Oh my gosh, I don't know! This is something I think about a lot! Diamonds really are very pretty and interesting, but they're artificially expensive and many are unethically sourced. The diamond industry is a monopoly, so they just store up all the excess diamonds so as not to saturate the market.

I like gems. I'd like one that has a story, that I knew where it came from, y'know? I could have a picture of the area (volcano or former mountain belt, most likely) that it came from and a diagram of its formation. If I had a ruby I would insist upon calling it a ruby-red sapphire, because rubies are only red sapphires. Blue gem-quality aluminium oxide? Sapphire. Yellow? Sapphire. Transparent? Sapphire. Even pink? Sapphire. Red gem-quality aluminium oxide? Ruby, for some reason!

Most minerals are too soft to wear every day.

It would be cool to have a chip of a fine-grained rock, like a rhyolite or a basalt, or maybe peridotite. If you were going to have peridotite, though, you could just have the gem peridot.

There are lots of options, is what I'm getting at here.

(My father knows a guy who worked for a mining company mining something else, and happened to come across a diamond, as there were trace diamonds in the mine but not enough to be worth mining. So he was allowed keep it and he had it set into a ring for his girlfriend who agreed to marry him on the top of a mountain on being presented with the ring. That's pretty amazing.)

Do you mean what happened to it in its rock life or in its human life?

Rock life: sounds like it grew slowly into an empty (empty of rock, not vacuum) space in a silicate rock. It grew from silica-bearing warm fluid passing through or trapped there. As it grew from the fluid, the fluid's composition changed. The violet end has something besides silica (silicon and oxygen) in it, not sure what, likely iron or some trace elements. So either the fluid went from pure to less pure or the other way.

Or! Maybe it was irradiated! I'm not sure if that would work that way, but you can make quartz into amethyst that way.

That's probably demisexuality. Musashi would be the one to explain that, if I remember rightly. I might be that but I'm basically aromantic too, so I don't get many opportunities to find out.

You are looking at it from the geologist's angle. From a gem angle, rubies are pretty unique. They're a lot harder to find with saturated hue and without inclusions than sapphires, which is why you have to be far more scrutinizing over rubies than sapphires about artificial treatments when buying.

Blue sapphires, on the other hand, are hard to find in a light hue. They tend to be clearer, but too dark, so the blue doesn't pop like in a good specimen. Same compound different impurity, perhaps, but it's a wholly other creature from the gem angle. They have different tendencies, obstacles, and different kinds of beauty enough to justify a separate name.

Sapphires other than blue are generally called "fancy sapphires," to distinguish them, and there is another yellow-pink species with its own name, the padparadsha.
