Roni remembers the words of his archery instructors: Breathe slowly--smoothly, and shoot in the space between breaths. In, out, shoot. In, out shoot.

He repeats the last words to himself as a mantra, trying to regulate his breathing and steady his shaking hands. If only it worked...

The desk goes over, Roni readies his bow, Faien readies his blade, Auran readies a prayer, Vaeri readies a spell, and...a few more splinters fly off the door very anticlimactically, but that's it. Three voices spit angry curses in Gobbledegook about the door and how it should get out of their way, but the door politely refuses to budge.

They try a few more thwacks at the door before the manticore barks "Useless! You're all useless!" in a very loud and frustrated tone. "Back, all of you! If you want something done right...." There is a skittering of claws on stone as the manticore moves into position, and then door practically explodes into a cloud of wood fragments.

The manticore's head and shoulders burst into the room and you all can see that it's not just the beast's intelligence that sets it apart from the average specimen of its race. Its head looks basically like a normal manticore head--that of a very ugly, bald old man with a dandruff problem, a mouth four sizes too big, and a scraggly beard you could only get from falling chin-first into a porcupine--but the normal dull golden-orange fur is more of a dim bronze and its smattering of black spots really stands out against the background coat. Its wings (what you can see of them, at least) are similarly darker, and it has three claws at each wing joint instead of one.

That's all the detail anyone can notice before an arrow appears in its shoulder and ice coats its stubby snout. It jerks back and hisses, shaking its head to dislodge the ice before it gets frostbitten. "Don' just sdand dere, you fools!" it shrieks as it starts to back out of the doorway, the ominous rumble of its voice undercut by the fact that the remaining ice makes it sound like a human child with a head cold. "Kill dem! Kill dem all!"

Auran and Faien can each take their readied action against the manticore, then it's the party's turn since the hobs and manticore just spent their turn to bust down the door, so the two of them can effectively act twice in a row and then Roni and Vaeri go again.

Raising his shield against the cloud of splinters, Faien swings upward as soon as the storm passes, swiftly reversing the blade for a second strike across the manticore's face.

Auran hunkered behind the mithril wall that was the magistrate in classic two-man phalanx formation. When the massive head of the beast bore through the dore like a dungeon crashing warforged, the penitent paladin seized the opportunity to bury his gleaming longspear into it's snow-covered snout. Not content with a singular stab, Auran summoned the favor of Bahamut with a holy word in draconic, asking the platinum dragon to guide his weapon into the heart of evil.

Roni peeks over the crest of the desk. He tried to recall the recommended course of action when dealing with a manticore--were they the ones with the thick hides that arrows bounced off of? No, that was the basilisk. Were they the cunning ones that twisted men's minds with their riddles? Couldn't be, that was the sphinx--closer, but still not on point. Perhaps, then, even a smart manticore was dimmer than the dumbest sphinx. He tries to see if he can get a look to the hallway outside the door.

He snaps his fingers, and it pops with a sudden flash. There is a soft sizzling sound coming from the manticore as the granules dig into the skin around its eyes.

Roni casts Glitterdust, centered in the hall to catch goblins and the manticore while excluding his allies. Will save DC 17 to negate. He also uses his blood meditation of Bahamut to deal (2d6)[8] damage to the manticore.

Dark purplish blood stains the fur around the manticore's face and neck after Faien and Auran's excellent teamwork leaves it with a few extra holes in its head. It growls angrily at Faien's jibe: "Zilenze, worm! Id is nod your plaze do cridizize, only do die!" Once again its haughty demeanor is undercut by the damage to its snout; with all the blood and ice, its growl sounds more like someone blowing his nose.

The manticore sees the blue streak of Vaeri's spell coming and raises a wing to bat the oncoming orb out of the way; the movement blocks its view just long enough for Roni to cast his own spell without the manticore or hobgoblins seeing who cast it. "Grah!" yelps the manticore as the tiny glowing particles burn its eyes, though not enough to blind it. "Crozzbowgobz, dake oud dat Lady-damned mage! Da rezd ob you, kill de warriorz!"

The manticore carefully backs out of the doorway, wings raised to fend off any attacks; it sways back and forth slightly as it does so, as befits someone who just took massive amounts of cranial trauma, but its eyes are still alert for any sign of danger. Once it's out of the way, a handful of hobgoblins leap to carry out its orders, but the rest are too busy rubbing the sparkles out of their eyes to be much help. Even the unaffected goblins are less than effective as a crossbow bolt clatters uselessly against the heavy desk shielding Vaeri and a battleaxe blow from the nearest hob only barely manages to hit a vulnerable spot in Auran's breastplate.

Shoving the hobgoblin's weapon out of the way with his shield, Faien looks at him with a hint of tired contempt. "And what are you, hm? Another mere bandit, content to serve the coward Koth's will?"

Roni pulls another bow from his quiver and sends it straight through the doorway, over the tip of the manticore's wings, and straight toward the farthest hobgoblin. However, between the furniture, the doorway, and the larger creature between them, it seemed a longshot. Luckily for Roni, longshots were something of a specialty for him.

