The Sin of Pride - Deathwatch
The Sin of Pride Deathwatch
The vaulted hall of the Temple Shrine where the Deathwatch are staying is lit with the flames of a dozen lanterns burning in ornate holders. The vaulted ceiling lost in a haze of ceremonial incense. The walls, adorned with heradly and imagery of the birth of the Imperium also bear witness to towering 12ft statues of in white alablaster of its greatest saints. Wooden pews with soft velvet coverlets all facing the 30m tall Aquilla that domaintes the head of the chapel, a massive stained glass frieze behind it depucting the God Emperor casting down the great betrayer.
Currently the chapel lies in ruins. Spent bolt casings litter the floor, ornate rune and scripture covered pillars torn and cracked from impacts, the wooden pews burning from las blasts and smoke mingling with the burning incense. Bodies of raggedly garbed humans litter the entranceway tumbled over the black stone steps and the massive arched doorway. Standing like they statues that they venerate the 6 marines of the Deathwatch stand still watching the dead without remorse, without emotion, without thought. Under the unblinking gaze of the marines a dozen of the most junior clerics set about dragging out the dead and sweeping the spent and still smoking bolt shells off the floor. Other servants, menial labour mop the blood off the doorway and the sacred statues...
As Commander Korvin enters the blood splattered chapel- clearly the enemy boarding crew had gone the wrong way - the marines stand to attention, their 8ft armoured frames looming over the Lady Captain waiting for her to speak....

4 Things to do:
1. Get your mission. Either through Korvin or the sample I posted in the OOC
2. Choose your team leader
3. Make your oath
4. Requistion your equipment

Re: The Sin of Pride - Deathwatch
Commander Anarette Korvin
Being in the presence of the Battle Brothers of the Deathwatch unsettled Anarette slightly; whereas the Imperial military machine functioned on strict adherence to a chain of command, the small contingent of Space Marines did not have an assigned leader, and ceded primacy to one another as often as they desired. So it was difficult to know the proper protocol. She improvises, making a bow towards them and sweeping her gaze around to indicate that it is directed at all of them.
"Warriors of the Deathwatch," she begins. "Approximately eighty-four minutes ago the Sin of Pride were attacked by two vessels. The first has been taken out of the fight and we are approaching the second and expect to be in range to commence boarding operations in... twenty four minutes," she says, checking her chrono.
"The target is a Goliath-class terraforming vessel, named The Eternal Profit," she continues, handing over a dataslate containing the exterior ship showing the strange glyphs covering its hull as well as the result of the auger scans. "I expect that the ship's armsmen would prove competent enough to take the ship," she says honestly. "But we would be honored to have you fight alongside the ship's company, and your aid could prove instrumental in taking the ship quickly enough to secure valuable intelligence - the ship did not respond to vox transmissions and we have have no knowledge of the reason for their attack." She taps a key on the 'slate, several vectors appearing. "The ship's company will be mounting a conventional operation, pressing towards the bridge, enginarium, and life support. While the primary objective is the capture of disabling of the vessel, I also hope to be able to take the launch bays to prevent any escapes in small vessels - there is a nebula close by which would provide cover for any lesser lighters of guncutters - as well as to prevent any further attacks from that quarter. Beyond that, the Inquisitor and I would be grateful for any intelligence you can provide - from the central cogitator stacks of the ship, senior officers, or any other source. I leave it to you where you feel you would best fit in the order of battle," she finishes, awaiting any questions or other statements before she returns to the bridge to manage the boarding attempt on the enemy vessel.
SpoilerPrimary Objective: Secure or Disable the Goliath
Secondary Objective: Disable the launch bays to prevent escapes/further attacks
Secondary Objective: Download or recover the ship's logs
Tertiary Objective: Capture the ship's senior officers
Tertiary Objective: Disable communications quickly to prevent fate of Goliath from reaching its masters
Tertiary Objective: Discover origins/allegiance of ship
I'd guess that 50 Requisition is a good, round number to use. Slightly lower than the number of tertiary objectives would warrant by the book, but I'm figuring that we won't go after (or be able to go after) all of them.Last edited by Intro; 2011-09-08 at 08:10 PM.

