Indeed. It's really awesome and terrifying.

You write the music and I'll write the lyrics, we'll have him speak Dracula's lines.

Therion? I seem to remember there being some organs in Lemuria / Sirius B here and there. Probably synths, though.

Theatre of Tragedy does have cool lyrics, but unfortunately, they're Early Modern English (like Shakespeare). You're on the right track, though. Just need to turn the clock back about one more century. For reference, Old English and Middle English look like this and this respectively.

...Hmm, this might be a question for the general music thread.

    Totally will do.

Wodesthrone's on my short list. And I just checked out Winterfylleth thanks to your suggestion. Awesome. I'm a sucker for anything about pre-Norman Invasion England. Wish they'd do some lyrics in Anglo-Saxon, though.

Those pro-Norman bastards! I do like songs commemorating specific historical battles, though. Like this little masterpiece. Anywho, these guys should totally do a split with Wodensthrone or Winterfylleth to show opposing perspectives on the matter.

Hmm, makes me wonder: are splits ever conceptual?

Huh. I never noticed that about that song. And yeah, it's definitely Modern English with a few archaic words incorporated into it. Cool find!

Also, WOAH! Revelation! I looked at the lyrics to Winterfylleth's "The Wayfarer" trilogy of songs from The Mercian Sphere and realized that they're collectively a translation of the famous* Anglo-Saxon poem "The Wanderer" (which is the Modern English title scholars most commonly refer to it as). I didn't think anything of it on my first listen-through because the poem title was translated differently and I was mostly just looking at the track titles. Anyway, I'm presuming the whole poem is translated by their lyricist himself, as I can't find an established translation that matches their lyrics (online or in either of my Anglo-Saxon poetry books). I wonder if the album's booklet would have more info. So yeah, I'm gonna nerd out over this for a while.

*as famous as a poem in a dead language can be, that is. /pretending The Odyssey and its ilk don't exist.

Tolkien also stole bits of the Wanderer and put it in Lord of the Rings. I only recently discovered that. I had thought the Ensiferum song The Wanderer was related to the poem somehow, but looking at the lyrics, I guess not.

I've read that poem while on a classical literature stint between Gothic horror and hard sci-fi runs, and I liked it.

A reason why not a lot of bands write in the proper old English is that in order to really learn it, you need to be a classic languages major (those exist, had a Latin teacher who majored in it), whom are rare. Factor in the relative obscurity of this type of music and the math should even out.

Also writing in Latin is really difficult if you're not a classics major. Did it once.

    Never again.

Addentum: Whilst this is on the more goth-y aspect of things, Mirrorthrone has some piano mostly, but some of it has organ and harpsichord synth.

I considered going to the Michigan show for Slayer and Anthrax, but decided against it. I'm not enough of a Thrash fan to really want to go to a show where I wouldn't be able to mosh, which would be the case at the venue where they're playing unless I paid through the nose to get right up next to the stage. Also it's only four days after I'm going to see Maiden at the same venue, and I probably just won't be able to swing both trips out there anyway.

Have a betting pool going on how Pitchfork's gonna rate it. 9.8, 9.1, and 7.3 are the popular bets, although I think 8.4's pretty likely.

I looked at the lyrics to that song on M-A and used Google Translate for the verses in French. They're definitely all about how awesome William the Conqueror was.

Yeah, one character recited a very similar ubi sunt. And it makes sense that he'd throw that in there; saying Tolkien enjoyed Anglo-Saxon poetry would be quite the understatement. That's a shame about the Ensiferum song, though. Might've made me want to give that album another chance. Oh well.

I get that, but there's a wealth of Old English and Middle English poetry that can be used for song lyrics. I mean, sure, it would be impressive if a lyricist wrote their own lyrics in either of those languages, but that's not necessarily what I'm looking for. If they use one of those many poems, the only thing they'd have to do research on is pronunciation at that point.

Kind of had a derp moment with this Winterfylleth album. There is also a translation of "The Ruin" on there. The title is the generally accepted one, so I don't have an excuse this time. Anywho, there is a common theme among these poems: all earthly things will come to pass. Works well with Black Metal methinks.

I want that split so bad. Both Grunt and Richard Ramirez are awesome. There's a certain extra edge to it because Mikko Aspa (he's the man behind Grunt) runs a porn mag and distributor and Ramirez is gay, haha. Stuff like that happens a lot with noise actually. Loads of collaborations as well.

A few more that come to mind. Midnight and Toxic Holocaust did a split, the proceeds of which went to the Red Cross' efforts in Japan after the semi-recent tsunami. Both songs were about the tsunami and nuclear meltdown that came after. There are of course splits dedicated to covers/tributes. Noise act The Rita and black metal band Bone Awl did a "split" that was really essentially a collaboration. Bone Awl also did the somewhat weird Vinland - Finland split that was two bands from... wine countries versus two bands from Finland...

Then there are of course splits between projects including the exact same people, such as the Corridors split between The Axis of Perdition and Pulsefear, as well the almost silly case of Mikko Aspa releasing a split consisting of songs by three of his seperate projects.

I feel like I've heard other splits meant to be more than just a few songs together, but no more come to mind in such a way that it would require more effort than simply searching for stuff I'm already aware of on discogs/MA and I'm feeling lazy as hell.

Anyway, I love splits for serious. They just seem super punk, black metal and noise and those genres make me gooey.

Ugh, it's doing that thing where my post doesn't show up without another post. Apparently Mikko did a triple split again, and there's plenty of cases of him doing two project splits. Richard Ramirez has done that too with his various projects I think.

Night in Gales - Five Scars

Pretty much one of germany's first melodic death metal bands. Can't write more now, gotta bathe in the music.

I don't really like splits, conceptually. Like, why not just do an awesome collab instead?

Maybe I'm just super album oriented and a lot of splits that I've encountered aren't much more than two unrelated EPs glued together and I just don't see the point.

I like what splits represent (underground musical community) and some of my favorite releases ever are EPs and demos, so...

Also... Soulfly just got accepted to Metal Archives. lolololol They reminded me that Roadrunner Records are as bad as Century Media and Nuclear Blast.

Yeah but you could just like get rid of the split part of splits and release two separate EPs and it would probably accomplish the same thing. EPs and demos can be swell, but if two bands are going to work together they should actually work together.