Roni's arrow sails over the manticore's shoulder and buries itself in the shoulder of one of the crossbow-bearing hobgoblins. The hobgoblins, still blinded by his spell and frantically attempting to rub the painful particles out of its eyes, doesn't see it coming. "Aaargh! Hac rhak! Mül rhak!?" he shouts, his voice cracking as he grabs the arrow and tries to pull it out. "Drugekh! Kägaan olul!" the only un-blinded crossbowgob snaps at him, and trains his crossbow on what he can see of Roni past the doorway and his leader's massive bulk. He launches a bolt at the best angle he can, but with everything in the way he just barely nicks Roni and doesn't even draw any blood.

Closer to the door, the only battleaxe-wielding hobgoblin who can still see steps over his fallen comrade's body into the door way and brings his weapon down on Faien's armor with a loud clang. Faien, as usual, seems no worse for wear, and the angry hobgoblin snarls and settles into a solid stance, ready to continue whaling on the seemingly invulnerable magistrate who insulted his brethren...but he won't ever get the chance. The manticore raised its wings to fend off Vaeri's darts of ice, which just resulted in it having three bloody gashes in its wings instead of its face, and now it's had enough. With a shake of its head and a loud snort the manticore knocks away all the ice shards from its face, and then it roars "Enough playing! Time for you pitiful worms to die!"

The manticore takes a deep breath...and keeps breathing in, and in, and in. The hobgoblin between it and the doorway opens its eyes wide and tries to scramble out of the way, but he is too slow as a gout of a foul-smelling black tarry substance erupts from the manticore's throat towards the doorway. The disgusting substance blasts its way through the doorway--melting the doorframe as it goes--to land all over Faien and Auran, dissolve most of Koth's heavy desk, and shower Roni and Vaeri with the last sizzling bits of it.

Caught off-guard by the unexpected nature of the attack, Faien has no time to get out of the way, managing only to get his shield in front of his face. While this keeps him from being blinded, it exposes the rest of his body, and the numerous layers of protection he prepared to defend himself against a hobgoblin raiding force do nothing against the breath of a manticore. Mithral tarnishes and flesh burns, his breath hissing out in a rush as he tries to keep his feet in the face of the pain.

He could not let the creature do that again. Pushing himself forward in the wake of the attack, he brings the blade down on the beast's exposed jaw, counting on its quite reasonable expectations that the acid would have felled a lesser warrior - as the corpse in front of him attests.

The acid burned, but the pain only fueled the paladin's resolve. Any moment now Koth might return, and while they were holding their own surprisingly well, they couldn't sustain under this kind of punishment for much longer. Chari lets out a moan of pain as the creature's breath sears away at her already wounded flesh. Wobbling, she blinks several times before looking back up over the desk and sending a series of magic missiles toward the manticore.

The young sorcerer doesn't look good at all.

Roni's also looking the worse for wear, but that doesn't keep him from playing tough. "Keep your head down, sis," he lovingly scolds. "Don't want you getting hurt now, do we?" He mutters a command word under his breath and touches his hand over Vaeri's wounds. They begin to close up, but Roni does an awful job disguising a wince as he touches her with his raw, burnt hand.

Vaeri looks up at her brother and gives him a shaky smile. "I think we're a little late for that, but thanks." She knows that Roni knows the thanks is as much for the healing as the advice. She takes a deep breath.

The manticore hisses in pain and jerks its head back as Faien's strike leaves a long gash on its snout, causing Auran's follow-up thrust to just barely miss. Missing is not a problem for Vaeri's spell, however, and three bolts of arcane power zigzag around the two warriors to strike the manticore in its already-mangled face. It stumbles back a step and growls, "You pitiful worms shouldn't...shouldn't be able to...graaargh!"

It ducks its head and wings suddenly, and a whip-crack of its tail sends a volley of spikes whistling towards Faien and Auran. Between Faien in front of him and the dripping remains of the doorframe on either side, Auran is well-protected from the spikes, but one of those directed at Faien manages to find a gap in his armor "Now kill them, you useless idiots!" the manticore cries. Its minions, however, seem reluctant to comply: the crossbow-wielding hobgoblins are frantically reloading their weapons, the axe-wielding hobs don't appear very eager to engage anyone who can send a mighty manticore all but running away, and all of them start edging towards the doorways out of this room.

Faien takes the sole spike that managed to penetrate his armour in his shield hand, tossing its unbloodied end dismissively to the ground. "A good commander does not give orders beyond his forces' capability."

A faint red tracery in fractal branches grows over the blade of his sword, and Faien strikes at the manticore's head once more, his blade moving more smoothly than before.

"How dare you insult--" the manticore snarls, but Faien's precise swing cuts off its words...and most of its neck. "Wha--?" it wheezes, most of its breath escaping through the hole in its throat. "But you...you're just...pathetic...you're all...." The beast flops to the ground as the light leaves its eyes, believing to the last that it couldn't possibly lose to a mere handful of pitiful humanoids.

