Well, since half-votes are a thing...

I'd like half to go to Elli and half to go to Karen. Maria's adorable and super-sweet, but I'm really the most okay with her being in the Just-Friends area, especially considering Harris.

(I'm also considering bribing you to make save states once the events are all over, so you can do alternate histories where you marry each of them. But I don't think you'd want to do that.)

She did allow a threesome in Moemon, so who knows, maybe she'll allow the harem ending in this LP.

At this point? I'd fully support a three-way harem ending with Karen, Elli, and Maria. Possibly even Ann to make it a four-way harem.

Because Poupouri is too perfect for Grey.

...Karen may also possibly be excluded because purple hat guy.

The problem with that is that marriage is a thing in this game, and a thing I intend to show off. And it is sadly a 1:1 thing. And then there are rival marriages and babies and stuff, which I also intend to show off to the best of my ability...
In other words, the game does not want me to Harem. Sorry.

Nor do I want to construct, in essence, 3 or 4 alternate LPs, taking us from confession scene to wedding to babies to end-game.

Edit: Though, now that I've thought about it...I would be OK with showing some alternate confession scenes, since that just takes some cheating (or can be done legit, but the cheating way is easier). And some of them are really sweet, cute, or funny. That, and I don't even remember Popuri's, and the Japanese video I have of them all intriques me.

Notice that Deme objected on logistical grounds and not principle grounds. This is proof that she doesn't love her adoring fans back. Because if she did, she would play 5 games in parallel (hacking 4 of them to match the first to avoid needless work), showed what could have happened to each of the five girls in dream sequences (marrying Fox or marrying the rival), and then writing out all 32 possible endings (bachelor forever Fox, marrying one of the girls (five possibilities), marrying two of the girls (ten possibilities), marrying three of the girls (10 possibilities), marrying four of the girls (five possibilities), and marrying all of them), and include the jealousy management and bundle of children raising that the higher order marriages would lead to (things like Maria and Elli playing nice with each other because they're friends, don't mind the arrangement, and Maria is too timid to speak up even if she did, but Karen chafes at the situation because she's a precious snowflake. Or something like Ann fighting with Fox to wear the pants in the family [whether literally, figuratively, or both is up to you]).

Yes, I went there. No, I don't mean a word of it (except that it would be awesome, but I completely understand the lack of time argument, since I'm probably going to have to miss my annual update to moemon).

Okay, by my count the votes are currently:

Maria: 5.5
Elli: 5
Karen: 5.5

Unless one of the two new votes was someone changing and I missed it.

Given this, I'd like to break the tie by changing my vote from Elli to Karen, making it 5.5-4-6.5

If things were going the other way, I'd change back to her. I still want to save her from creepy baker dude, if nothing else. But given the alternative of Maria, Karen is the obvious choice.

None of the rivals can end up with someone until Fox does, so that doesn't work. If you can't decide, though, you can give your votes for me to use so I can use them as I see fit.

I still vote for the all possible endings ending, but then again, I am a quantum computer engineer (in training), and that's how we have to think. That way you can get your no girls ending, I can get my Elli, Maria, and Anne ending, and everyone gets their favorite endings.

But they can through the power of save states! You can stitch the footage from two endings and get all rivals partnered up and Fox moves back to the city with his father (wait, isn't that what we've been trying to avoid?).

Can't they marry if your affection level with the girl is low enough? If you really wanted to and could figure out how, you could hack the girls' affection down below that crucial point or give them toadstools so the rivals marry before Fox...

B-b-b-but that would affect the evaluation! Such a thing is blasphemy. Anyway, Fox needs to marry someone at some point because I wrote the beginning with the scene you get at the end if you have a kid in mind. My narrative senses would scream in agony if we didn't see that scene.

You could drop 4 of the girls' affections, let them marry their paramours, then boost their affection again...

I'm not saying you should, mind you, only that you could. I actually think you shouldn't, though saving, doing so for whomever we do decide to marry, seeing the wedding with the rival, and then going back to the save might be reasonable enough for completion's sake. I think only one of the weddings is particularly unique, though, that one isn't super special, and the relevant girl doesn't appear likely to marry Fox anyway.

Well, this vote is occuring under the assumption that she still has a chance to pull ahead -- I'm just trying to clear the field, not decide who we're marrying (but yeah, things don't look good...) I sort of made this vote under the thinking of "You know, if two of these girls can't win compared to the other one, they can't win when it's a field of 5"...But given how close the vote is, I'm getting less sure I made the right call in calling for it.

