Re: League of Legends XXXII: Cupcakes and Kittens and Squirrels. Oh my!
MPen works on Udyr because his damage is Magic. its not ideal, but it works. Assuming a limited number of pages...
@Galio: What I've done when I solo him top is get a catalyst, second focus Bulwark and get Mana regen Yellows. Movespeed is probably not ideal, but might swing an advantage if you play him top versus a AD bruiser. Someone like Olaf or Riven.
My default page right now is all MR except my Yellows which are Health/Level. It only took me a while to realize how genius Froggen is. #1 counter to burst mages.
I haven't played brand in Summoner's Rift. I remember when he was FOTM Chauster was rumored to run Move Speed on him. I believe this might or might not have been when everyone suddenly realized that Move Speed Quints were really good (this might have had something to do with countless nerfs to things like Dorans and Flat HP stacking). So I dunno.
I'm still getting Lifesteal Quints, MR Quints, Armor Quints, Energy Regen Seals & Gold/10 Seals Finally finished my Spellvamp Quints & Mana-Lvl Yellows tho. Then I'm probably set until the next set of rune changes tho (aside from the potential Health Regen Quints tho I have no clue where to find the runepages necessary to run those; I have 17 and I can barely fit half of the pages I want as it stands).
I'm pretty sure don't have mana/level Yellows. I have HP/lvl, manaregen/lvl and flat armor. That's all I use...

Re: League of Legends XXXII: Cupcakes and Kittens and Squirrels. Oh my!
Energy Regen Seals are basically only worth it on Kennen. For everyone else it's a trade-off but Kennen is a ridiculously safe long-range non-mana mage with some spammability issues in especially longer fights later on, so he loses very little by not having defensive yellows like armor or health-level (I even own MR yellows) and the energy regen seals (I think Ego Ignaxio runs two flats and seven scalings currently and, for all his weirdness, he's probably the most dedicated Kennen-player on the planet so he probably knows his ****) cover that issue (and indeed, since you can't itemize energy regen and Blue also gives you CDR thus increasing your energy consumption, they're pretty much the only way to actually rectify the excess consumption Kennen suffers of unless penta-stunning).
Mana/Level Yellows are what I use on Ryze. I go Mana/Level and Flat Mana Quints for simple all-game-long enhancement to damage and sustainability. I have a page with Move Speeds too but I find myself wanting the punch more than the Move Speed on some lanes (I use Ryze only as a counterpick myself so due to the way I deploy him, generic competence takes a second place to function in those specific cases; I also run him 0/21/9 so I get full 5% Move Speed from Masteries).
EDIT: Scratch that, he uses 5 Flats 4 Scalings currently. Shen probably wants his Armor or Health; both are nutty stats in-demand on him so I'd really not look to getting Energy there.
I own Mana Regen/Levels but I haven't used 'em since the nerfs. I've found defensive stats simply more valuable. Also, I've stopped finding myself needing them on basically anyone (tho of course, having more mana regen enables a more aggressive style; still Meditation + Expanded Mind seems to solve almost all mana problems nowadays).Last edited by Eldariel; 2012-04-23 at 08:44 PM.

I'm not sure, I think I copied Jiji's page when I used health/level. Either way its the runes i have so mana/level blues health/level yellows.
I suppose I could go ahead and go mana/level yellows and flat MR Blues, but I already have flat MR Reds. Speaking of which, I'm glad I realized you can do flat MR reds. Its really nice.

I play Ryze and just use a basic AP runepage for him. Of course, I haven't played Ryze in a while because mid is incessantly called first.
Ryze is never played for the same reason that Annie/Nunu/Sivir/Ashe/Master Yi are never played: 450 champs, for some reason, aren't considered good. I mean, yeah, Annie's outclassed by some mids, but that doesn't mean she still can't stomp soloqueue. A full Tibbers stun is frightening, quite frankly.

If you can get Ryze in botlane and give him the chance to farm, he can have some fun. I think he might have particular synergy with Soraka. If you land the snare, that's a free Starcall+infuse, combined with your combo... it seems like it could be fun.
Especially since snares and silences counter Alistar.

Re: League of Legends XXXII: Cupcakes and Kittens and Squirrels. Oh my!
I don't know what level of play you're at, but right now, I very very rarely see Ryze. In fact, Ryze was one of my mains from level 15-30, but I only ever saw a single Ryze between those levels, who I stomped because he didn't really know how to play Ryze, as simple as it is.
People don't seem to understand that Nunu is generally a support champ nowadays, even if he can jungle. I don't see him ever. The last time I saw him was quite a few games ago as a jungler. He stole my blue, but none of my team really needed it (Vlad mid, Shen top, Lee Sin jungle), so he just annoyed bot lane.
I'll give the Ashe one to you, but even then, I don't see her all that often anymore. She was only really played often before I was level 30. Even then, I wasn't particularly impressed with the Ashe players. Right now, Graves seems to be really popular, judging from the last games I've played.

