Dammit, I went to class and by the time I came back the Start of Darkness prize was gone. Ah well, $96 is a bit much for me anyway. I thought it would be Start of Darkness by itself...

I pledged for the original $65 DStP & the Giant advised me to message him through Kickstarter about adding books, which I have since done with W&XP and Snips.

So send the Giant a message through Kickstarter. I can't say for certain obviously but as long as a book isn't out of stock you should be able to add more to your order by paying more & topping up the postage from envelope to big 3-10 book box.

You never know. We might get to the point where SoD gets it's own reprint too. The Giant has hinted at a potential All-Book-Bonanza pledge before we see the end of this.

I own all the books, so when the initial offer for autographed books came up I jumped on it. Then today I was lucky enough to be online to jump on the new offer for two autographed books. I'm even willing to up my current pledge if there's a new pledge for more autographed books in one pledge amount. I just hope I'm online if it does happen.

I love the Mystery Prize, challenge and all !

Also I love it that Rich found a way to respond to those like me who don't want to add to their already complete book collection. What with the new Mystery Prize on top of the already unexpected 3 extra stories, $10 was such a ridiculously good deal, it was embarrassing
So, looking forward to the new non-book rewards ...

Of course, with 20 pages for O'Chul, 30 pages for 3 8-12 page stories, and now a Julio story, there are almost too many pages for a book K exclusive story. :)

I go to work, come back, and it was almost at $140,000! I got excited thinking that meant No Cure for the Paladin Blues. Then I read the update... yeesh. Mixed bag. Still, unless the rate of pledges plummets, we should break the $150,00 mark before the next update.

Anyway, I've been hearing people saying that there's going to be a Julio story included somewhere, but I couldn't find it in the project page. Someone point it out for me please

The rate is starting to decrease.
We've had a drop of about 5% for the hourly average over the last 7 hours, compared to the previous 24.

Well, figured I could probably just about afford to kick in $45 so I could get a copy of the book, but I was going to wait until nearer to the end so I could have a couple more paychecks before then (I realize I won't be charged until it's over, but I don't like pledging away money I don't actually have).

But, y'know, for just another $23, I could get a copy of SSaDT, and that's really quite a bonus. Plus, it's only $68 for WaXPs, SSaDT, five bonus stories, and a magnet . . . and I should get my tax return sometime in February, and taking $70 out of it isn't exactly gonna bankrupt me . . .

Well, there's a limited amount of that reward, and while it's not selling out too terribly quickly, I ain't takin' any chances. My mom was not thrilled to hear that I spent so much money on comic books, but $68 has been pledged.

Well, considering that the members list shows that there are 39,885 members of this forum, and a fair number of people read without ever registering, I'm going to go with "over 37,000 more people" (Of course, not all the listed members are still active, some don't read the comic, some can't afford/don't want the books, etc, so I'm not expecting 37,000 more pledges.)

    Hmm...

If the forum members each gave the currant average ($47.8somethinsomethingsomething, based on the number of backers and amount of $$$ as of this post), then Rich would be $1,771,608.27 richer.

That is a lot of money.

I had no idea there were that many people on the forums. Now I understand how things like Childs Play can raise so much.

I'm almost certain that the readership of OotS in in the hundreds of thousands. But before you say anything about that, this is about when the "1% guideline" comes in to play. That's the general guideline that one should only expect 1 percent or so of your readership to actively help contribute to your project. It's by no means a hard and fast rule, or even anything based in any sort of statistical analysis, as far as I know. Instead it is more a warning of, "Only expect a sliver of your audience to actively back you". Whether it really is 1%, 5%, or .1% is kinda irrelevant to the general advice.

That being said, I would also point out the following: Many people, by and large, have more "pocket money" on the first and/or fifteenth of the month (for what should be obvious reasons, I would think). So, even with the initial bar set at $10, it is entirely possible that many people are waiting until they get their next paycheck before making sure that they have the spare money to contribute. Or, hike up their pledge to a different amount. Especially since we just came off the holiday season and people also have to worry about paying off some of the holiday debts that were incurred (or replenish savings that were depleted).

So I wouldn't at all be surprised to see a spike at the beginning of February and another one in the middle of the month.