Anyway, that puts current totals at:
Maria: 6.5
Elli: 5
Karen: 6.5

Have a happy holiday, everyone. If your holiday of choice was previous to this one, this applies retroactively.

If you really wish to see what Deme does with the rival marriage for whoever we pick, you could play through yourself, take a video or many screen shots, than offer them to Deme for part of an "Its a Wonderful Life"ish bonus update.

As to the voting, I'd actually like to see what Deme picks, but I don't have enough votes to make it a three way tie. Eh, might as well: 1 vote for Elli

Actually, given how close this is...I don't think I should decide, actually.

The original intent of this vote was to make the eventual voting for wife easier, on the logic that these three girls, having had their events completed, are comparable (unlike Ann and Popuri, who have events left). And that if Girls B and C couldn't win when it was the three of them... How could they win when it was all five? By narrowing the field, it'd make the final voting easier.

That was my logic, anyway. However... What we've seen here is that there isn't a clear-cut winner, so saying "This girl couldn't win at the end" is...not going to work, or be true. So instead, Fox is going to keep waffling about, too torn up in his feelings to really make one move one way or another, until the time comes. And we'll see who comes to give us a birthday gift, tee-hee. And who we dance with...I need to count those votes, too. They'll probably get a touch more screentime, too.

Anyway, update this week may take some time. I'm going for Harvest King, which means replaying a stretch of game over and over and over again. Just a head's up.
Edit: When I can get to it... I'm still dealing with putting my room together after the re-carpeting, and the stress fall-out.
Edit 2: I...I don't know why I didn't do this sooner, really.

Here, have a Fox with a Fox.

Chapter 26: Harvest for the Harvest Goddess! Eggplants for the Eggplant Throne!
Spoiler
Show

Fall - 10 - xxx1
It's another ordinary morning... After last night, I didn't get a lot of sleep.
My dad always used to warn me that one day I'd find a nice girl, and all my ways would catch up to me because I'd have no idea what to do...
I didn't believe him (about the part where I find someone I really cared about, I mean)...But if I had, I would have expected...Not to find, what? 4 or 5 (I still have not sorted out Ann.)
And when I get the impression they care for me...What am I supposed to do? (If I asked Dad, what would happen?)

Anyway, with nothing to harvest, the morning's an easy one. And then I check the mail...

It's...It's another photo from the photo jerk.
WHAT THE HECK?
How does he always know this?
Is he a stalker? A spy for my dad? What...
WHAT IS THIS.

Also, this picture is...Not the best.
AND IT WAS TAKEN BY MY STALKER!

I also find another letter.

Of the earth! And who will be next year's King?!
This handwriting...My guess is Mayor Thomas's. It's the interrobang that does it -- he wants soooo badly to sell you on the idea that he's excited for this.

Anyway, up into the mountain. The old fisherman stops me.

"to make money. Great, huh?"
...I...I already knew that. I thought it was obvious.
"...Yeah."
I say, trying to hide my lack of excitement.

I notice the Potion Master looking about for something...
"What are you looking for?"
"Mushrooms, actually. Not ordinary ones...Something a bit more dangerous."
"...Dangerous?"
"The difference between a medicine and a poison is a matter of execution," The old man says with a nod.
"My medicine supply's been a little limited recently..."

In the cave, I find that dicey-looking mushroom, and figure if it's what the old man wants, let's see what he can do.
"This it?"
He nods.

"But let's try whipping something up."

I find Ann over by the goddess pond, too.

"What they want to say... Just looking at them stresses me out. I want to know what they're thinking!" She sighs. "But that's being meddlesome, right?"
"Yeah, it is. That's the sort of person you are." She notices the expression on my face and looks ready to fly off the handle.
"What's that supposed to mean?!"
I can't help be be amused by her face when she's angry like this; it's such an Ann-face, with everything she is balled up into it like a fist.
"I mean...You're a meddlesome person. You want to help everyone, and you're going to do whatever it takes to make them happy. Even if maybe they don't realize they want it yet."
She stands in silence, not sure if she's being insulted or not. I better keep going. It's all pretty much true, what I'm saying. Ann's been over to make sure I'm OK a lot, or to check up on Agros, or to give me advice when I come by...
I'm not sure if I should be, but...I'm grateful for it.
"Who cares if it's meddlesome, if you put your heart into it? I probably wouldn't be doing as well as I am...If you didn't help."
She smiles.
"Well, I can't just stand back and do nothing, right?"