Nunu is underplayed compared to Soraka. But then again, soraka is pretty much the "lolhealz" support champion that everyone likes to play.
Ryze is... underplayed at 1300-1400 elo ranked solo queue North America. People play... I dunno. I don't really pay attention. I just play stupid tanky champions so Ryze obviously has to be on the list somewhere (morde, galio, vlad, ryze... thats about it yeah?)

Ryze is tanky, reliable, and easy to play. Just about all the competitive AP mids have a Ryze in their lineup, for the same reason that most of the competitive AD carries have an Ashe in their lineup, and all the competitive tops (sans Hotshot) have Vlad in their lineup.

Re: League of Legends XXXII: Cupcakes and Kittens and Squirrels. Oh my!
West does seem to like Ryze but I wouldn't say he's hugely popular, probably above average. Most games seem to have a Graves in. Oddly i've not really noticed an increase in the number of Kog's i've faced since IPL, or Corki for that matter.
I have been playing a bit of Corki recently and Corki/Soraka as an end game team is just insane. I'm starting to rate Soraka really highly if the player behind the champ knows what they're doing. The effective health they give the carry between E and R, in addition to something like Locket if they're running it, can easily sway a teamfight by giving the carry that little bit longer.

Funny. If I'm forced to AD in Ranked without Duo I demand for a support Soraka, not because I consider her particularly better than any other support but because Soraka is the most forgiving support; you can screw up however much you want, long as you heal and silence/give mana, you're going to do your part on lane (can focus on winning the lane when I don't have to worry about my support doing dumb stuff as a reaction to my aggression and getting himself killed).

That and a more or less infinite mana Corki/Graves can force most other champs out of lane, while picking up all/most of the cs, unless they can provide a similar level of sustain to counter you.
Having a carry not strictly limited by mana is just absurd in the amount of damage they can provide in an extended trade.

Eh, it's still possible to deal with it with range or just ways to delay the damage; most traditional lanes can lane against that. That said, it is extremely strong. Ezreal/Soraka is personal favorite since those Mystic Shots will start landing eventually. Also, Urgot/Soraka is absolutely brutal.

Re: League of Legends XXXII: Cupcakes and Kittens and Squirrels. Oh my!
Totally agree on the Ez/Soraka.
At my elo most people can't cope with it, I am fairly certain i've not lost a lane with a competant Soraka support because you can really press home any advantage you get because, as you said, mistakes don't punish you like they do in other lanes.
One thing i'm struggling with at the moment, that I never really had problems with before, is Janna ults. Specifically teamfighting. I've landed some really good ones that have split their team in the jungle but frequently I find that it would probably do more harm than good. Specifically when playing a carry if you have yourself in a position that you are doing damage you rarely want a Janna ult messing that up.
Of course if they all jump someone, or Kennen/Fiddle/Wukong type ults come in on your team, then blowing it does a world of good but outside of that is there anything people look for to try and get that clutch Janna ult to win a game?

Re: League of Legends XXXII: Cupcakes and Kittens and Squirrels. Oh my!
The problem is, even an infinite mana character can be outtraded. Forcing trades on cooldown to abuse you infinite mana means that if you don't trade well with that mana, you'll be out of health before the other guy is out of mana. Therefore, no real mana advantage. If you wait and only take advantage of good trades, you'll likely have mana enough, anyway.
Granted, Corki trades fairly well, but Caitlyn and Kog'Maw can really put a damper on things.

Re: League of Legends XXXII: Cupcakes and Kittens and Squirrels. Oh my!
Question: I've recently bought Hecarim and am trying to figure out a good tune page set up/ build order. As of right now I have MR glyphs, Armor seals, and Armor pen marks. As of right now I have 2.25 attack damage Quints and 5 falt AP quint on him aswell but I intend to replace them with 2% movement speed Quints. My build order is Boots + 2 HP pots and 1 MP pot (If i'm solo top, if I'm bot then I keep the gold for the next item) afterwards I build Boots 3 then sheen + zeal into Tri Force. Afterwards I build a FoN and then either a Phantom Dancer (If I'm carrying hard) a Maw of Malmortius (If the enemy is fed) and or a burning cape. Any suggestions for how I can improve my Hecarim?

Re: League of Legends XXXII: Cupcakes and Kittens and Squirrels. Oh my!
I see your point but I wouldn't say I ever trade on cooldown mainly because my infinite mana claim is more or less incorrect as you can and do run out of mana. I do agree totally that attacking on cooldown would more likely than not leave you either overexposed or at the very least just fighting battles for the sake of it.
But if you can push them towards the realms of not having mana for trades or at the very least having to save their mana exclusively for trading rather than last hitting or escaping then with Soraka's healing you can usually come out ahead in the long run.
Would be interesting to see a Diffender blog on support sustain as I do wonder whether Soraka would come out on top if you look at healing alone. Maybe looking at how long it would take them to top off a carry if they took X damage every 30 seconds, though factoring in resistances and the like would make this a royal pain.

What would you thinkof a summoner spell that is entirely a passive effect, no active bonus? Or one that just greatly boosts your other summoner spell?

