Actually, "yay" is just an exclamation of approval, like "hooray", whereas "yea" literally means "yes".

I'm thinking there was a higher-than-average amount of snark in that particular post, actually, and that while all three may apply, Rich wasn't actually being authoritative about the answer.

The "Comic Reason" one sounds pretty authoritative to me. The other two seem to be additional after the fact reasons it works, and I can't blame Rich for any snark on his part.

Oh, I don't blame him at all. But you illustrate my point beautifully: I took his first two answers to be the real ones, particularly since Malack's lack of knowledge about dwarves was foreshadowed earlier, and the third one to be the snarky ¨because I said so". Since Rich said that we had to "pick one", the quote doesn't work as well as most of the others, which are far more definitive.

Well, I said his third one sounded authoritative because he said "This was what I came up with, because it made for a good bit of levity in the middle of the action." in it.

I really thought the "pick one" was the snarkiest bit, as in "there are multiple valid reasons you dolt".

I think all three of them could be considered "real ones". He said pick one because different people want different things. Some people care most about something making sense in terms of the plot, others care more about it making sense game mechanics wise, while others (myself included) care about what I consider to be the true reason for his decisions.

    Index Updated.

By the way, as a reminder, you can always check and see what I've added to the index in each update by scrolling to the bottom of the post and clicking on the "updates" spoiler box.

Also, does anyone know / remember what the max character-count is for a post? I think it is 50,000. The Index's first post currently stands around 30,000... just want to be prepared for the eventuality that we need to move to a new thread.

I feel your pain. I had to go multi-first-post in the MitD thread too. The limit is indeed about 50000 characters, and it includes the meta-instructions (url links are especially bad, but my over-use of spoiler tags doesn't do me any favours either).

If things get too bad, ask the mods for permission to start a new thread and close this one - they'll understand (make sure you copy the posts before you do so, though - you can't edit a post in a locked thread). In the new thread, reserve five posts, that should give you some margin.

Are they? I haven't noticed any problems yet. Maybe I should run through and do a test.

I've been using ow.ly's url system, which is similar to tinyurl.

According to a quick google search, the only set time for expiration is when ow.ly stops being a service (i.e. closes down, or the owners decide to clean their link DB).

In the second Index thread, I'll convert the links back to their standard urls since I'll have the space to do so. That way if any of the services ever do close down, we won't lose the links (which would be hard to re-find with search and post history disabled).

I'm not too worried about the index situation as I think the mods will be fine with a new index being opened when the time comes. Just trying to keep an eye on the character-count.

You can make use of the THREAD and POST tags to save some space. For example:

[thread=220195]The Index of the Giant's Comments[/thread] will give you this:

The Index of the Giant's Comments

Which will take you to the first post of this thread. You get the number to use in the THREAD tag right from the URL when you've clicked a link for a thread, for example:

    http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=220195

is the URL for this thread.

    The POST tag works similarly.

[post=14798404]ThePhantasm's most recent post in this thread as of me starting this post[/post] will give you this:

ThePhantasm's most recent post in this thread as of me starting this post

You can get the number to use in a POST tag by hovering your mouse over - or clicking on - the number in the top right corner of every post. In that URL, there will be a string that starts &p={some number}. What you want is the {some number} part.

I think those tags will use less space than the URL tag with a tiny url source in them. Hope that proves helpful.

Thanks, that's helpful. If I use the post tag for a different (non-Index) thread, will it lead straight to that post or do I need to work in the thread tag as well somehow? Are posts uniquely identified for the whole forum or just per thread?