I pause a moment.
"Still...I think Maria says what she wants to...It just takes some patience. Everyone's got their own pace; you just rush ahead a lot."
She laughs.
"That's right, I do!...When I can't, it just drives me up the wall; I just end up wanting to punch something!"
"I've noticed."
We laugh at this for a while; I don't hold this against her. Not when it means, on the flipside, I get to see that carefree laugh, that energetic push through life...It's so totally different from anyone I've met. I admire it, I think, even if it confuses me sometimes...
That's what I'm realizing, talking to her about it like this.

And more than that...I'm enjoying it. I'm enjoying her laugh, enjoying seeing her pester people to change the world a little bit...Even if that person is me.
"...Maybe I'll be like that, one day."
Her laughter comes slowly undone, leaving a warm smile on her face.
"You, like me? Nah. You're way too mellow. You try and do everything, but inside, you're chill." She looks at me, a little nervously. There's a girlish, coy expression on her face -- shy as Maria, in her own way. "B-but, the pace that you have...Paying attention to everything..."
She fidgets.
"That's the you that I like."
"Thanks, Ann."
Her shoulders sag like it was something that took a lot of effort to say.
As long as your pace is careful and shy about your feelings like now, Ann...The world won't fall apart just yet. I thank you, country, and your slow-paced girls.
(
"I will, I will."

Ellen notices my bag full of mushrooms and herbs when I head down into town. She smiles, a little sadly.
"The mountains must be bountiful now."

"up there?"
"Well, if there's anything I can get you, just ask."
"Well...There's this berry that grows in the light of a harvest moon. When I was young, your grandpappy and I would go and get it together...Ah, but that was before he met your grandmother, and before I met my husband..."
She smiles, lost in a wave of nostalgia.
"You look so much like he did back then... The roads seem so open for a man like that; it must get confusing."
Ellen laughs softly to herself. She's got me pegged; I put my hands in my pocket and shake my head.
"I'm surprised; I was so utterly seen through." I chuckle. "...What do you think I should do?"

The old woman rocks back and forth for a while.
"Don't panic. While it may be true you could lose things by taking it slow...Just take each day honestly, and don't rush into meaningless choices."
"Even if it means I might be leading people on?" I don't know why I put it like that, since, after all, one of those people is her granddaughter... Still, I feel like she's not going to judge me. That feeling's one I sort of have to toss back and forth in my hands, unable to do anything about it. I don't know how to handle acceptance, either.
"If you're really being honest with yourself...Even if it doesn't work out, I think they'll understand you didn't decieve them..."
As she says that...I feel better. Like the weight's sliding off of me, and replaced with something warm and safe...
"Thanks, Granny."
I'll have to get her that berry...Somewhere in the mountain, huh? I'll go hunting.

I buy a cake and head on my way.

Most of the day passes quietly. I tend my animals, talk to people, sell my things, finish watering my plants...
It's late by the time I get to go into the mountain again. I feel like I know it pretty well, but... I haven't seen this special thing.

So I start by checking up the main path...But it doesn't seem like there's anything like that here.
Instead...Well, there's the cliff by the tree....

I climb the tree in the dark, scrambling along hand-holds...
And find myself scouring the path in the night. The air is full of the sound of owls, and little things that scurry in the dark. I stumble on an old-looking building, standing alone at what feels like the top of the world...
I find myself knocking on it gently.

If there's anyone there at all...It feels like it was something for a long time ago, something that happened and was forgotten...
Why did I even try that door?

I turn around to see something in the bushes by it. I pick it up, not seeing what it is until I wrest it free into the moonlight.

This is it...Probably. It's something, anyway.

I hate jumping in the daaarrrk!
Ow. Hopefully I don't need someone to pick me up and carry me home...

I manage to get back, and fall exhausted into bed.

Fall-11-XXX1

Oh, is he here about the festival?

Called it in one.
"Is tommorow? So I heard."
"You should come."

"Yeah, how does that work?"
"That's a surprise for you to see if you come, Fox."
He said, as if lording it over me. I wonder if he realizes this is not that big a mystery.

...Nope. He totally doesn't. *sigh* Maria, your father is totally guileless.

I go to pick up another generation of fine eggplants when....

