    "Because
Sometimes after dark you call me Mikaila. And I don't mind it.
Ain't nobody who calls me Sette the way ya call me Mikaila."

I almost actually started crying. The emotion here is so poignant.

And Gez, you have an amazing memory. I didn't notice some of that either!

Boy, those Aldish really go all out with their executions, eh?

    So, now some big questions--
1--why did he wind up a galit instead of a plod, or just a buried bonepile?
2--Is Duane correct about the circumstances of his murder, or was the hit on him arranged by someone else entirely, like that ponce he decked, for example?

It's almost certainly a false flag operation. And if it's one, it's probably not because he punched that guy -- it was likely planned quite a while beforehand. In fact, it's even possible that he was nominated for that composer position precisely because they knew he'd never actually make it there, but it'd make him a stronger symbol. Being a member of the lowest caste made him disposable; being an extremely talented Ssaelit wright made him a perfect martyr.

Going back on the Khert-flashback, that last panel is certainly significant. This isn't a Crescian who's spying on Duane's moves. Looks like to be the same caste as Duane. In fact, he even kinda looks like Lemuel -- who was crying earlier, as if he knew something worse than a beating was going to happen, and refused to tell Duane what was really troubling him.

Note that among the Crescian thugs, there are some who use aldish caste slurs. The ritual thing also seems quite unneeded as far as agit-prop goes -- why order that the heart must still be beating during mutilation? Why would a Gefendur worry about doing "that" to a Ssaelit cleric? The possibility that it was a gang of Crescian thugs (not agents) recruited by a few Aldish conspirators (who might have glamered their look so that the thugs could be kept in the dark and not spill the beans once they're caught) is very strong. The thugs are caught, the guys who hired them aren't.

Hmm.... can someone be made into a galit only if killed in a certain ritualistic way? Was making a galit out of him the plan from the start?

Erm, no. Duane started hungering for flesh and fled because of it.

"I began to crave my teeth in his stomach. Then I wished to find Leysa, and taste her blood too. I fled."

Pious family man that he is, do you think Duane could have actually mentally survived eating his family?

HAHAHAHA!!! This was a good one.

Did you know that Pepsi Cola got it's name from Dyspepsia, the condition it was originally marketed to treat back when fizzy drinks were sold as medicine, not as beverages?

She got quite a bit of useful information out of that dream, which was very useful in manipulating him during their little talk. Is that how her da would want her to use that information? Yes it is. Is it how she feels it's right to use that information? Apparently not.

Oh, and Duane ate no members of his family.

I get the feeling Winalils set this up with a lot more than just setling a family debt in mind. I think he might be making a move to take the silver for himself. Or maybe he plans on seeing what happens when Duane eats it.

Pulling from Ashley's formspring . . . Galit doesn't actually mean anything. It's an aldish word, maybe Ssaelit especially. It just means 'damned.' They refer to the undead that way there. There's no word for the thing Duane has become that we know of.

I had a nice chat with the author of Unsounded after I ordered some books for Christmas (the address got mis-entered so I had to email her).

We talked about world-building and stuff. I really admire what she did with the Unsounded world. She said stuff about how you have to toe the line between creating an alien versus human-relatable world. It was interesting.

In regards to galits: Duane is, essentially, completely unprecedented. As far as anyone knows it's impossible for a zombie to be possessed by itself (ghosts can infest plods, but not the plod's own spirit). There's no reason to have an actual word for it.

For that matter, it's impossible to physically enter the khert, as Sette did in Chapter 7.

I suspect Nary and Bastion both know something we don't...