Re: League of Legends XXXII: Cupcakes and Kittens and Squirrels. Oh my!
Don't build for the passive. It's nice, but it's not a big enough return on investment to justify building Movespeed over anything else- most notably, don't do Boots 3. The extra 20 points of move converts to a mere 5 points of AD at level 18 (pre-percentile movement bonuses), which is entirely not worth giving up the benefits of any of the other upgraded boots. (Bobility, on the other hand, can be decent as it is for most characters if you're doing a roaming/screw the jungle, I Have Ganks thing. That + Devastating Charge lets you hit a lane at Rammus-like speeds.)
TriForce is a good item for Hecarim, but be careful about rushing it. I'd go Sheen and Phage, which are both independently good for him, and then start building to enemy/consider the game; if things are already going well, you can finish out the TriForce and use it to push your advantage. If not, start building to address whatever the problem seems to be.

Amusing thought: remember those staged videos of boots/5x phantom dancer Rammus with Zilean/Sivir/Galio/etc getting up to 6000+ move speed?
This is something that needs to be made happen with Hecarim.

Re: League of Legends XXXII: Cupcakes and Kittens and Squirrels. Oh my!
So on a whim I finally downloaded League of Legends. I also watched a few livestreams from the DotA 2 beta. So far I like League better. Anyway.
I'm currently playing Ashe and Victor mostly. I'm not getting my teeth completely kicked in, but I'm having fun all the same. I enjoy Ashe's hit and run tactics, I enjoy Victor for his Gravity Well + Death Ray.
Is there a good place to research build order for items? I feel I would take care of my purchases more effectively if I had a list. I'm also not entirely sure if I'm taking the right stuff or if there is a more optimal approach.~~Courage is not the lack of fear~~

Re: League of Legends XXXII: Cupcakes and Kittens and Squirrels. Oh my!
Generally, it's a good idea to have an idea of what you want to build, but not stick to it too much. If the enemy team is doing well, check what type of damage they deal (easier after the new NUMBARS EVRYWAR thing) and build some resistances.
Let's say you're Viktor, for example, and the enemy Ashe is doing particularly well. You might want to build a Zhonya's Hourglass, as it gives you defense against her in the form of armor as well as more AP.
Items are also a big taste thing, especially starting ones. Some people start with Doran's X, others with Boots of Speed and potions, others with things like Faerie Charm + 2 Vision Wards. Your team role determines this, in part, but your playstyle is a lot of this. Don't be afraid to experiment and find what works out the best for you. As you climb levels, things will change, and by level 30 there are some things that are incredibly common that you will be disadvantaged without (Flash the summoner spell is one of these. Many, many people play with it - I don't, though, and at times the lack of it is quite problematic.).
Another thing to remember is that many guides and the like are based on level 30 play. Level 30 means more runes, more masteries and more experience. Adjust to the experience of your opponents (for example, leading a skillshot ahead of someone who doesn't dodge will result in missing, but not doing so against people who are will do the same) and remember that not every strategy and tactic in a guide will really apply to you.
For the most part, you'll just want to play, gain experience, and find out what works for you. If you can identify a problem you have, you're already quite a bit ahead of a lot of players.

Depends on the boost. For a passive effect, that passive better either scale, or be something that is valuable the entire game (MS team buff ala janna comes to mind).
For boosting the other summoner spell.....I dunno. I can't imagine that making flash either longer/shorter cooldown is worth the lack of ignite/exhaust and vice versa unless the boost is game breaking in which case NO.

Solomid is probably more reliable; Mobafire has fluctuating quality while at least the guides by the pro-gamers on Solomid tend to be reliable (when not trolly). For many champions, exact builds vary from game to game too.
Ashe can do fairly reliable:
Boots + Potions
Doran's Blade (2-3 as necessary)
Berserker Greaves
Infinity Edge
Phantom Dancer
Though. Add a lone Vampiric Sceptre somewhere in there if you have gold leftover; Lifesteal is good. Then you just get Last Whisper, Bloodthirster and defensive item of choice (generally Guardian Angel, Banshee's Veil or Quicksilver Sash depending on what's killing you, if any).Campaign Journal: Uncovering the Lost World - A Player's Diary in Low-Magic D&D (Latest Update: 8.3.2014)

Lolpro.com (I think that's... Curst's site?) is also reasonably good. I prefer solomid guides right now though, they tend to have better detail, and a larger writing community.
Itemization is something that I've started to take for granted, after playing for a while. Different champions have different stats they scale with, and thus different "ranges" of useful items. Once you know the good items within that range for each champion, and know what you need to accomplish with your items (need MR, health, armor, more damage, lane sustain), you can pick items that accomplish that goal.

Re: League of Legends XXXII: Cupcakes and Kittens and Squirrels. Oh my!
Vampiric Scepter is usually my starter, followed by a dagger for attack speed, followed by chain armor. Then I start working up those trees to other objects of badassery. I was using Dorians Shield as my first item but I found that early lifesteal to be valuable.
Either way, I'll look stuff up tonight. Thanks a bunch.~~Courage is not the lack of fear~~