I hear Elli's voice calling out to me. I haven't seen her...Since...The other...(the heat of her lips on my cheek, her hand on my hand)
Uhhh...Then.

"Good morning, Elli. Need something?"
"Oh, no. Well, not exactly."

She looks shy, even as she admits that what she was doing what she does every day.
Unless...
"Your cakes are a part of the festivities?"
"That's right; they're King Cakes!...Literally.
So be sure to come, OK?"

King Cakes, huh...So they're use to determine the king?
...This really does sound like one of those blood-king nature cults thing.
"Of course I'll come; I can't wait to taste a King Cake made by you." I hope it's one of the ones with Nutella filling. And good icing, none of that cheap stuff.
I guess a solid one would be alright, or one with a really good home-made jelly, maybe...

She nods happily.

"See you then!"

Instead of the usual 2 I was expecting...
I end up with 4 plots of eggplants.

...My eggplant schedule appears to have gotten desynced. I am a bit cross.

I go up into the mountains, as per standard. It's Elli's day off, so she's fishing by the river.
"You always fish on your days off, don't you?"
"It's...very important to me."

"He was saying I was always too little to fish, especially on trips that he'd take with Jeff or the men of the village... But I thought, maybe one day, we'd go together..."
Her smile is tight as a violin string, playing a lonely note that makes me want to wrap my arms around her.

"So when I fish...I feel closer to him."
I suddenly picture it; a young Elli of a few years ago, dangling her line in the water, trying to wrap around her the feeling of her dad... There's an honesty to that image I envy; I can't say I mind Dad and I's way of moving on...But there's an honesty to that idea I can't think I know how it'd be in my life.
"That sounds like it must be pretty nice, then."
"It feels peaceful and calm."
"I can't say Dad and I really bonded...Even though I only met him once or twice, I feel like I probably would have been closer to my grandpa than him."
"So do you feel closer to knowing what he was like, working his farm?"

I flash back, suddenly, to my grandfather's deathbed...Him, mumbling in his delirium, clutching my hand...He said a lot of things, but only the last stuck with me...
Even though I've been chasing it, I don't know what he meant, or even if he knew who he meant it for...

I shift my feet and realize something else.
"...Hey, shouldn't you be making those cakes?"
"I do it in the evening; it's sort of a tradition."

"I'll let you go to your fishing, then."
"Come join me sometime, alright?"
...Would that be like meeting her dad, in some crazy metaphysical way?

"You're going to be the king, right?"
"...Uhhh...Maybe, I guess. Is it luck?"
"For most people, most time...But you're definately going to be the king at least once. It's destiny."
"Destiny? How is a random festival position destiny?"
"Because it used to mean something. And you've already done the job, so you're a shoo-in!"
"...Already...What?"
"Don't worry your pretty giant head, Mr. Fox! We'll make it happen!"
"...Ummm...You're not going to mess with Elli's cakes, are you?"
I sense this going very badly.
"We're elves! We'll be discrete!"
"..."
Yup. This is going to be a disaster.

Anyway, I head off into town, where I find Harris picking up some letters spilled from his bag. There are lot of them.
"Wow, you must be busy."
"Well, I kind of take on a bigger route than just this town; I deal with people along the roads and on the other side of the mountains, too... It makes me feel like we're all connected. Our happiness, our advertisements --"
"Our advertisements?"
"I'm reaching there, just a bit..."
He admits with a laugh.

"Serious letters...And sad letters. But that's why I..."

"And stuff like that."
"That does sound nice."

I head into the church, next.
"Hey, Kent. How's schooling?"
"It's alright, I guess..."

"If you drop by sometime and I'm around, I could show you what little I know...But you're probably better off going to Grey."
"...But Mr. Grey doesn't *talk*."
"He does so! To the bunnies and the foxes and the cows and sheep and horses and stuff...He likes flowers, too."
"But not to people!"
"He talks to me."
"Yeah, but bro...Your name's Fox, so he probably thinks you're an animal, too."
...I don't think it works that way.

Awww, that's cute.
"That's nice, May."
I will not express this cuteness through words. That would sully it.

The pastor, however, looks a little worried...

"Is it good enough?"
"Well, you're at least doing what you can, right? Maybe there are books you can get on better upper-level homeschooling or something."
"...That may be an idea. Thank you, Fox."
He still looks troubled. I guess now he's wondering where he'll get the money for that sort of thing...

