXY AEGIS containing everything that has happened on and too that server in the last week. The third is the location of the hotel, located in an upscale part of Olympus.

Olsen Doni feels the Maglev begin to decelerate, threatening to spill his cup of coffee. At least they weren't on an incline anymore. [[Sensor, let's take a look at the news feed - both the local chatter and the statements from OIA.]]

Stepping off the train, he sends a message to THESEUS <<This is DAMOCLES. Who do we have in on this, and do we have a network up?>>

    News:
The OIA hasn't released a statement yet but there's been a scattering of chatter that suggests they're sending people to investigate.

    And on the local news:

“ We're live on the scene at The Golden Throne, an expensive and exclusive hotel that caters to only the richest of clientele. We're not sure what exactly happened but we've heard reports of an explosion from one of its upper floors. We haven't heard from local law enforcement and we're working to get a crew to the scene as we speak.”

“ Clearly this is the work of anarchists bent on killing anyone who has any amount of opulence.”

“ It's a corporate power play. Take out a prestigious figure to discredit a rival. Its clearly the only realistic answer.”

“ It's a TITAN attack! The TITAN's have returned! Repent for the end is nigh!”

While many even wilder theories are being spouted, no one seems to actually know anything more than an explosion probably occurred at The Golden Throne.

GM NOTE: If you want to looking for something specific in the news chatter that wouldn't show up as major news or look for patterns, that would be a skill check. Interfacing, Research, and Investigation could all let you sort through for something specific if you know what you are looking for and if you have an Academic, Interest, or Profession skill that you think would work/do something roll it.

    PROXY THESEUS

“ We don't have anything set up but I can at least tell you who you will be working with. The other Sentinels, aside from yourself, that we could find nearby and available were Goldrush, Shadow Gemini, Smart Steel, Multiplex One, Kraken, Beid Catch, Swagman. I'm not sure if you've worked with any of them before but they are all fine operatives, if a little... unorthodox. I suppose that describes most Sentinels. If you find out anything contact me immediately and if you need anything just tell me and I will see what I can arrange.”

Villiar stepped off the Maglev train as well. Not really realizing that a fellow Sentinel was right beside him. He stretched, 13 hours of waiting to get to Olympus from New Shanghai, Boring.
    [[Boring eh?]]
[[No, I distinctly remember excessive mesh surfing and sims relieving much of that boredom, as well as your various conversations with me]]
    Nasavi replied
[[Whatever. Time to get down to business.]]
He contacted Theseus and got a similar list of Sentinel agent names.
[[Well this will make things problematic. I don't know how to find the others with secret names. Its not as if I can just call them out.]]
[[Get Creative then. Or just y'know, contact the Proxy...]]
Villiar decided to get creative. With a little alteration to his smart clothes, their appearance changed so that on the back of his jacket had the words
"SEAT OF MIDAS by S.G." appearing in stylized manner to make it look like corporate marketing. He then started walking forward to the Golden Throne. Anyone who would get the reference and solve what it meant would probably be a Firewall agent. Ok maybe it wasn't foolproof but it was unlikely that most people was going to see it as a code anyways.

Liam stood at the edge of the crowd around the Golden Throne, and for perhaps the hundredth time, cursed procedure.

<Thank you Solace, I know the list was only sent a few minutes ago, now can you finally download it?> This was ridiculous. Yeah, sure a Proxy had just been killed, but why were there no local cells available?

Scanning over the list as he eyes the crowd, Liam sighed and began focusing on individuals at random, waiting for... well, something.

"Screw it." He starts heading through the crowd, keeping his eyes open and trying not to get to bored, waiting for contact.

<<Swagman and Multiplex, at least.>> He grimmaced and mentally prepared himself for shouted random inanities from the former for the next few days, and more - complex - emotions regarding the latter. <<Either way, let's get a shared information space open so we can start building a case. Here. >> He - or more accurately his muse - passed on a link to a distributed mesh collaboration suite.

He'd likely have to go to the Golden Throne sooner rather than later - if nothing else, to get any evidence missed by the OIA. He tried to get a sense of the location, the structure of the building, and the surroundings from publicly accessible maps, photos, and spimes, and also looked into the pricing for a room there. <<I don't suppose that Firewall will be dipping into its piggy bank to get us accommodations, will it? Especially someplace like the Throne?>>

At the back of his mind, another line of thought ran parallel - if it was me, how would I bomb the place?

