    Default It is that time of the year again. ( General scary/creepy thread.)

    Well, forumites, it is the greatest time of the year again.

    The time where, during the newfound chill in the air, we can all get into or warm clothes and enjoy the shorter days, the colder nights, and the general feeling of the near of the end of the year.

    However, the best thing about this time of the year is that it brings out the part of us that likes being scared, with the bare trees and the fleeing of nature in general. As such, this thread is dedicated to this feeling. Is it slashers in the dark that get you gibbering, or is it unspeakable cults decended from the rituals from races long dead?

    Post general creepy stuff, ranging from personal stories ( see anything weird in a little chunk of the woods, anyone?) to links to pics, stories, and more!

    So go ahead, take a seat. There are snacks laid out in the lobby ( I personaly liked the cookies: the cupcakes are a little too moist for me.) Get a cup of your prefered beverage ( moontree wine, anyone?) If your tired and not up for conversation, you can always try and find a book from our personal suggestions and stocks. ( Dont go into the restricted section: the books there are not there for there sake.) And of course, if you feel up for it, there is a nice house down the street that is haunted, or thats what everyone says, anyway...

    Hallowe’en in a Suburb
    By H. P. Lovecraft

    The steeples are white in the wild moonlight,
    And the trees have a silver glare;
    Past the chimneys high see the vampires fly,
    And the harpies of upper air,
    That flutter and laugh and stare.

    For the village dead to the moon outspread
    Never shone in the sunset’s gleam,
    But grew out of the deep that the dead years keep
    Where the rivers of madness stream
    Down the gulfs to a pit of dream.

    A chill wind weaves thro’ the rows of sheaves
    In the meadows that shimmer pale,
    And comes to twine where the headstones shine
    And the ghouls of the churchyard wail
    For harvests that fly and fail.

    Not a breath of the strange grey gods of change
    That tore from the past its own
    Can quicken this hour, when a spectral pow’r
    Spreads sleep o’er the cosmic throne
    And looses the vast unknown.

    So here again stretch the vale and plain
    That moons long-forgotten saw,
    And the dead leap gay in the pallid ray,
    Sprung out of the tomb’s black maw
    To shake all the world with awe.

    And all that the morn shall greet forlorn,
    The ugliness and the pest
    Of rows where thick rise the stones and brick,
    Shall some day be with the rest,
    And brood with the shades unblest.

    Then wild in the dark let the lemurs bark,
    And the leprous spires ascend;
    For new and old alike in the fold
    Of horror and death are penn’d,
    For the hounds of Time to rend.
    ... I came to appreciate that mountains make poor receptacles for dreams.

    Nemesis
    H.P. Lovecraft

    Through the ghoul-guarded gateways of slumber,
    Past the wan-mooned abysses of night,
    I have lived o'er my lives without number,
    I have sounded all things with my sight;
    And I struggle and shriek ere the daybreak, being driven to madness with fright.

    I have whirled with the earth at the dawning,
    When the sky was a vaporous flame;
    I have seen the dark universe yawning
    Where the black planets roll without aim,
    Where they roll in their horror unheeded, without knowledge or lustre or name.

    I had drifted o'er seas without ending,
    Under sinister grey-clouded skies,
    That the many-forked lightning is rending,
    That resound with hysterical cries;
    With the moans of invisible daemons, that out of the green waters rise.

    I have plunged like a deer through the arches
    Of the hoary primoridal grove,
    Where the oaks feel the presence that marches,
    And stalks on where no spirit dares rove,
    And I flee from a thing that surrounds me, and leers through dead branches above.

    I have stumbled by cave-ridden mountains
    That rise barren and bleak from the plain,
    I have drunk of the fog-foetid fountains
    That ooze down to the marsh and the main;
    And in hot cursed tarns I have seen things, I care not to gaze on again.

    I have scanned the vast ivy-clad palace,
    I have trod its untenanted hall,
    Where the moon rising up from the valleys
    Shows the tapestried things on the wall;
    Strange figures discordantly woven, that I cannot endure to recall.

    I have peered from the casements in wonder
    At the mouldering meadows around,
    At the many-roofed village laid under
    The curse of a grave-girdled ground;
    And from rows of white urn-carven marble, I listen intently for sound.

    I have haunted the tombs of the ages,
    I have flown on the pinions of fear,
    Where the smoke-belching Erebus rages;
    Where the jokulls loom snow-clad and drear:
    And in realms where the sun of the desert consumes what it never can cheer.

    I was old when the pharaohs first mounted
    The jewel-decked throne by the Nile;
    I was old in those epochs uncounted
    When I, and I only, was vile;
    And Man, yet untainted and happy, dwelt in bliss on the far Arctic isle.