And then I go deliver that fruit to Elli's Granny.

"Aaaah, this does take me back...It's such a sweet fruit, to only grow by the light of the moon...Still, it's been a long time since anyone's come down with one. I bet they're quite expensive, these days..."
She holds up the berry and smiles at it.
"The memories I have of it are so lovely and so sweet...A little bit of me doesn't want to taste it, and know if the fruit is so sweet anymore or not..."
"Oh, come on! You mean I climbed that hill for nothing?"
She laughs, a dry, husky sound.
"Oh, my...Please, don't be upset. I didn't mean it like that. Remembering the fruit, knowing it's still continuing after all these years...That's precious to me. I think I'll give the fruit to Elli for you...And she can decide if the berries now are sweet enough for her."
She pats me on the head like I'm a child.
"Well...If Elli gets it, I guess that's Ok, too."
I smile fondly, and head on out.

I get another one when I'm done my chores, and find Harris sadly nursing a drink at the bar.
"Something wrong?"

"But it's not easy...I'm not any good at putting words to what I really mean to say."
I think about it...I'm not much better, probably.
"Yeah, it's tough. I guess when it comes to talking to someone, you just have to do your best."
It's trite, but it's all I can say.

And then I get some water, talk around with Karen, and head home to bed.

Fall-12-xxx1

I harvest two things of eggplants, and take care of everything, before heading off to the festival. It's...Pretty crowded, particularly in contrast with the other festivals, which were a bit subdued.
"Wow...I guess a harvest festival is more important out here..."
Kai, behind me, laughs at the idiotic city-slicker.

"For the weather and everything... What else can you do but pray?"
Does putting in eggs at the goddess pond qualify as praying, I wonder?

Anyway, time to make some rounds!

"And you? You enjoying it?"

"Dance. I bet you're in high-demand this festival, huh?"
I laugh, awkwardly.
"Well, we'll see..."
"You're a good dancer, so I'm looking forward to see how you do."

I suspect that what I taste is, in fact, not actually 'stamina juice,' but rather some form of alcohaul...
"...Hmmm...This stuff is pretty good."

"Who could ask for anything more?"

Cliff's clearly interested in the food aspects. What more do you want than a festival of food when you're a wandering woodsman?

"But that's probably not the only reason."
"I wish I had known there'd be food; I feel like I should have brought something."
I've got recipes and I'm not afraid to use them!

"Like that when I grow up."
"Oh, I bet so. Maybe Elli can teach you."
I can really easily see her as the sort of person to want to do stuff like that, even if it means a smaller customer base.

...That you...Washed off?
Is washing them an accomplishment now, Ann?
"Don't give me that skeptical eyebrow! Here, have one!"
I munch on the vegetable offered.
"They're good. I mean, they're clean vegetables..."
I guess she's worried that she could mess up washing things...
"I tried not to damage the clean flavor...Or something like that."

"Well, at some point, probably...But if you just get the basics down, the rest should fall in line."
But knowing Ann, she'd probably rush into trying to make complex stuff if she really wanted to learn.

"Nature. We need to remember that."
Your propaganda has worked well, oh Harvest Goddess.
In all seriousness, I nod.
"Yeah...I'll say this much about living out here versus the city...In the city, you don't really think about that sort of thing; it just sort of never occurs to you...So I can see why remembering the world we live in matters more, now."
She smiles.
"Say, did you make anything here?"
She looks into her hands and nods.

"Maybe...You could try everything, and see what you'd guess..."
I look over the foods and try them. I notice something about one of them...The salad has cabbage in it, which isn't what I'd normally suspect...
"It's the salad. And maybe some rice balls, too."
She nods.
"That's right! I-I'm glad...That you can guess my cooking..."
She blushes, and then pulls a little wax-paper wrapped cookie with some walnuts in it from her apron pocket.
"U-umm...I also..."

I take a few bites. It's an oatmeal cookie, which I generally find I prefer...As long as it doesn't have raisins. It's got that slightly-burntness that marks a homemade cookie, and makes it feel a little warm.
"It's a really tasty cookie, Maria. Why's it not with the other stuff?"
"W-well...It was my first time, making a sweet like this...I-I'm practicing...For..."
She blushes and trails off, unable to complete the sentence properly. Instead, she goes for:

"Foods?"
"Not much, not much at all."

"So I eat too much."

