I think he means that suceeding on your save means your character is moving so she does not catch the worst of it or already is in such a place.

Correct. I believe his example was assuming that the entire pillar of fire has only a 5-foot radius, so the reflex save would represent moving to the edge of the pillar (still in one square).

Wait, what? You're arguing about whether or not someone could dodge a magically summoned tower of flame "in the real world"?? That's like saying that pick-pocket A couldn't have made with character B's purse of 5000 gold pieces because "in the real world" 5000 gp would weigh in at over 150 kilos(*) and character B would have noticed the loss. It's the DM's call, so just aCcept it and move on.

(*) Based on coins of one troy ounce (31g) each, eg full Kruggerand, Canadian Maple, or US Gold Eagle. Fractional gold coins weigh leass but are of course fractional, so must also count for less when totally the value of the purloined purse.

Gold pieces are very unlikely to be made of pure gold - you know that, right? It's way too soft to hold any sort of mark, stamp, or even a solid shape for very long under the beating adventurers put their money through. So even 1GP is probably half or less Au by weight.

Oh you silly people. DnD isn't made of atoms.

Its made of EXP. Everything in it is. The EXP is just in different forms. The "Gold" you speak of has completely different properties from Atom-Gold. EXP-Gold obviously has all the necessary properties to be valuable money of course.
I'm also on discord as "raziere".

i dont think i ever used the word magic. But if somehow, for some reason, i was caught in the middle of a piller of flame thirty feet wide and you were caught just on the edge of it, it would be impossible for me to take less damage then you, even if i did the equivalent of succeeding a reflex roll and you did not.

Isnt a reflex roll basically saying, "You sensed an attack coming and jumped out of the way just in time"? The other version would be, you TRIED to dodge but couldnt make it all the way out of the attack, so its like, you managed to dodge a punch aimed at your throat, but took a glancing hit to your shoulder instead. It did way less damage, but it still hurt dangit!

It isn't you dodging to the edge, in that case, it is you taking the full force of the spell to the face and getting knocked to the edge.

Reflex doesn't mean moving (obviously); rather, it means doing something quickly to mitigate the damage. Ducking and covering yourself with a thick cloak, perhaps, or other actions.

Huh. Coulda swore I answered that this morning but meh...

91.67% by weight or 22/24 gold (hence the designation 22kt) alloyed with 8.33% copper for Crown Gold, the stuff bullion coins have been made of since IIRC the 16th century. The copper is there specifically to provide the requisite durability, but the actual value is based on the gold content, of one troy ounce. That puts the total mass at a hair under 34g for "real world" coins or slightly more then what I quoted above but I was felling generous.

    ETA: ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_gold

i dont think i ever used the word magic.
Perhaps not, but given the origin of the tower of flame in question, I'm pretty sure it's sudden appearance is not intended to be natural even if it is specified as doing "non-magical fire damage.

Well they might be, nothing says anything on that map is close together, could be really zoomed out and every inch is like twenty miles or something.

So is this the first time we've learned the name of the Goblin's clan? or has it been brought up before? i remember something about the clan being so dishonoured that they can't even speak it's name anymore.