    { Profession: Terrorist to get a general overview of the tactics of doing a bombing like this, especially to assassinate an individual target. (((1d100)[45] vs 45 )) }

Jeb dropped down from the back of the cargo hauler, shouldering his pack and waving a wing with a grunt of thanks. Taillights flashing in acknowledgement, the hauler rumbled off in a cloud of dust, bound for the industrial sections of the city.

Snorting, Jeb leapt into the sky, taking a short flight to the roof of a nearby building. [[CRAB-PINCHING dust,]] he muttered internally, clearing his nostrils. [[Right then. Best get on. Shiner, getchyerself useful and ask the BARGAINING mysterious voice what's the MOLE-TUNNEL bizzo wit our mob? Wants to know who we're with.]] Jeb focused northward as his muse contacted Thesus, his eyes picking out the shape of their target in the distance. [[Meanwhile, let's get us a FORTHRIGHT look at things.]] The winged morph disappeared into the beige of the sky.

He was on his second pass around the hotel, skin rippling to match the Martian sky, when his HUD pinged him. Quorking in amusement, he kept an eye on his cartography suite as he connected. <<'Bout STICKING time yah dustkickers showed up! Anyone got a JIG-TUMBLING RUMPLEMINT what's the bizzo?>>

One of the few still buzzing around the bombed building, Hartman's gnat flitters about, recording the external damage from as many angles as it can access. Hopefully this will all turn out to have been some rich git's power play and she can feed him to the wolves.

An incoming message on a rarely used channel draws her attention. Firewall calls, eh? <<GOLDRUSH here>> she messages THESUS, <<Already on the scene, doing my thing. Mind patching me in on who else is on this one?>>.

She opens up another feed, scanning her competitors' reports. If something is up, maybe the first responder will have noticed it. That, or there might be someone putting an unusual amount of spin on things. Either one might be a clue. Survivors, witnesses, anyone else she can track down later would be good too. Maybe someone was lifelogging and managed to catch it? Best keep an eye out for lifeloggers who've gone dark, just in case, maybe expand that to anything else that went down at the same time.

She skims down the list of agents for this mission. SMART STEEL? What's that prat doing here on Mars? Irrelevant, she decides, at least he'll be useful. The rest of the names don't really ring a bell, but hopefully the haphazard assembly of Sentinels hasn't ended up with half a dozen combat specialists.

She notes the link from DAMOCLES and sets Sophia to copying her findings. As an afterthought she attaches the feed from her gnat. That's another one confirmed for having his head in the game. She pings him anyway. <<Might want to get someone to tighten the encryption there DAMOCLES.>>

One of her feeds pings her, drawing her attention again. Cute reference. <<SHADOW GEMINI, I take it that's you in the stylish jacket?>>

"Wha-" Jenna frowned a bit as the message pinged in the corner of her eye. Focusing on it, she gave a grunt of annoyance and stood up. "...Damnit. Uh... Gemma honey? You be good, mommy needs to go out for a bit," she called to the other end of the apartment, while uploading a fork of herself - number 2, stored in her ecto - to the apartment's computer network.

The ride from News Jamestown to Olympus didn't take long. Once she got off the maglev, she pinged the rest of the Firewall team. <<MULTIPLEX 1, 3 and 4 here. No idea what you guys are playing at calling me here, but whatever. What's the sitch?>>

It had been a hard day, a mix of boring number crunching followed by bursts of frenzied activity as some of the larger physical equipment arrived, but what can you do working freelance means you have to go were the work is, at least now i can get of this hideous planet and get ho"MAXIMILLION!" this could only be bad, Reinhardt new better than to bother me when i was ready to head on home "What is it Doctor?" "a message has come through from our....friends" like i said, this could only be bad.