"Her initial King Cakes got destroyed by something...We're not sure what, but something went ripping through it... We had to do something a little less perfectly-aligned."
I know what did it.
HAAAAAAARVEST SPRIIIIIIITES!
YOU HAVE DENIED ME CAKE!

Thanks, Mayor. Couldn'ta guessed.
"Have a good time."
"Thanks, think I will."

You know, I at least harvest pretty much in every season. It's more like we have harvests...
Oh, who am I to spoil the fun?

"I try."
Except when the blessers of the earth destroys my King Cakes.

I try a fork-full. The bitter taste of the herbs mixed with the strong vinagrette...
"...It's...Unique."

"Is the taste too strong?"
That's a way to put it, I guess.
She sighs, but brightens.

"So this was a fun experiment for me <3."
"...Well, I'm glad you had fun, anyway."
She does look really excited about this, that certain bubbling Popuri charm rising to the surface.
"Next time, I'll try it on rice!"

Grey quickly tries to cover up anything resembling human feeling for me.
"I know you're fine just by looking at you."
"He's fine. I think we're still sort of getting used to each other..."
"He liked your grandfather a lot. He needs a little love to get by."
"I'll do my best."
It's what I always say.
"...I know that just by looking at you, too."

"But I don't like the taste. How can grownups drink..."

"Heh. You'll get used to it; I don't think it's something kids really get the flavor of...And that's...Probably for the best."
Remember, kids: don't drink until you're of legal age! (Guess who has two thumbs and is a hypocrite: this guy.)

"Because he ate too much."
"It's a real risk...But such risks must be taken by those men who call themselves truly daring!"
"Wow, really?"
"No, I just say that because I don't want to feel bad about eating too much myself..."
That said...Isn't the whole point of this festival over-eating?

When I head back up towards the center, I find that Elli's stepped out into the square from the hidden "employee" area.

"Heya, Elli. Sorry to hear about the cakes..."
"These things happen, I guess. And they turned out so nice...Well, you came here for cake, not sobbing about baked goods."

Oh, what could have been...
"you're the next King."

I take a few bites, nibbling cautiously...I'd hate to...
clink
Owowowowowowowow! My teeth! Ugh, it's got that 'biting tinfoil' feeling, too! Sons of monkeys!

I remove the offending substance...

Well, I guess that means I'm the king...
I'd wonder if the Harvest Sprites had something to do with this...But we already learned *all about* their efforts.

I guess he needed to announce this for everyone else, too.
Hey, what happens if a girl gets this coin? Does she get to be the King?

...Oh, boy. Well, I saw the Sowing Festival....But I hope the Spirit Festival's not too much...

The mayor continues after everyone's eaten some cake.

"Everybody, choose your partners."

Well now, well now...
I spot a lot of eyes on me, and feel my skin crawl. Still...I think at one point, I promised Karen we'd dance next time...And she is good at it...So let's go with that.
"Karen, care to dance?"
"Always, always."

She laughs and takes my hand as a piecemeal band starts up.

Karen's light on her feet, which is the sort of thing that really makes a difference with simple dances like these.

She's quick and knows the rhythm. She winks at me, sending a little shiver up my spine. I take her in my arms for the brief second the dance lets us close, and I spin her and dip her.

There's a smattering of faint applause, and then we're both spinning off our own ways. Come to that, that's the way it's always been for me;
it's a dance and you just change partners now and again...

But as she comes close, her hair whipping around her... I don't know what I feel; I'm just watching her face as it comes and goes, pulled by the dance, her face bright and wild with the joy of movement.

And we slow to a stop, and eat, and begin to go our seperate ways...

Good sleep...

Technical Report!

So, I got the Harvest King position. I didn't do it totally naturally, I'm afraid; I saw a lot of "And next year's Harvest King is...Cliff!" or the like. This pretty much always happens, so I thought I'd run through how this works for the unaware.

Basically, it's random. I heard rumors at one point about there being a cycle, but that's pretty much untrue. This should theoretically be easily cheesable by just saving/reloading the day of the festival, riiiiight?

Wrong! It's a little difficult to talk about this works to people who haven't played diary-saving Harvest Moons before, but in HM64, you save at a diary when you go to sleep (you can sleep without saving, but you cannot save without sleeping).
Certain things about the day, such as the locations of people, are decided "when you wake up" ish...Or rather, after you save. This allows you to easily reset the locations of people.
Other things, like the weather forecast for the next day (what's on TV), are determined "when you go to sleep," After you commit to saving, but before the game saves. You cannot reset and hope to alter these things. Who is the next Harvest King is determined like the weather, to prevent resetting-cheesing.