If anyone was still wondering, I asked Rich if there might be potential stock issues for SSaDT, since when it first showed up it was limited, but there's a few unlimited bundles with them. His reply:

It's unlikely; it turns out my information on the stock levels was based on an out-of-date report at the time I put that up. I can't "unlimit" that reward now that it's up, though. But we have over 1000 copies of SSaDT left, I'm told, which makes it highly unlikely we will sell out.

It is very possible that this entire pledge drive might represent the functional end of the stock, however, because if we get to less than 200 copies, I'll probably pull it off Ookoodook and save the remaining to use as future prizes for stuff like Kickstarter drives.

    Thanks for asking!

Well, look at that. There was a new reward up for $35, which just added the SSaDT book.

Since I have all the books except NCftPB and SSaDT, and I was planning on buying SSaDT anyway, I figured why not, and upped my pledge from $10 to $35! I effectively just added the book, plus shipping and handling, for about the same price I would have spent actually "buying" it.

And when I looked on the page, there were 0 people who'd picked that one, out of 200. And when I was done, there was 1... which means, as of this moment, I am the first person to choose that specific limited award! It's also the first limited award I didn't miss entirely.

Now I wonder if, after tomorrow morning when we go over 150k, there will be a way to add NCftPB to that specific bundle (like the one with only SSaDT and War and XP), since I purchased all the rest of the books already when they were in print... (I never could find NCftPB. Every place I looked was out of stock, even when they had the others!)

On another note: As others may have said... the amount of content the Giant is already producing for those who've pledged (FIVE stories so far?!) is, while not enough for a new book, certainly a start! If I were to consider a book that had those stories in print, one should keep in mind that I've purchased books with much less new content, such as Dungeon Crawlin Fools! It would be a neat book to see exist, though, with this content plus others. I wouldn't expect anything like that to come out anytime soon, but hey, might as well put the suggestion out there... depending on the page count, the five may already come out to about half the size of the prequel books. Double it and you've got something I'd totally buy!

There will most likely be another surge in pledges when NCftPB gets added to the rewards.

There will. First, NCftPB will presumably be added in all kinds of packages, see if one qualifies to satisfy your specific need. Secondly, as NCftPB is freshly printed the only limiting factor is how much copies of SSaDT are on stock -and you already pledged for one of those. If you can't find a reward package to your liking, just message the Giant via kickstarter and negotiate the price to be added to your pledge for him to add a copy of NCftPB.
Not if my index finger has anything to say about it. And, as it turned out, it had quite the stirring dissertation prepared on that very subject.

    --Rich
So Rich, I wonder if you are starting to understand how much your fans love your work yet? Personally speaking you've provided me with hours of quality entertainment over the last 8 or so years I've been reading OOTS, and that's why I bought the books - to pay you for those quality reading hours. Little did I know at the time that OOTS only gets more awesome when read in print! I have no idea how you achieve the flow doing one strip at a time, but you do. (I suspect talent & hard work..) It does make me a little sad that the reward PDFs will never see print though, or will they? Dun dun dunhhh!

So, I shall definitely be pledging, although unfortunately I cannot be as generous as I would like (and you deserve) due to financial constraints. I'm definitely also interested in non-book (unless you do find more Don't Split books - that's the only one I don't have yet) rewards, at sub-$50 if possible. Fridge magnets / xmas tree ornaments that may be kicking around. Stuff like that would be nice, I've never been one for autographed stuff and they sell out instantly anyhow.

Thanks for all the OOTS strips, the recent ones have been fantastic and I look forward to the next book coming out.

EDIT: Pledge made, look forward to seeing if any fresh rewards tempt me higher.

OK, I have just created a second account on kickstarter ready for when the Giant releases the next round of pledge options, since I don't want to miss out on the signed books I pledged for yesterday.

Oh, I'm excited that we're almost at $150k. No Cure for the Paladin Blue is the only book I don't have, so that's getting ordered as soon as it comes up.

Following the kickstarter has been oddly addictive as well.

We all have a good raisin to do so! Those who don't pledge will suffer from sour grapes, whereas I have a date with some good Oots stuff! With all these great deals we will all feel like sultans or sultanas!