Silence reigns for a moment, before those hobgoblins who can still see grab those who can't and they all back out of the room in as orderly a retreat as they can manage. Once they break line of sight, you all can hear them turn around and run across the center courtyard, yelling at the top of their lungs that the manticore has been defeated.

Stepping forward, Faien thrusts his blade through the manticore's eye, withdrawing it with a jerk and planting the tip in the ground. Only then does he allow himself to give into the pain and lean on the sword, the acid burns healing but slowly. "One more victory," he says softly. "But they are not broken yet, nor will they be until we reach Koth. Cautious he may be, but he is not an ineffectual leader."

"Are we even in a position to take Koth anymore? These two," Auran gestured at the mangled corpses of both minotaur and manticore, "did not know when they should have retreated. I'm honestly surprised that Koth did not order the manticore to come at us from the roof while his minotaur distracted us. We held one front, but would not have been able to defend two. Manticore's are deadliest when they can attack from the air, at a distance."

    Auran looked to the magistrate.

"The wand's healing magic is still in effect, but it will take several more minutes to bring us back to full strength. Do we have that kind of time? Let us not make the same mistake that these two did."

Any that seem not completely ruined, she quickly gathers up and stuffs into her pack. "Do we perhaps try to continue the deception? Clearly the Goddess is on my side if we were able to defeat Koth's underlings." A subtle hint of sarcasm ruins through her words. Is it possible that we could exit here in boldness and convince the rest of Koth's followers to turn on him?

Vaeri knows that her idea is probably not the wisest but she is surprised to be alive and figures that so long as Aasterinian favors her, they may as well continue.

"Koth himself filled the room with webs," Faien points out. "The manticore could not have attacked from above. Moreover, that caution is his flaw. He sends small groups because he wishes to keep his options open - can he retreat if we prevail, or wear us down if we do not? Can he rid his forces of two powerful malcontents that threaten his authority?"

Letting his blade fade away, he tilts his head toward the main gate. "I do not think we can leave and maintain our image with Koth's underlings. But let us open that gate, if it is unguarded. The Captain may wish a chance to join us."

"Hydraspit," Roni curses at Auran's suggestion with all the vim and vigor of a much less acid-burned spellscale. "The Quickwings don't back down." Lie. Roni had backpeddled, weaseled out, withdrawn, given up, thrown in the towel, waved the white flag, cried uncle, and begged for mercy more times in a month than some heroes had in their entire life. But for some reason he couldn't quite place his finger on, this time was different. "We have the advantage. We've cast our spells? So has Koth. We're wounded and need to heal? So does Koth. The only difference is, we haven't lost a single piece in this game. He's lost a handful of pawns and two ugly bishops."

"Leave 'em, sis," Roni smirks at Vaeri as she tries to gather up the salvageable documents. "Got 'em all in here," he says with a quick tap on his noggin. At Vaeri's suggestion, he arches his eyebrows. "Viva la revolucion," he says to himself. The gears start turning in Roni's head, and he asks Vaeri, "you got any strong magic left, sis? Anything with some real razzle-dazzle?"

It's clear that ideas are swimming in Roni's mouth like sharks in a feeding frenzy, each desperate to chomp at the morsel that lays just outside his lips. Before he lets any of them out, though, a small archaic syllable and a flick of the wrist sneak out. He makes a quick scan of the room, just in case Koth was lingering in hiding or using a divination spell on the room.

Roni casts Detect Magic. Assuming he detects no curious magic, the post continues...

At Faien's suggestion to open the gates, Roni's voice drops to a whisper. "Here's what I'm thinking: we take a few to lick our wounds. Vaeri starts the show by casting something with pizzazz, getting 'oohs' and 'aahs' from the peanut gallery while mentioning something about Koth being unfaithful to the Goddess. As part of the show, she marches to the gate and opens it, ostensibly offering the gobs something Koth never has: a choice. Either they can leave and live in freedom or stay and join in the Goddess' retribution against Koth. Then, we find Koth and kill him. Only problem, he could walk out the open gate. But there's always going to be at least one problem, and the only way to beat a cautious opponent is by throwing caution to the wind. Luckily, that happens to be my speciality." Roni places his hands on his hips and beams with pride; if it wasn't for the fact that he was whispering, it would almost seem as if he was pausing for anticipated applause. The boy was truly a legend in his own mind.

Both Roni's and Vaeri's searches are unsuccessful: The only magic Roni detects in the room is the remnants of Koth's web spell a few feet above his head, and not a single scrap of paper was left after the manticore's breath dissolved most of the desk.

    Vaeri skims through her head.

I've got a color spray...it's well, colorful. Not much use against Koth but could take out a few of the gobs. And more ice related spells. She steps around the ruins of the desk and dusts herself off.

We should all heal, should there be any left, before we walk out.

She does take a quick moment to open her pack and pulls out a robe of blue. Sliding it over her black clothes, it serves the purpose to emphasize the blue in her skin and eyes. Perhaps enough to help her bluff the gobs.

Auran withdrew his wand, and continued his ministrations. For every time it was used, one of the tiny green buds along the branch wilted and fell off, giving it's lifeforce to the recipient.