Re: The Sin of Pride - Deathwatch
Conall gazed upon the infidels who had transgressed against the Emperor of Man by befouling his Chapel. Leaning down, he pulled one close, looking for some sign of who they were, or why they would attack. He had heard the warning klaxons earlier, noticed the shifting of the Sin of Pride as it manuevered, felt the slight shudder of weapons being released. Of course, it meant little to the Deathwatch ... that fight was for the humans above.
But now, their foes had brought the fight to the Marines, and the first few had paid the price. Standing, he looked at his brothers, wondering what foul misfortune brought their attack here ... or madness.
The door opened and the ship's Captain entered. Conall stood with his brothers, waiting for her to speak. Listening to her request, it was obvious she was 'throwing them a bone' as some would say. Of course, she was correct - the Deathwatch would be the best unit to accomplish the objectives she had laid out.
He gave a curt nod of agreement to Makradon's comment, but he remained silent. She knew little of what they faced, had laid out all the intelligence she had available, and seemed more interested in returning to her duties on the bridge rather than here.
Any questions he had would either be answered aboard the enemy vessel ... or would be a moot point, since he'd be dead.Life is ... life. As always bot/cut as necessary.

Re: The Sin of Pride - Deathwatch
As Kol stared down at the dead raider, his massive armoured frame making the body look like a stringless puppet at his feet he recognised some of the runes on the dead creature's las weapons and the runes on some of the swords and belts clutched in the invaders hand. A memory of reports from the Thulian Explorator Vessel Omissah's Pride about an abandoned world orbiting a dead Halo Star. Huge vaulted underground vaults filled with deadly defences and rumours of Xeno artifacts...

Re: The Sin of Pride - Deathwatch
Wolf Scout Ivar
Ivar barely spares the Lady Captain a glance and a nod as she addresses them. Instead, he continues to search the bodies, looking for anything they might have been carrying that would reveal their allegiance. Tattoos of the symbols of the dark gods would mean Daemons and possible Traitor Astartes, while the mutations of Genestealer Hybrids would mean a Tyranid threat. Even a familiar scent might reveal something he could use to identify the enemy. A thousand different foes could be responsible, each of which would require a subtly different, but equally lethal, response.
He notices the captain handing the dataslate to Kol out of the corner of his eye. Might be worth taking a look myself, he notes.
"Ah'm with Brother Makradon" he rumbles, "ah'm feelin' a wee bit stiff after being stuck on this ship fer so long. Hunting down some heretics sounds like a good way ta' stretch me legs 'afore we get ta' tha real work".

" 'While obscene heretic's hearts still beat, there can be no respite.' " Naaman quotes, his oath of silence preventing him from saying more in the presence of one who not of the Adeptus Astartes or an Inquisitor. Not that he says much regardless. It will be good to be hunting the enemies of the Imperium again.

Re: The Sin of Pride - Deathwatch
Commander Anarette Korvin
With no questions forthcoming, the captain gives the Space Marines a quick nod and says, "Go in the Emperor's sight. Good hunting," before turning to make her way back to the bridge, her mind already turning over the myriad possibilities for the way the battle might unfold and the tasks before her.
Lexicanium Kol, Flesh Tearers
"No ordinary heretics," Kol growls once the captain has left. He nudges the rune-scribed sword of one of their attackers with the ceramite tip of one boot. "These symbols are like unto those of a long-dead xenos civilization whose remnants are yet found in the Halo. Perhaps this time the 'real work' has had the singular courtesy to come to us."Last edited by Intro; 2011-09-09 at 10:32 AM.

Re: The Sin of Pride - Deathwatch
As ancient panels and hidden recesses open up to the Marines' commands revealing a veritable armoury they can all feel the ship accelerating and turning and feel the shudder as the main battery and defensive turrets begin their deadly fire upon the Goliath.
All Hands. Praise be to the Emperor. Brace for Impact. Boarding parties stand-by at boarding collars..., the words echoing through the ancient shrine and a timid confessor pointing to the nearest boarding collar that is slowly powering up ready to snake across the 200m between the hulls to deliver its deadly cargo. The corridor outside the shrine is lined with some 200 ship board enforcers clutching assault shields, shotguns, boarding axes and assault carbines. All standing silent and humbled in the presence of the fable Angels of Death...

