Like another, strange bolt of lightning, Marros descends in a mysterious blur, striking at Kurjan's face.
As his fist collides, there is a crackle of black sparks about his hand, and Kurjan roars in rage at seeing the monk had eluded capture.
Twisting in mid-air, Kurjan's magical protections leave Marros striking at empty air, only to come upon the necromancer's true location through blind-luck, raising up more sparks with each strike.

SpoilerInitiative (1d20+8)[27]
I can't attack since I'm still falling, right? In that case:
Still falling, Alex quickly turns in the air once, facing the largest group of orcs he had spied from his position at the top of the tower after using the scroll. With a flick of his wrist and using his index and pinkie to aim, he releases a small white ball that explodes into a giant web, trapping and slowing the orcs.
SpoilerUsing cloak of arachnida to cast web at the largest group of orcs possible without trapping the sheriffs or dwarves (or any other allie). It has a reach of 120 ft and a DC 14. I think the largest group was at the southeast corner, but I may be wrong.
Will edit if necesary.
Sorry, mistake...

On further consideration, Therandil should maybe be neutral...the way I'm playing him, which I hadn't really planned out in full ahead of time, he's got some good-leaning moral intuitions, but he missed out on a few crucial lessons about what is and is not okay within the ethical framework of a civilized society. This tends to lead him to a few...lapses. Thoughts?
And his 'innocence' is also welcome...
Mind you, I like the way he turned out.
By the way, can I get a name for Therandil's mother?

Re: Fortuitous Findings in Foraging: A Study, Part II
SpoilerYou're assuming he's moving somewhere Marros can follow?
Oh, and I rather like your playing of Therandil as well A S. He's not so much "good" or "bad" in the human sense. He has a dragon's perspective, so much less emphasis on the value of human morality/social mores.
It's pretty awesome.

Re: Fortuitous Findings in Foraging: A Study, Part II
SpoilerA banner of the storm’s eye must be held overhead to function. You can mount the banner on a pole that you hold in one hand, or you can mount it on a backpack frame that leaves both hands free. Such a backpack frame costs 5 gp and weighs 10 pounds, but it’s bulky. The wearer of the backpack frame has a maximum Dexterity bonus to Armor Class of +3 and a –3 armor check penalty. These penalties don’t stack with those from armor or encumbrance, so armored or heavily laden characters might not take the penalty.
As long as it’s held overhead, the banner functions without requiring any further action on the part of its bearer.

SpoilerBanner of the Storm's Eye - refluffed to have the symbol of the Unbroken circle. It occupies my shoulder slot, comboed with my war wizard's cloak.
MiC Page 151:
As long as it is held aloft, the banner automatically suppresses (but does not dispel) fear effects on all creatures within 20 feet. It also prevents any creature
within 20 feet from becoming confused or stunned.
Alternatively, you can mount the banner on a backpack frame to leave your hands free. The backpack frame costs 5 gp and weighs 10 pounds. While so mounted, the banner occupies your shoulders body slot.

Re: Fortuitous Findings in Foraging: A Study, Part II
SpoilerHmm, never saw anything about the armor check penalty, where is that from Oasys?
My search for it took me to the Explorer's Handbook...
...but I believe the Compendium supersedes that.
My reasoning was that Marros wasn't using the banner because 1. He hadn't applied the armor penalty and 2. he hadn't mentioned having it when facing the ghosts on three previous occasions.
Are they each getting all of the specials?
...the Dark Tide infused undead with disturbing new, dark abilities...
...deadly chills, hardened flesh and nimble bones...
More worryingly, the Dark Tide appears to have imbued all kinds of undead with the ability to drain positive energy from the living...
...this writer's hand trembles to wonder what may have been given to undead who could already use this frightening power...
...bad enough, the Dark Tide appears to bolster the strengths and downplay the weaknesses of the undead-ghosts manifest from the ethereal with haste, and wield a far greater ranger of deadly powers... I wonder... vampires and wights, ghouls liches?
Are they each getting all of the specials?- Ghosts Manifest as a Swift Action, have all three of their Special Attacks, and other unrevealed abilities...
- All undead have the Energy Drain ability, deal an additional 1d6 cold damage, and other unrevealed abilities..
Heck no!Swift: activate Dragon Mask for See Invisibility (5 minutes). Lets me see ethereal creatures as well.

If you wanted to rule that there is an armor penalty, he could carry it all the time and attack normally. That could be kinda cool actually...

Re: Fortuitous Findings in Foraging: A Study, Part II
SpoilerFair reasoning, but 1. There is no armor penalty. and 2. They had not tried to fear me, in our previous encounters.
When manifested they are no longer invisible. They are still incorporeal, but can be seen normally. Barring the Dark Tide voodoo of course.
Soooo, retcon for Marros?
A retcon indeed then, Marros would still succumb to the Horrifying Gaze and potentially the Corrupting Gaze, though the Moan would have no effect as long as he's got the Banner equipped.
And assuming the banner is like those ones worn on the back in ancient armies, like in Japan, I'd think penalties are warranted, whatever the Compendium says.
The banner-bearer was NOT meant to fight.

Re: Fortuitous Findings in Foraging: A Study, Part II
SpoilerSo which way do you want to rule on this? He can simply hold it as a banner and fight easily enough. Or maybe just have it be a smaller banner on my back, make the effect personal only and reduce the cost somewhat? I'm happy to work with you on this.
your hands free. The backpack frame costs 5 gp and weighs 10 pounds. While
so mounted, the banner occupies your shoulders body slot.
- If he's wearing it on his back, he'd take the -3 penalties. It would work as described in the MIC, in a 20 ft. radius.
- He can remove it from its frame, and wear it as a cloak, for a personal effect, no penalty.
- He can hold it in both hands, aloft for the full effect, and I guess use it as an improvised weapon with two hands?
Okay, so I smacked the Orc around!
Marros has blindsight and trueseeing active at the moment.
Would you say Alex knows about the ghost's gaze? If so, I think I may have a way to stop them.
Also, did you make a new kind of gaze or did you mix up Corrupting Gaze and Horrific Appearence?
...I don't think so...
...why?

Re: Fortuitous Findings in Foraging: A Study, Part II
SpoilerWell, I'd say he has no idea the ghosts are THERE, since the range of the moans are 30 ft, so Alex and everyone on the ground remain blissfully unaware...
As for the moans, wouldn't he hear them but be unaffected at that distance?
Uh...
...I don't think so...
...why?
By the way, Marros should be immune to quite a few Frightful Moans and Horrific Appearence since he saved against them.
: I may be in error, but I believe the appropiate proclamation is "Sneak Attack, bitch."
Thoughts on fanfiction.

Re: Fortuitous Findings in Foraging: A Study, Part II
SpoilerSo he's safe from them? (For the moment)
As for the moans, wouldn't he hear them but be unaffected at that distance?
Okay, I like that ruling. For now, the frame is in his haversack, (say full round action to assemble and equip?) and the banner is equipped personally. If he held it in his hands, he would just attack with his free hand/feet. It's good to be a monk.
So I say again, I smacked the orc around?
And makes a Spot Check.

Re: Fortuitous Findings in Foraging: A Study, Part II
SpoilerOkay, so what did he do?
If they are in range, he would shift his flurry attacks to the ghosts.
No problemo.
