Re: Machines of War
Sometime around midnight you lose the trail. You pass the night restlessly, but with the light of morning you may be able to pick up the trail again.

Re: Machines of War
You are able to find the trail at dawn, and you follow it until noon, when they apparently start following a dirt road. Make another survival check to track them on this new surface.

Re: Machines of War
The tracks continue east. As far as you can tell, it is a group of three, probably male.

Re: Machines of War
Hard to tell if they're human or not, but their boot soles are definitely not from a woman's boot.
It's almost evening (but not yet dark). As you come around a bend in the road you find four men, humans, obstructing your path.

Re: Machines of War
One has a greatsword, one has a bastard sword and shield, one a rapier, and the last a shortbow. They have no uniforms, are unshaven and unkempt. The brush on each side of the road is thick enough to impede movement, but is not impassable.

I thought I tried to stab him, but whatever, fire my bow again at the greatsword guy. (Humans are Jasters favored enemies.)

Bastard sword guy, the short one who demanded your money, tries to bring a bastard sword down on your head slash - (1d20+4)[8] damage - (1d6+2)[8]
The rapier guy moves forward, but stays behind his friend.
Greatsword charges you. charge - (1d20+6)[22]damage - (2d6+3)[6]. Since his friends are in his way, bow guy just stands there, ready to fire if you make a run for it.Originally Posted by The Giant

Re: Machines of War
Your first blow levels him, and I'll redirect your dagger strike to the only one close enough - the bastard sword guy. He retaliates with a grunt [roll-swing]1d20+4[/roll](1d0+2)[3]. Then he sidesteps so his buddy can get closer too.
Rapier stab (1d20+4)[19]damage - (1d6+1)[2]. Bow guy again waits.

Re: Machines of War
He goes down, bleeding profusely enough he could get a job advertising kool-aid. The rapier guy tries to take one last stab(1d20+4)[7] (1d6+1)[4] before running away. (take an attack of opportunity if you like). Likewise, the bowman fires a parting shot (1d20+5)[18](1d8)[6]. They retreat down the road.

You slash him with your sword, leaving a bleeding stripe down his back. (you only get one AoO).
You hear them crashing through the brush in the woods.

Re: Machines of War
The guy with the rapier got away. Besides their mundane weapons, between the two bodies (still breathing, but shallowly) is about 265 gold they have in their purses, and some jewels and jewelry, probably valued at another three hundred gold.

I thought I killed the rapier guy. Write "you got off lucky" in blood on the shield and go to the next inn that my original quarry was heading in the direction of.

Re: Machines of War
Nope, just winged him. The road up ahead forks. One leads northeast, the other, southeast. Make a survival check.

Re: Machines of War
They are on the road heading southeast. It looks like they passed this way about three hours ago.

Re: Machines of War
You can retry a failed check after one hour of searching. Your luck couldn't last forever.