The Golden Throne hadn't been that far away, even closer when you can cut trough the synth only service tunnel's, cramped and dirty as they are. "Alright lets work", lets see who we have here...BEID CATCH? that's Mr Bennet as i recall, fascinating papers of the factors, "hmmm don't know him, them either...wait..no..cant be..." a name stood out, a name that honestly made him consider testing the "you can't quit Firewall" rule. Heartman, the vile hag that had made a spirited attempt at ruining his livelihood, and then had the gall to use his place of residence as a safehouse! ugh she was good though, no not just good, great "which should mean we can get this done quick so i can get back to never seeing her again". anyway's back to work, lets see...ah Sentinel Damocles has already set up a mesh space, "Reinhardt post my TacNet Information, the sooner we all group up the sooner we get it done". in the meantime lets see if i can find a service entrance, see if i we cant get in that way. I'm also going to use my mental speed to see Research as much as can about Proxy Aegis.

Perception for finding the service entrance (1d100)[27] < 80
And research for finding out about Aegis (1d100)[7] < 60

I'd ask SMART STEEL to take a look but I can't stand the git. Might want to propose we all get together in simulspace and do the intros.>>

Baltazar felt the slight vertigo as the magnetic brakes decelerated the elevator towards its final destination at the center of Olympus. He stared out the window, toward the dirty warrens at the edge of the city and out beyond that, he thought he could just barely see the light glare of Elysium.

[a message has arrived from a Proxy Theseus] Nemo suddenly squeaked. Baltazar sighed and checked the encryption protocols. The message opened and he sighed again as he read it. <<Well, there goes a lovely vacation>> he replied to his muse. Nemo, as usual, had no reply for his sarcasm. He bookmarked the shared mesh-space and added a quick-link in his entropics, then brought up a few news feeds, studying the aftermath of the explosion as the elevator finally came to a stop at its station.

He pinged the usual contacts and was met just outside the arrival gate by a security guard who let him through a side gate and waved him out the front door. He stopped to adjust the awkward fitting breather he always had to wear on Mars, and started making his way toward the Golden Throne.

There is not enough information to guess too much about the bomb. What you do know is that hotels like the Golden Throne are trivial to infiltrate as either staff or guests if you have any amount of gear, skill, and prep time. Planting the bomb in AEGIS's room would be a little harder, but if the bomb is big enough an adjacent room would be enough. Whoever planted the bomb is probably gone, but they probably detonated it remotely, as doing it by proximity in a hotel is a little risky, which means they probably had an observation post in the Golden Throne or a nearby building.

    Spoiler: Hartman
    Show

    News:
Searching through the news feeds you get a better picture of what happened. About 5 hours ago a room in the Golden Throne exploded. This room was on an upper floor and had a magnificent view of the Space Elevator. The exploison came from inside the room, and only one person was killed, an unidentified Exalt.

    Investigation by Remote at Scene:
It's impossible to get too close to the scene, as the OIA have blocked off access to the room and moved in a dozen men to investigate and secure the crime scene. Aside from the OIA a large crowd has begun to form around the hotel, consisting mostly of people from various news agencies and there gear. More are arriving by the minute and the OIA are strugling to keep them back. The OIA keep saying that they are investigating the situation and will release a statement when they know more, but right now they need everyone to stay back.

    Spoiler: Maximillian
    Show

You spot two service entrances to the Golden Throne, one for Synths and one for Biomorphs. They are being guarded by a single OIA security bot, which looks to be a standard Synth morph.

PROXY AEGIS is known for hiding Firewall resources in places where no one would think to look for them, and creating elaborate deathtraps to protect them. Nothing is known about his/her/its non-Firewall life and Sentinels rarely if ever interact with AEGIS directly.

    Spoiler: Baltazar

    It was an exploison!

The news is talking about the exploison!

GM: Everyone at the Golden Throne or who has eyes on it, make a Perception check.

    Spoiler: Made the check
    Show

You notice in the distance the telltale sign of a large OIA task force approaching the hotel. You can't make out many details from this distance but you can easily estimate it to contain at least 40 morphs. You also notice that aside from the news and police, the street and nearby buildings are oddly quiet and empty.

    Spoiler: MoS 30+
    Show

You notice several groups of people that don't seem to be with either the OIA or media. Several of the groups are watching the incoming task force, while the rest seem to be watching the entrances to the Golden Throne and the crowd. You can't get an exact count of the number of groups, but it is at least a dozen, with each group consisting of 4-5 morphs.

    Spoiler: Critical Success
    Show

    See MoS 30+ as well.