But it can be cheesed; you just have to not save on the 11th, and reload from your Night of the 10th save. Meaning you have to replay the 11th. Over. And Over. And Over again, until you eventually get to be King. Enjoy!

Or you can do what I realized, after my first replay, I could do: use savestates before going to bed on the 11th, allowing you free and easy cheesing. Enjoy!

...I apparently like the word 'cheesing.'

By the way, I'll be away from my Harvest Moon computer from the 4th to the 12th, so I'm taking a week off, it seems! In the meanwhile, though, I'll try and get a bonus chapter up to tide things over.

I'm back from vacation, and have produced an update! Hooray!

Chapter 27: Autumn Days
Spoiler
Show

Fall-13-xxx1

I woke up today as the newly-christened king of the Harvest Festival...
And for a moment, I thought it was going to be a dull day. No eggplants to harvest, no rain on the horizon, no letters in my box...

But when I hit the mountain, at least there was a show.

What's on screen one today...?

Oh, I guess it's Ann and Cliff. And Cain. And a bunny.

...To survive. It would be cruel to tell him not to."
He lifts his head and tosses her a determined look.
"Besides, it's nature's law that the weak are hunted, and..."

Ann turns away; there's a little fresh tear in her eye, where the cruelty of what she loves is a bit much.

"Saying, but I still don't like the idea!"
For a second, Cliff looks like he wants to reach out to her: something a little soft and lonely to his expression, like those days he'd speak of losing someone. His free hand lifts toward her and hesitates in the space between them.

But before that happens...

She puts the rabbit down, and his expression takes on an exasperated, defeated quality.

"Sorry, Cain...But today's that rabbit's lucky day. The law of Nature doesn't account for the law of Ann!"
I don't think anyone can count for the law of Ann.
Cliff scratches under Cain's feathers, affectionately shaking his head as Ann walks away.

"So I guess you're gonna have to share my fish instead...Don't give me that look, buddy... I lost to her, it seems."
The smile on his face has a bitter, wistful quality.
" I should hit the road soon...Or I'll just keep losing."

That said, he and the bird wander off.

Since I'm king, I guess I'll see the goddess. I'm still mad, so there's no way I'm visiting the Harvest Sprites.

"Hi there, honey! So I hear you get to be my hubby this year! <3"
"Wait, what?!"
The Goddess throws back her head in laughter.
"Oh, I got you good!...Though I remember a time when the young man they chose was fated stand before me...And I would take him in my fragrant arms, and we would lie together in the glade...I'd not ask it of a man in love; I don't want to be girl #6!"
She laughs completely devoid of dignity, bending over to catch the stitches in her side.
"...Very funny. It's...It's not my fault! All of the sudden...There were people in the world I cared for."
"I know, I know...Still, it's not fair to your heart, to be up in the air forever, and who knows if they'll wait...But you are pretty cute, so you've got time <3"
Leaving that steaming pile of awkward aside.
"Hey, did you arrange this whole King thing? The sprites tried."
"Ha, silly things. They like you so much... But no, I can't decide the king. That's for humans. Maybe someone else was on your side, huuuh? Or maybe it's fate."
"I don't like this fate business."
I mean, what's fate but humanity's overbearing dad?
She laughs again.
"Come back in winter; I'll need you to do a special service then. Oh, but don't make that an excuse to be a stranger. Ta-ta!"

And then I head down to the village, as per the usual. In the bakery...

I find Popuri looking over the menu at the table corner.
"And tea <3."
Elli looks a little flustered.

That's a good bit of cake and pie, after all.

Bah, eating dessert because you're hungry!
The ideal time for a dessert is about an hour after dinner, when you're no longer too full to enjoy the dessert, but you're not eating it out of hunger.
There's something kind of dirty about eating a dessert to satisfy hunger. Like wearing a tuxedo because it's laundry day, or drinking a fine champagne because you're thirsty. The need of the thing ruins the beauty of it!

"Even when you eat a lot. I plump up so quickly."
"I've got my momma's metabolism <3."

