Alyera sees no-one outside, but the noises she heard sounded a lot like someone had tried to walk on the roof but fell off the roof.

Jack and Mattock prepare themselves for the fight against the captain's men, positioning themselves and the light source strategically so that they cannot see you well but you can see them.

A few seconds later, Alyera hears rapid footsteps coming up the stairs, and the shouts of men. They spread out, checking each corridor and shouting back and forth and knocking "no-one here, no-one here either". Someone knocks on Alyera's door.

Jack and Mattock, too, can hear the shouts and frantic footsteps.

The question marks indicate the current locations of the men searching the upper floor:

Aly sees Sergeant Ruger, the big brute you briefly saw earlier tonight. He is holding a lantern in one hand and a sword in the other. The look in his eyes is murderous and his hands are shaking with anger. "Somebody shot my friend in the back and threw him down so we're checking all guests and their rooms."

He pushes past Aly into the room and looks around, but finds nothing of interest.

"Alright, stay in your room and keep yer door locked."

Ruger leaves, continuing the search with the other soldiers.

Jack and Mattock hear the footsteps of the men approaching.

(I don't know if you closed the door but I assume you did)

The handle of the door turns and the door opens slightly. The door is pushed open but Jack sees no-one standing in the hall, just the light of a lantern and the shadow of a man standing around the corner.

You can hear the man whispering: "Can't see nothing, boss. Somebody put a candle there, it's hard to see if there's someone there."

It's your turn. Remember, you can move 5 squares per action (ie, 10 squares if take a double move). If you have a light source, you can run (Mobility check to increase your speed). If it's dark, you cannot run, and you have to make a Mobility check TN 5 to move at half speed or TN 15 to move at normal speed. So, before you leave the room, decide whether you take the candle with you or not.

Jack sees that they've dropped a lantern at the intersection of the corridors (! = lantern on the map). The lantern broke, but it still sheds some light around it (the square it's in and everything within 2 squares are illuminated). Still, you cannot see the captain or his henchman. He also realizes that he can only hear the footsteps of one man moving towards the stairs, but the other man has stopped moving.

Mobility TNs for falling down are as follows: Staying alive TN = 5 for each floor beyond the first. Escaping without injuries TN = 5 for each floor (approximately 10 feet) you fall down. So, in this case you have no chance of dying unless you have a Mobility penalty, and TN 5 is enough to land safely, no broken bones or twisted ankles.

EDIT: And these TNs are for voluntarily jumping down. Add +5 to the TN if you are pushed or thrown down or your foot slips. Moreover, if you are unconscious, you lose any bonus on Mobility.