Re: The Sin of Pride - Deathwatch
Conall waited, still as stone, for the boarding collar to lock. While most avoided making eye contact with the Adeptus Astartes, those few brave souls that chanced a glance made an effort to look anywhere but in his direction. Perhaps it was his grim visage. Perhaps it was the nasty looking scar down the side of his face. Perhaps it was his pockmarked blue and white armor, covered in the scars of a thousand battles. Perhaps it was the huge two handed sword that lay across his back, it's blade as long as most men stood.
Conall didn't care. He had pushed aside the distractions of here and now and was focused on the mission ahead. By mission's end, the Goliath would be theirs, as sure as an Ork was ugly. How much intelligence they collected would be depenedent on how long the scum had to destroy the data.
Flexing his fists slightly, he looked over at Kol. It was up to the Librarian to set the tempo for their boarding, to lead them into the breach for glory and acclaim. It was his decision to burst onto their foes, in lightning attacks, or to steadily advance, while eradicating all opposition.
In typical fashion that his brothers had become used to, Conall summed it up in one question: "Haste?"Life is ... life. As always bot/cut as necessary.

Re: The Sin of Pride - Deathwatch
Lexicanium Kol, Flesh Tearers
Kol stalks forward at the front of the squad, intent on being the first to cross over into the enemy vessel. "If you feel up to it," he replies off-handedly to the other Deathwatch Marine, with enough of a question in the phrase to make it an insult. He smirks slightly, though whether he is in actual doubt of his companions abilities or his statement has some other purpose is not immediately clear.

Re: The Sin of Pride - Deathwatch
To an outsider, the Storm Warden's face didn't change. But to Kol's hyper-sensitive senses, the tightening of Conall's jaws was as loud as crackling bones. While these subtle barbs were not uncommon from the Librarian, their frequency did not ease their affront. He considered drawing the huge blade on his back, but knew that would only amuse the Bloodtearer more. Instead, simply answered in his customary manner.

Naaman views the discourse of the other space marines dispassionately , his only response to the question is readying his heavy bolter, the sound of him chambering the first round resounding in the transport.

Re: The Sin of Pride - Deathwatch
With a sound like a thousand thunders 40 million tonnes of steel and ceramite come together and the sound of thousands of defence lasers and flak turrets firing at point blank range drowns out most other noise. The long boarding cable shoots forward on it retro-thrusters, the trio of green lights glowing on the walls of it indicating the hard lock on the enemy vessel. A hissing sound as the las-burners fired and thick acrid smoke rolled back down the tube. A faint boom announced the frag charges firing off to clear the immediate vicinity of the corridor and the massive airlock opened clearing the way for the Kill Team...
Inside the Goliath there was carnage, about a dozen bodies lay nearby torn to shreds by the frag charges or burned beyond recognition by the las cutters capable of cutting through a ships hull. Smoke and debris litter the mesh steel floor as the corridor stretch out some 20m left and right conforming to the slight curve of the ship's hull before arriving at large circular doorways. Pipes and conduits and glowing cogitator banks at intervals down the corridor. You estimate that you're probably somewhere near the prow in the mid-decks so likely above the launch bays and below the main sensor arrays.
A sudden clattering sound, loud to your enhanced ears announces the arrival of fast response teams. From the prow and sternward ends of the corridors each a group of 5 men, heavy carapace armour covering bodies and faces, large hellguns clutched in fists and efficient well trained movement as the circular doors spin retracting into the wall and the men take cover in the doorframes hellgun magazines glowing on overcharge

Well done, you're about to board the ship.

Lexicanium Kol, Flesh Tearers
Kol grins and pivots towards the nearest group of armoured men, then frowns as they huddle into the cover of the doorframe - a reasonable tactic, no doubt, but still unlikely to provide much sport for his force sword. And so he raises left hand and a an ominous feeling fills the air before a torrent of warpfire streams out of his fingers, washing over the small squad...