You notice that several of the groups are carrying large packages and you catch a glimpse of what can only be a Shredder on one of them.

single bot hmmm, i'd just need to get my hand on a member of staff's ID code to get by it but....i don't like the look at what's going on down the street...could they have shutdown the surrounding building's already? damn....no ones signed into TacNet yet, time to take a risk. "Reinhardt, send a message to all the mesh I.D's of the rest of the team..and lift the block on Heartman's, alright message goes, Hey guys didn't know you were in town! you seen the new's about the bomb at the golden throne? crazy stuff, anyways we should meet up sometime, how about that similspace Damocles took us too that one time? anyways i gotta run, hope to see you their soon!" good....if there checking mesh traffic that shouldn't give anything away, now to see if i can find one of their synth workers I'D code's, odds are the OIA will have the hotel's mesh on lockdown....but maybe i can waylay one of their night staff on their way in? ugh could really use an eye in the sky here....

im also going to check the security of our Mesh site out, see if there's anything i can do to improve it without locking the rest of the team out.

Hartman feels a twinge of annoyance as the message arrives. <<Hello Max. So lovely to see you again. I don't suppose you ever did get around to picking up that encryption software I recommended?>>

Spotting the incoming OIA investigators through her Gnat, Hartman pings the rest of the sentinel team over the Eye. No telling what the rest of them might be trying already. <<Heads up, big ol' OIA gangbang headed for the hotel - too damn late as always. Like forty or so of them. If you're around already and you ain't got a reasonable excuse to be loitering, best not be letting yourself be seen.>>

<<There's some other freaks too, watching the doors. Not sure who but they're arousing my suspicions all over the place. Gonna try to run facial recognition on them, see if somebody was stupid enough to turn up in a known morph or if they're just bystanders being sensible and staying away from the pigs.>>

She shifts her focus back to the Gnat's feed and performs a minute adjustment to the flight path. No need to be too blatant with a 360 degree field of view. A quick command brings her facial recognition suite online. Time to run some checks.

    Spoiler
    Show
Hartman will use the Gnat's 360 degree vision to try and got a look at some faces without looking suspicious. She'll then run them through her facial recognition software, see if she can ID any of the morphs.

Do I need a skill test for any of that?

i will then proceed to back away from the service entrance, probably to wherever the main pedestrian walkway is, so i can keep an eye out for the hotel's Synth Workers.

Jeb snorts as he catches a glimpse of the OIA forces moving in, as well as the other loitering groups. [[Looks like we're in for some FAULTY SHUTTLE-DOCKING. Time to find a perch.]]

Swooping to the roof of a nearby building that affords him the best view, Jeb pulls his chameleon cloak over himself and brings up the feed to the shared meetspace. <<Hey there CLOCK-PUNCHERS, this is yer second eye in the sky confirmin' that some OIA PICKLES are inbound, and some shifty WOODCUTTERS look like they want trouble. All the other RUM PUNCHES have cleared out, so I'm lying low. View's nice up here; since you ground-apes can't see for SOCKS, here yah are.>>

Jeb links in his cartography suite, sending over a detailed top down map of the Golden Throne and surrounding blocks that grows into a 3-d view of the city grid. Any internal schematics that his T-Ray emitter (now shut off) could see are also generated, and he lets the image update as he drops in locations of the OIA and various groups of beings, and starts calculating sight-lines from various nearby rooftops and balconies.

Jenna had been walking in the direction of the nearest place to rent a vehicle to drive out to the hotel. Or at least a vac suit so she could walk there.

Of course, the news that the OIA are closing in on the scene causes her to immediately switch routes to head to a bar, pretending as if she'd been going there all along. <<Hokay. I'm gonna go... do something. Until we figure out what we're gonna be doing here. I'm not breaking-and-entering expert, you know.>>

Liam swears violently as he notices the OIS force moving in <<And of course now they choose to arrive. Why couldn't they be good little guard dogs and arrive after we were done.>>

As Jeb's message comes in, he winces briefly and continues. <<I suppose it would be to much to ask... you know what? nevermind. Can you see any other watchers?>> Liam casually heads over to Maxamillion, nodding as he approaches "Any approaches?"

