    Default OOTS in the Media

This thread is for the collection of mentions of OOTS, GITP, and me personally in media sources, especially as a result of the Kickstarter drive. If you find an article that hasn't been listed yet, post it here. Try to avoid sites that are just reposting material from elsewhere, or personal blogs (unless that blog is a Big Deal), but feel free to list anything older, too.

I'll edit in the best ones back to this post and we should end up with a nice list.

The Washington Post article says you're in Philadelphia, but I thought you resided in Queens, NY.

I did live in Queens when OOTS started. I've just never changed my forum location for some reason. I guess I should do that; once the Washington Post says I live somewhere, who am I to argue?

Rich, to echo some of the comments on the Kickstarter blog, you really did everything right here, you nailed it. I haven't looked in on too many other kickstarter projects, but the ones I've looked at seem fairly static... "Here's our project, here's some rewards. Thanks for pledging." The way you kept the ball rolling, with new and varied rewards, mystery goals, even the entertaining updates and graphs, that's something other project organizers should take note of. The demands that must have been placed on you trying to keep up with comments and emails while trying to arrange new rewards and still produce the webcomic had to have been staggering. Yet throughout it all you never once came across (in my opinion) as "a guy asking for money". You came across as a grateful professional who was busting his ass to reward and entertain his fans and backers.

of course, this is your business, so reap those rewards sir. You deserve it.

Oh and as a suggestion, later in the year when you do another strip-a-day sprint... just save some up ahead of time and don't tell anyone. We'll never know the difference.

Oh and next time... animated gifs.

A pair of stories from Digital Spy, one as the drive was approaching $1M and one after it shattered it. Content is on the light side, but as DS is one of the larger websites in the UK, it probably deserves a mention:

'The Order of the Stick' Kickstarter nears $1m
'Order of the Stick' Kickstarter tops $1 million

I don't know how much of a "Big Deal" VentureBeat is, but it was Big Enough to be captured by Google News for the news article aggragator:

Kickstarter gets its third $1M project in the span of two weeks with Order of the Stick

    ===

Checking some more, I see The Guardian (!), one of the major newspapers in the UK has weighed in (it'll probably be an onlne only mention, but still a hige deal):

Author raises $1m to self-publish Order of the Stick webcomic book

That's all I gots at the moment. Now I'm actually going to go over and see just what the Grauniad has to say about this little drive.

Wish I could take the credit for finding that, but it was Jordan on the TV Tropes forum. And, as he said: that's some clout.

EDIT: Apology to Jordan... I messed up your name, originally. (Should you read this).

What are you talking about? Queens is a borough of New York City and a county in New York State, one of two on Long Island (the other is Brooklyn which is closer to Manhattan, Brooklyn is sometimes known as Kings County but nobody calls it that). Queens is probably one of the most ethnically diverse places in the world; over 150 languages are spoken there.

    Comicsbeat.com has several articles/posts.
    Eg http://www.comicsbeat.com/2012/02/18...n-kickstarter/

And Rich/OOTS is also referred to in this article from 9th Feb, and discussed in its comments (including a comment from Neil Gaiman):
    http://www.comicsbeat.com/2012/02/09...-are-evolving/

Irritatingly, several commenters don't quite have their facts right, and no-one *twitch* has corrected *twitch* them.

Eg this incorrect assumption: "any ad-revenue generated from hits goes directly to him, and not to pirate website owners (MangaFox) or sites hosting the torrents (megaupload- now dead)."
I participated... and I broke it!

From New Zealand, just a brief mention along with an excerpt from the Forbes piece, but I think it is important to note that folks are now pointing to OOTS' Kickstarter success as an indication of important ground breaking trends in publishing. Rich Burlew, Pioneer.

Phew! Good you're able to give this the professional squee it deserves, instead the amateur sqeeing I gave it earlier today.

    Also:

Time for The Globe and Mail to chime in:

Who needs publishers when you can pitch a book on social media?

This was from earlier in the drive, but I think the Boing Boing article might deserve mention as well given its High Profile on the net.

Wizard's might be happy to do so. However, Rich would lucky to have his soul after that.
Yes I know TheGiant has worked on some official D&D books and has had OOTS in Dragon Magazine, but the point is i am sure publishers would give Rich a lot of money, but he would probably lose most of his rights, including the right to sneeze.

I was about to post something along the lines of "Holy s***, The Washington Post and The Guardian?!"

It pales in comparison to this though.