Wolf Scout Ivar, Space Wolves
There is a time for subtlety in any battle. That is the time with which Ivar is most familiar with. The time for stealth, the time to hunt, the time for trickery and deception. This is not that time. But Ivar is still one of the Emperor's Astartes. Battle is in his blood.
Heavy Bolter already in hand, he turns to meet his foes, camo-cloak whirling as he does, casting strange patterns in the air behind him. Grim-faced and focused in battle, his weapon roars as he lays down a storm of covering fire for his battle brothers.
SpoilerFull-Action: Suppressive Fire on the doors
They have to make a Hard (-20) Pinning test and might get hit by the full-auto burst as well.

Makradon turned towards the left. "Feel the fury of the Emperor and his Astartes," his helmet speakers boomed. The echos of his voice were drowned put by the roar as he filled the corridor with burning promethium.

I'm pretty sure I can get them all in the burst, and they need AB > 5 to dodge (if I've got the geometry right.)
Also chance of catching fire etc.

Re: The Sin of Pride - Deathwatch
Burning promethium pours down the corridor engulfing and soaking the enemy in the liquid fire. They huddle in the doorway trying to avoid the jet of hellish fire. 2 of the lucky ones cowering in the doorway manage to avoid the worst of the promethium, the others are not so lucky, all 3 bursting into flames as one totters on the edge of death, a second takes horrendous damage leaving him burning and near death, the 3rd in a similar bad way shrieking as his armour and weapons were covered with hellish flaming liquid... the 3 burning figures were likley soon to die.
To the right the hallway explodes the shrill chatter of the heavy bolter the storm of rounds rippping chunks or steel and wiring out the walls with explosions of metal and crackling sparks. 4 of the heretics duck out the way, only 1 standing in the face of the onslaught, another narrowly didging a round as large as his fist...

From Deathwatch it seems that a straightforward Ag test dodges the flames? Why do I need AB5?

Edit:- While the rules for the dodging may be that. I was reading the flame description and it just says "agility test or hit". I think that that's in liue of the hit rolls.

SpoilerCan only dodge if you can get out of the area of effect by moving AB
I wasn't allowing for cover they could hide within, like a door alcove - otherwise they seem to have needed to jump back 5 m to reach the extent oft range. 3/5 is fine with me anyway.

As the clatter of the heavy bolters continued to echo in the corridors, Conall drew forth the almost two meter blade from its scabbard and readied himself. Stepping around the corner, he triggered the jump pack and launched himself down the hallway with blade extended forward. His face was grim, but there was a light in his eyes that bespoke terrible things for his enemies.
Nearing the heretics, he took advantage of his momentum and lashed out with the gigantic claymore from his homeworld, a low growl the only sound he made.

As Heavy Bolter ounds exploded amongst them keeping their heads down the massive armoured giant that is Conall landed amongst them. The target of his anger was sent flying to ground shattered ribs and dazed. The other 3 enemy that were close enough to touch were scattered and battered. Re: The Sin of Pride - Deathwatch
Bolt shells tear down the corridor to the right towards the 2 cowering hellgun toting enemy elite. The bolt shell flickered down the corridor at head height. Neither man could dodge the hail of brutal 75mm bolt shells. The first man took 2 bolt rounds, the first tearing off most of his jaw the second ripping off his arm and igniting the hellgun backpack. The resulting explosion touching off his grenades englufing the second man in a pillar flame as the bolt shell hammered into his chest that with the armour destroyed left no protection against the explosive bolt as his body and ammo and grenades also explode the corridor filling with explosive death and giving a blessed end to the men burning slowly to death...

Re: The Sin of Pride - Deathwatch
Conall watched his opponent, moving in time with the two heretics weapons. Kol jumped in to engage with the opponent on the left ... completely unnecessary, but perhaps there was something the Librarian wanted to prove to Conall. The Storm Warden accepted that Kol's swordplay was more technically sound than his own ... but there was something to be said for precise application of brute force as well.
Stepping forward, he brought the huge sword up quickly, quicker than should have been possible for the enormous blade, then reversed the stroke and brought it down just as swiftly.

"Seems like ah bit o' ah waste" Ivar mutters, "usin' perfectly good bolt shells on these scum".
He holds back, letting the others work, until he notices one foe that had escaped his brothers' wrath. A short burst from his weapon eliminates the straggler.