<<You got something to say, might as well SHUFFLE YOUR PIGS and say it.>> Jeb kept on eyeing various nooks and crannies in the surrounding buildings. <<So far as approaches...>> Several routes lit up on the map; approaches to the hotel marked in green, escape vectors in yellow, and the group of OIA personnel denoted in red as they approached the hotel. <<...depends on where you're trying to get to. We got a plan here, or we just winging things?>> The corvid chuckled quietly to himself as he continued to keep watch.

The media faces get quickly recognized by the software but no one that is associated with criminal or violent elements. The software doesn't recognize many of the morphs used by the non-media, OIA members which means they are either new or never been near a camera. The few morphs it does recognize are Rusters and Synths that were last seen out on the Martian Plains a few days ago.

Aside from the blown out hotel room that is currently being swarmed with OIA officers, you notice three things that are a little out of place on the upper levels of the residential buildings around the Golden Throne. Most apartments/rooms are either empty or have their windows tinted to black. One of the rooms has two Morphs(both synthmorphs) in it, one which appears to be examining the nearby area and the other of which is trying to hide a sniper rifle from view, but you are able to catch a glimpse of it. This room is away from the gathering crowd toward the direction that the incoming OIA task force is coming from. Closer to the crowd is a biomorph, who is inside another apartment, but is scanning the crown quite intently. The final thing off is a female Splicer Morph in a room across from the exploded hotel room who seems to be examining the OIA officers intently.

GM NOTE: 10 minutes of in-game time until the OIA task force arrives. I would also like to point out the pile of Firewall server access logs you were sent.

<<Three CLUNKERS.>> Jeb highlights three locations on the map in the meetspace, supplementing it with brief looping clips of vid taken from his own vision. <<Two TIN-EATERS[1] by the goonsquad, up high; one's got a long-pipe[2], watcher heads dearies. Got a fleshie over yer heads down there, seems to be scoping the FRUITPICKERS in the street, and then a sheila in a hume-two[3] right cross the way from the crater, she's watchin' the goons real close-like.>>

Slowly and carefully, Jeb ducks under the cover of his cloak and reaches for his pack. Thirty seconds later he lays a fully assembled sniper rifle on the roof beside him within easy reach.

(i'm gonna assume by now that were all on TacNet, so we have safe com lines, and we have video of what our teammates are seeing, also the roll's for the called perception check are in OOC and Dice section's)

"Any Approaches?", "ah Mr Bennet, pleasure to see you, we have to talk about those papers you wrote about the factors, after this unsavoury business is done with of course, but as for entrances, there's two service entrances one for synth's and one for Biomorphs, because nothing say's segregation like separate entrances, ugh nonetheless i have a plan to get inside, i just need to convince one of the workers to part with their worker's ID code" as i say this ill Tag the entrances on Jeb's map and send a brief summary of my plan to get into the building. and then in a message to everyone "I'm confidant i can get into the building, however i'm all ears for any idea's on how to clear that room so i can get access

<<Ok, better idea: I will eye-hack them, then make my smart clothes look like theirs. then I can pretty much walk around getting the info without them seeing me.>>
Eye-hacking a certain term for hacking someone's mesh space, then changing their filters. Since you can filter out entire people with your AR if you want, its no big leap to hack into someone else's mesh and change their filter so that you would be invisible to them. Normally however, this would only work on one person.

However, since these people are united forces that need to work together, and the use of separate mesh spaces have in the past caused disagreements and trouble in the past between members of units- things like people having different layers on so that they would disagree over the descriptions of things, or listening to personal music that drowns out orders, regulations are strict about everyone being in the same meshspace so that everyone is seeing and hearing what everyone else is, thus keeping squad unity.

Thus, providing a weakness, since they are all one mesh space, you only need to hack that and change its filter, and suddenly all 40 of them wouldn't be able to see, hear, or even smell him. united in perception, for better or worse. He would just have to keep out of their reach so that they don't touch him. To outside observers his smart clothes changed to look like one of their uniforms.

    @Maximillion:

" Hmm...", the worker looks at you oddly, not believing for a second that you are a journalist, before responding, " Sure, didn't plan on being around here anyways and I could use the credits." The worker waits for you to send the credits before giving the code, and then quickly walks off.

GM: Make an Infosec or relevant Knowledge skill roll to see if the worker gave your the right code.