    Oh, great was the sin of my spirit,
    And great is the reach of its doom;
    Not the pity of Heaven can cheer it,
    Nor can respite be found in the tomb:
    Down the infinite aeons come beating the wings of unmerciful gloom.

    Through the ghoul-guarded gateways of slumber,
    Past the wan-mooned abysses of night,
    I have lived o'er my lives without number,
    I have sounded all things with my sight;
    And I struggle and shriek ere the daybreak, being driven to madness with fright.

    that... is incredibly unsettling. brrrr...
    I've recently re read a few of Edgar Allan Poe poems, which are quiet... well, creepy would be the word.

    I'm gonna try to dig up my own poem of dread. hopefuly I'll find it :)

    Bad Wolf

    Teller:
    Once upon a moonless night
    a hooded figure came to sight
    crimson cloth and shine of silver
    a vengeance angel, came to deliver

    Wolf:
    tracks of blood and smell of fear
    the monster took what he held dear
    smell of children, and I heard my name
    repeated twice, and the wolf did came

    teller:
    a little dress of woven red
    still lies upon her bed
    fear of strangers, fear of wolves
    one step closer the hunter moves

    Wolf:
    they never did believe again
    the cries of helpless men
    I had my dinner on a silver platter
    a girl or boy, it doesn't matter

    teller:
    inside his cave, upon the walls
    fur and teeth and helpless calls
    the hunter came and saw the truth
    men do have the sharpest tooth

    Wolf:
    I killed again a man in red
    and on his dead body I did fed
    little red and big red too
    I am a wolf and so are you

    Teller:
    and so our tale ends right here
    where wolves seem to tread near
    remember till the day you die
    the monster is within you and I.

    Now that is creepy. Very creepy.

    Now, for a story of my own:

    While walking home from school, I usualy pass through a wooded area near my house. While the woods are not very deep, the trees are all quite old.
    Anyway, as I was going down the path I saw what appered to be a very short person in black in the middle of the road, all hunched over. Only after walking closer to it did I relise it was a bloated black bird, with missing paches of feathers and a wicked beak! I waited for it to waddle off, but it stood in the same spot for at least 10-15 min. before it left.

    What is weird about this bird is that while it had the same body shape of somthing like a bluebird or crow, it was at least three feet tall! Not only that, it is still a bit unerving to me because it did not look like it was frighted by me at all, which is very odd considering the local wildlife.

    From IchorFalls.com

    There are no wolves in the Stillwood.

    The gray wolves of Virginia were made extinct over a hundred years ago. According to the regular surveys by the National Forestry service, no sign of any such animal has been found since 1900. The occasional reports of large predators, just after dusk or late at night, usually by the occasional hiker or party of campers in the Stillwood (residents of Lower Alethia, nearest the woods like myself, know better than to try), receive the same tired reply from Animal Control.

    "There are no wolves in the Stillwood.”

    When a pet gets lost in the dark of the Stillwood and never returns… or worse is found, mauled, the blame falls on the usual suspects: foxes, wild dogs or teenagers with too much time and too little compassion. A few years back, when the Bradleys, a little family brand new to the Falls, had their boy David go missing from their own backyard, never finding more than scraps of his jacket and a little blood at the edge of the forest, the official response was adamant: this was a kidnapping, not an animal attack. Old-timers like me just shook our heads and muttered to ourselves:

    “There are no wolves in the Stillwood.”

    So, if you want to sleep at night this close to the forest, keep your doors locked tight and your shutters closed fast, if just to buy some peace of mind, to stop you from catching a glimpse of the Stillwood late at night. And should you somehow find yourself walking near, or God forbid through, the woods some evening, head home as quick as you can. Try to ignore the sounds of the night wind, howling as it does… it will only make your imagination run wild, after all. And should you see what cannot be polychrome eyes, shining through the mists from the underbrush or somehow in the branches above, or even through your gauze of your windows should you be blessed enough to make it safely home, take what comfort you can in this thought.

    There are no wolves in the Stillwood.

    Meh, it's a little creepy. Twist at the end you can see coming, and the stop motion needs work. Still, not bad.

    I found a thread on a bird watching forum about a similarly mysterious sighting:
    http://www.whatbird.com/forums/forums/thread/81094.aspx

    Most of them come to the conclusion that it was an adult black vulture or an immature turkey vulture.

    And also I ran into this picture:

    It's most likely a fake, though admittedly, a bird of that size would be terrifying.

    Well, this requires some patience, as well the right mindset and setting - lights off, alone, late at night, silence, no TL;DR attitudes - but reading Ted's caving expedition account genuinely gave me the creeps (particularly since I've done a bit of caving myself), just when I thought nothing I would watch or read could possibly do so anymore.

    Ted's Caving is a classic. Great creepy tale.

    Also, nobody get all uppity about details or "Oh it's just blah and blah."

    I hate when people get on these threads trying to debunk everything, that ruins the whole point.
