Except for the 30 seconds or so when the brain still has oxygen to function. I'd imagine it'd be utter agony. Also, if the head is in wrong, it can get stuck in say the jaw bone, like ex-King Louis XVI.

That's a bit of a tangled one. Though no one has done experiments for awhile (at least not legally), there are a few camps on the topic just by reasoning through the problem. The current camps are:

    1) Oh yeah, dude's dead.

    2) It's possible, however unlikely, that the blade of the guillotine is so fast that some individuals do not pass out do to shock, so theoretically they'd be conscious until their brain runs out of oxygen in 6-13 seconds.

I'm not quite sure about this. Oxygen deprivation, like the kind that would be caused by a lack of circulation, causes dizziness and not pain, and massive trauma has been known to cause numbness rather than intense, searing pain. If you did feel the pain, you would probably pass out rather than experience the agony due to the trauma of the experience, dying relatively painlessly.

EDIT: I also wish to note that if I did have to die, I would definitely choose death by Guillotine over the Electric Chair or the Lethal Injection. Aside from being (probably) less painful, it would be a better spectacle, and my family would get a neat decoration if they chose to keep my skull.

I have to agree with you there. Although, one french doctor who lived during the Reign of Terror(whose name escapes me) was able to blink 11 times before dying, so it is possible. I guess we don't really know enough about having our heads chopped off to make a definite conclusion, though I would think people would be right about it going numb instead. As tax:

Blinking happens mainly reflexively though, so that's an alternative explanation. Personally though, I don't want to test it.
