A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
This is the planning thread for a universe based on Avatar: The Last Airbender Series. I couple of my friends have been talking to me about wanting to try something like this, and as far as I know it hasn't existed, so I figured it's worth a try. So, who would be interested in this?

As I said in the main thread, yes. As either a firebender or non-bender.

Re: A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
I've already got an idea for my first character, but I can't decide which nation she should be from. Since she's not a bender, it won't have as much of an impact as if she were, but if she's Fire Nation during the war, it could cause complications which might or might not be fun. Thoughts?

Re: A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
Speaking of war, have we decided a time period? I don't think either Aang's time or Korra's time are suitable for the somewhat obvious reason that no one would be able to play an airbender, because they're all dead.
I mean, sure, the series is called The Last Airbender, but that's no reason to stop players from playing one. Only the Avatar him/herself should be off-limits.Last edited by Ashen Lilies; 2012-05-03 at 04:38 AM.

Re: A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
Here's what I was thinking: it would be 200 years before the fire nation invasion, so we have all the elements and no war. (Not saying starting a war of our own wouldn't be fun )
So if we were to go with my idea, you can be in any nation you want! I can't guarantee that there won't be a war in the nation you select. (Although, being a refugee and trying to journey to somewhere safe might be fun).
I was wondering what we're going to do about the avatar, should there only be one? I mean, there's only SUPPOSED to be one, but would everyone be OK with that?
Also, I'm willing to be side characters for the plot. (My cabbages!)Last edited by captainspazam; 2012-05-03 at 07:07 AM.

Re: A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
If we're sticking to canon, I was going to suggest setting it during Avatar Kuruk's time. He said himself that he tended to not interfere with things and let people solve their own problems, so it removes the Avatar as a factor. Either that, or just have the Avatar be three, or something.
But let's see how other people want to deal with the Avatar.Originally Posted by Lord Magtok

Re: A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
I would be tentatively interested, as a non-bender of some sort (big surprise there).
I think the period of Avatar Kuruk could be problematic, because we know little of how the world looked like back then... and the world of Avatar, unlike many fantasy worlds, isn't in a cultural and technological stasis.
Also, we'd probably need some more specific situation or place, so as to provide plot hooks. My FFRP characters. Avatar by Ashen Lilies. Sigatars by Ashen Lilies, Gullara and Purple Eagle.

I'd probably make a fire-bending librarian of some sort. The fire-bending is, of course, completely incidental to his being a librarian and only gets used to light candles and heat tea and other such mundane utilities.

I would definitely be interested in something like this. I would probably play some sort of Fire Nation, but it depends on the time period.

Re: A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
Ah, I see. I'll put up a character sheet shortly, then.
As for your question, if there were more than one Avatar at that time, it might explain why Roku knew about the cycle breaking - obviously, if that Avatar were still around, it hadn't happened to them. However, the question of who would be the other avatars does come up.
So much for me being the Badass Normal of the group, then.
I've got a plot idea related to my character which could lead to some other plots, especially since the Fire Nation is looking quite popular.
As for what the world looked like, we can be creative, can't we?Last edited by PurityIcekiller; 2012-05-03 at 08:18 AM.

Re: A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
I don't know if this helps any, but here's some stuff I found on avatar Kuruk that might clear things up:
SpoilerAvatar Kuruk of the Water Tribe is born in the Northern Water Tribe.
Avatar Kuruk tries to kill Koh, the Face Stealer, as revenge for stealing the face of his wife Ummi. This event is confusing to place chronologically, as if Koh's description of the event is taken literally, it would have happened c. 800-700 BSC, over three hundred years before Kuruk's death.[5] Being as Kyoshi was the oldest Avatar at two hundred thirty years of age at death, it is possible that Koh's sense of timing is off, or that time runs differently in the Spirit World.
312 BSC – Year of the Dragon
Avatar Kuruk dies; Avatar Kyoshi of the Earth Kingdom is born.
If no one else wants it, I wouldn't mind being the earth king.
Or a waterbender.
Either would be schweet.Avatar by Ceika. Woot woot

Re: A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
I was thinking of being a Water or Earthbender. As for what they would do; my earthbender would be a traveler seeking adventure. I was thinking of making my waterbender a minstril seeking to find heroes to sing stories about.

