    Default Mama and Papa bird

A couple of mourning doves have decided to nest right outside our kitchen window, and I've started taking a picture of them when I can. They are currently on their second clutch of eggs at this location, and am going to try to snap the pictures (with may phones camera) as the young birds grow. This is all through the kitchen window so I do not disturb them.

This one was taken a couple days ago, when I had seen that she had returned to the tree she previously occupied.

This one is from this afternoon, when mama flew off (presumably to eat? I don't know much about birds). I'm assuming it's Papa, because it's near the eggs and a different bird than mama.

    They're lovely.

Are you going to spread seeds for them?

Lucky. Ive got nasty loud chirping sparrows or something lodged inside my air conditioner right next to my computer. All day long I get rustling loud chirping, and other assorted noises that drive me nuts. Doves are way quieter.

We actually did buy seed when the first baby birds were old enough to fly, and have started leaving it as close to the tree the nest is in as we're comfortable getting. I'll try to get a picture of the eggs themselves, but only if I chance by it.

Don't put any food around the nest tree ... it might attract predators. The parents will bring the babies food, even after they emerge from the nest.

They cant get in there. Well, maybe a ferret could, but its a really tight space. The ac rests on a window sill, and they are underneath the ac unit, inside the window frame. Last year I had to use a ruler to knock the old nest out of there, because not much else would fit. My hand certainly couldnt. I tried to block it off so we didnt have a repeat, that apparently didnt work.

The location and neighborhood we live in means there really aren't predators. There's a rabbit (whom we've dubbed "Crackers") living under the bushes behind the house with no problem.

I wish I had doves in my yard. All we have are feral cats in the alley, and this chipmunk that throws nut shells into our yard. *shakes fist

    Well, doves are adorable animals.
not when they build a nest on your window so you cant close it.
Put a small dove house when the doves leave. they will build a nest there next time so you can make things easier for them.

Dat tree... i have 2 of those in my yard.

Get a female rat. They are vicious bastards, especially when they've just had pups.

A couple years ago my uncle was lucky enough to have a hummingbird nesting outside his window. This is so rare (hummingbird nests being incredibly hard to find) that a professional bird photographer asked to come and take pictures. Eventually they were put in a book.

Well, apparently Mourning Doves are the most common bird in the United States.

I tried to get another shot, this time of the eggs, but Mama Bird is doing a good enough job that I couldn't get a good look.

Hope nothing bad happened to the birds. Mourning doves may not have exciting plumage but they are still pretty to look at and far more pleasent to listen to than the crows living on the roof of my building.

We have magpies in the Scots Pine outside my window. They should soon have chicks, which means they'll chase the cat when he gets out via the catflap.
