Alright, the room at the end of the hall that one of the soldiers was guarding. Room number 13, by the way.

Will you be carrying a light source? It'll make you easier to spot, of course, but you won't have to make Mobility checks for moving in total darkness, and it'll be easier to pick the lock if the door happens to be locked.

Mattock gets his crossbow, and he and Jack walk slowly towards the room at the end of the hall while Aly remains in her room. Jack keeps his eyes and ears peeled but detects no signs of trouble.

You make it to the door to room number 13 which you presume to be the captain's room.

Attempting to pick a lock takes one round which is ... about 5-10 seconds. If you try to open a lock several times, just make all the rolls in one post to avoid double, triple or quadruple posting.

Struggling with a lock isn't very epic, so I'm going to rule that you manage to open the lock and enter the room.

Mattock and Jack enter the room. There's the smell of a recently snuffed candle hanging in the air, mixed with the smell of rain. The window has been hastily pried open, and the wooden frame that held the glass panels is now lying on the floor, shattered glass around it. Except for moonlight pouring in, it's dark in the room. Whoever was in the room apparently managed to slip outside moments before you entered, and is now making an awful racket by walking on the slippery tiles on the roof.

The wet slate tiles look rather precarious to walk on (TN 15 to walk normally, or TN 10 if you use your hands to support yourself and move at half speed.)

Jack spots the man, he's not very far. You can get a pretty clear shot if you want to shoot him with your bow.

Jack heard no-one coming up the stairs. Not yet, anyway. The racket's been going on for just 10 seconds, so it might take a while until any guards or inn personnel come upstairs to check out what is going on.

The man looks like an Invictus soldier. He's wearing the typical brigandine armor of light infantry troops, with symbols of Invictus on it.

is it safe to assume he's dead? Haha id hate for him to somehow mess things up. I figured that it wouldn't stack, but a guy can dream

Jack smiles to himself, enjoying the irony of being taught how to use a bow by the Invictus. "Ok now we do your plan. How'd it go? I shoot the guy then we kill them all and tie up the captain?" he says as he places his candle at head height right in front of the door. "We don't have much time before they get here so we should get ready." He retreats to the back of the room and knocks another arrow while trying to hide in the shadows.

    Spoiler
    Show
the idea for the candle is this: have you ever had a campfire? If so then you'll know that your eyes adjust to the light so you can't see into the shadows around you very well and its almost impossible to see the otherside over the fire. But everyone in the shadows can see you very well because your so close to the light. When the guards come in they can't see us in the shadows, but we can see them.

Stealth to hide even more (1d20+6)[18] and hopefully a decent circumstance bonus?