Re: A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
Ehm. There's nothing wrong in particular with being the Earth King (though it gives your character a level of power that I find slightly distasteful) but I'd just like to warn from experience that a high level of geographical separation tends to dry up RP pretty quickly as everyone gets stuck alone in their own little corner of the world with no one to interact with.
I agree with Morty that to we either need one specific place (Republic City would be ideal for this, except for the aforementioned 'no airbender' problem unless we're using a non-canon/alt version - Ba Sing Se, as the largest city in the world, could serve as an acceptable alternative if there's no war going on) or some sort of specific goal or plot hook that could bring benders and non-benders from all corners of the globe together.Originally Posted by Lord Magtok

Re: A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
I'll admit that I would prefer some later period for the game; either the early years of the War or the beginnings of Republic City. Mostly because I'd like my character to be a tinker, maybe using a crossbow of his own making - surprisingly enough, we haven't seen any in the series. However, as Kris mentioned, the problem in those cases is lack of airbenders, unless we take liberties with canon...

Re: A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
Why is there a problem? I mean: before the war there were many airbenders, so taking a city like Ba Sing Sei is no problem.
After the war (if we decide on taking Republic city) there could be plenty of airbenders. Remember: Aang has children, who have children. That could be easily 14 airbenders.
Presuming we start 50 years after the Legend of Korra. The world could've 50+ airbenders. The family of Aang (sons/daughters, grandchildren) and a lot of their disciples.
Or am I forgetting something?

Re: A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
I didn't have a problem with Ba Sing Sei. I apologize if I worded that poorly.
RE: Alternate suggestion.
There's no problem with that of course, except that technology doesn't stand still in the Avatar world. Legend of Korra is set in a time period roughly like the 1920s from our world, so 50 years after that would make it the 1970s. If we want our game to take place in a bending world with 1970s style technology, then that's cool; I just thought people would want something closer to the original show(s).Originally Posted by Lord Magtok

Re: A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
Like I've said, my preferred period would be after the War, perhaps in the newly created Republic of Nations. I think it gives us the widest range of options, but the big problem is lack of Airbenders, unless we bend the canon a little.

Re: A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
Hiya! Although I have yet to watch any of the Legend of Korra, I would like to join even if it takes place in that time!
Unless there are spoilers, of course. In which case it would be awfully sad if Koh got loose in your genera vicinitieses.
>_>
<_<
If we are playing during Kyoshi (the 200 years before Sozin's Comet idea) or Kuruk's time, then I think there would actually be crossbows. They are quite the ancient technology in our world and apparently appears in the original show. (Earth Kingdom section).
On that note, if we play during those times, dibs on a Sky Bison! :3Treasured Quotes

Again: Aang has children, who have children. Even if you don't play one of the grandchildren of Aang, you can be a disciple to one of the airbenders.
Sure, there aren't many airbenders, but there are some.
As for me, I'd like a pre-war scenario, like most of the posts I saw until now. I think that's the best way to go.

Re: A:TLAITP: Avatar: The Last Airbender Planning Thread 1
In Korra's time, canonically speaking, there are exactly four airbenders. Tenzin and his three children. Five if you count Korra. In the time period that Morty's suggesting, there are exactly two. Aang and Tenzin (who may not have even been born yet). The Air Acolytes who live on Air Temple Island follow the way of the airbenders, and preserve their culture, but they are not airbenders themselves, and won't be for several generations, assuming that bending can be passed on that way (let's not have this debate here, it took up enough of the thread in the Media section).
Now, of course, given that this is Free Form, if we do choose a Republic City period, we can fudge canon a bit. Like say that there was a secret colony of airbenders who hid out in the mountains during the hundred years of war, and are only now starting to reveal themselves now that the war's over.
Personally, I don't really care what time period we choose, as long as there's some sort of plot or the setting is limited to a single city/area, so everyone isn't scattered to the four winds.Last edited by Ashen Lilies; 2012-05-03 at 11:42 AM.
