"Caltrops? Those things that work by hurting your feet when you step on them? And you thought they would be useful in the water, where things tend to neither step nor have feet?"
Sel remains holding firmly onto the mast.
"I can see why you get along well with the guy who seems interested in trying to flirt with a people famous for drowning horny sailors."
It's juuust possible the water portion of this journey is making her a liiiitle grumpy.

Re: 3.5 Political Adventure [IC]
Caladeran smiled to himself, glad that at least one other found Aquarius' response more than a little strange. While the wizard cloaked most of his actions under the auspice of 'mysterious ways,' they often left the elf wondering as to the man's sanity. Still, he had proven fairly trustworthy so far, if not always particularly helpful.
Glancing back at Selena, he leaned against a pile of crates, wondering how many days this journey would take.Life is ... life. As always bot/cut as necessary.

Re: 3.5 Political Adventure [IC]
Drown? Ivor wondered. Hmm. Maybe better to work on the crew instead. This Sel person seems bristly.
Ivor made a mental note to guard his words around her until they'd gotten to know each other better.Last edited by redzimmer; 2013-02-12 at 05:55 PM.

Re: 3.5 Political Adventure [IC]
Without even looking at her, Aquarius gave a taught laugh and responded. "You are correct Selena, normaly Caltrops are stood on, but they are also normaly stationary. The merfolk will be moving around in the water, dragging the caltrops in, well, the drag, as any child at the beech can proove. This means the caltrops are constantly moving, and will thus find their way into sensative spots, face, hands and, ahem, genatalia. Still dubious?"

Re: 3.5 Political Adventure [IC]
Even as Aquarius is finishing his detailed description of the damage that caltrops could do to merfolk, the thrashing behind them ceases. At the same time the creature Cal was watching moves further from the boat before rising up half out of the water. The creature loads its crossbow and then fires a bolt.
The missile strikes the hull of the boat and there is a pause as the sailors become aware of the merman, and then suddenly more heads pop up from the water.
There are 15 merfolk, all to the starboard side of the ship.

Caladeran shook his head, then looked at Aquarius. "Not dubious, but wondering why."
He waited for one of the more 'eloquent' folk to engage the merfolk, since his own diplomatic skills usually came across as brusque.Life is ... life. As always bot/cut as necessary.

Sel continued hugging the mast, watching the guardrail, not just where everyone else was clustered, but the other side as well.
"Slimy buggers won't drown me!"

"Is anyone interested in diplomacy first?" Ivor asks.
He then casts (or attempts to with his encumbering armour) true strike.

"Maybe if we just ignore them they'll go on their way... "
Rocked by the waves, Sel shot a slightly grumpy look at Aquarius, who seemed intent on preparing for battle.

"Well I didn't know there were Merfolk in these waters, and those caltrops didn't cost more than some of my mental focus. Had I known, I wouldn't have bothered, but who's to say I got us into this mess? They could have attacked on their own."

"Never mind me, I dislike boats. Can you think of something that would stand as a peace offering? We got any fish? Or would fish people consider that cannibalism? Wait, if they got out to hunt I'd know a lot more about them... they must eat in the water, so fish should be good."

Re: 3.5 Political Adventure [IC]
"I'll attempt diplomacy then," Ivor says.
He pointedly in plain view of the merfolk holds up his bow and throws it to the deck.
Then, on a lark, he tosses two of his remaining gold into the water directly at one of them.

Re: 3.5 Political Adventure [IC]
Ivor's gold coins fly true and are caught by a female merfolk who carries a coral staff. She inspects them, and then in a cold, stormy voice answers; "This will not placate us, man."
One sailor runs past Selena and she hears him say; "Not again, not again..."

Re: 3.5 Political Adventure [IC]
"You have stolen from us, men."" The woman intones, responding to Cal, and a male merfolk waves a hand to cause flames ot leap up in the rigging and sails above the humans (and elf).
Sel flies past the frightened sailor, but he responds to her question all the same: "They've been following us for days. I thought we'd lost them when we got to port. We always out ran them before."
The captain calls out orders for the sailors to douse the flames and for others to take up weapons against the mermen, though none seem eager.

Ivor the Sly
Ivor makes a subtle gesture and attempted to charm the ship's captain into being more forthcoming.
"Dear Captain," he intones conspiratorially, "surely if we know the details of these inhuman beasts' grievance, we can more certainly aid you?"

Re: 3.5 Political Adventure [IC]
Sel remains on her back on the deck.
You know, the sky looks nice from here, I could almost pretend to be in a hammock. In a hammock in a burning tree that is.
Sel enters the space of mind she uses to control flames and begins moving the lowest sections of flame away from their fuel then letting them wink out. She concentrates on places the few firefighting sailors look like they are ignoring. Torch sized section of flame leave the mast, like butterflies.

The flames stop growing, but they still rage fearsomely above you. Ivor is struck by falling debris and takes 1 damage.
The captain turns to the barbarian sorcerer with a grimace: "I hae no idea what it is they're asking for, but my friend in the city said you could fight, so you better get to it: none of you looks like you can swim back to land from here!"
To Aquarius the Merwoman intones: "Four pearls lost to us for years but found once more."

Caladeran glared at the Captain, then stomped off to find the sailor that had ran from Sel originally. His chain held at the ready, he pointed a finger at the man. "You, the nervous one! What do you know? Answer, or you'll die before the sails burn out!"