Elli sighs and goes off to get her order. I'm half-tempted to stop her, and then...And then hug her and tell her that she's beautiful just the way she is, or some sappy thing like that. Something to tell her not to worry...Because she is amazing. She's beautiful and sweet, and it eats me up inside to see her worrying, even just a little, like that...
But you know? I've known girls who worried about their weight...And you can say that they're so great looking all the time, and they'll never believe it... That's true of lots of people, when it comes to things they worry about themselves for...And when you care about them, which apparently I do because I'm a moron who's decided to be full of feelings... It always breaks your heart. What I'm finding is...You just want to hold them until all the self-doubt and worthless envy goes away.
And it'll never happen.
Well, that, and Popuri's right there and what the heck would I do then?

Jeff comes over to her with some warm tea.

"You'll like it..."
"Do you think I made Elli mad? I just really like her cakes, is all..."
"No, I don't think she's mad. You know...I think..."

I'm not sure you can define 'healthy' that uniformly...But for a girl like Elli, who runs that way, I think it probably is. Forcing her body to behave a way it doesn't want to can't be all that good.
...Still, it's good to know that Elli has someone else to tell her not to worry, even if he's only telling that to Popuri at the moment.

Popuri giggles.

"Riiiight? Heehee."
Jeff sputters about. She apparently hit the nail on the head.

He says, trying to return the conversation to something normal relative to him.
"You're an attractive young lady."
Popuri looks at his face for a moment, and pulls out a doozy of a question:
"Are you actually saying that to me, or just because you need to say it to someone you can't?"
"What? Well, I was...Just...Making smalltalk...?"
"Because I don't think I need to diet, or I wouldn't be having a cake and a pie. That's terrible dieting!... If you've got words in your head that are meant for someone, they're only good for that one person. Just saying what's in your heart to anyone won't do any good <3!"
She closes with a bright and cheerful smile. Jeff mumbles about nothing in particular.

So that's what he really wants to tell Elli, huh?
Does he mean it like a fatherly 'you're a beautiful girl,' or... The way I mean it? I'm not sure...What I feel about Elli in the arms of some other guy...
I mean, if she likes him back, that's OK I guess -- I can't stop her, but...But...

If I keep doing what I'm doing, will I miss my chance with someone precious to me?
UGH, THIS IS ALL MUCH SIMPLER WHEN YOU LEAVE BEFORE BREAKFAST!

He returns to behind the counter, and Elli comes out with a warm plate of pie.

And then Popuri just starts giggling. I'll wait for this awkward moment to pass before I come back.

When I come back in later, they're both gone, and Jeff has an oddly philsophical look.

"was young, ten years seemed like a long time."

"...How old are you, anyway?"
I've been wondering... He talks like he's a lot older, but I get the impression that's in his head.
"Only 30, actually...But it sort of feels like I'm older. I've been managing this shop for a long time...And I watched Elli grow up...It's an odd feeling."
"Well, you're only as old as you feel, right?"
"I think that only makes it worse, don't you think?"
"Maybe...But what I'm saying is, even though it's been a long time...Maybe that's something that you're too worried about. 30's not that old; the future's all ahead of you!"
He smiles like that's encouraging. Good; I don't really have any experience sounding upbeat or energetic.

I find Cliff at the ranch, watching Ann over his shoulder. He's trying very hard not to pay attention to her.

"That's cruel, Cliff." Even if he's exactly right.
"Maybe a bit. But...Looking at her, don't you get the feeling that she can take it?"
"...Yeah. Ann's a very strong person."
He nods, thoughtfully.

When I talk to Ann she's noticing this odd behavior...
"Wh-what does he think he's looking at?"
"The horses?"
"...Y-yeah...I guess that makes sense."

I go home, take care of my chores...

And fish the evening away. At first I thought it'd be poor fishing, since I went a long time without a bite...

But then I caught a big one! Victory for Fox tonight!

Fall-14-xxx1

An eggplant harvest is in! I think between this, the fish, and Lambo's wool (I see him, poking his head over the fence, all fuzzy...I'm coming for you, boy.), I think I'll be hitting all the money save-up I need soon.

I check my mail as usual, and find a letter.

Eat too much <3
(It's too much for me...*sweatdrop*)
-Elli

Elli... Again, I just want to hug her until she stops worrying about stupid, useless things like that. But I also...When I read the letter, I smile a bit. Because Elli's sharing this with me, this little unexpected, really girly side of her.
Say what you will (Say what I said) about it, but... When you're done after 3 dates, or leave before breakfast... You don't really get to see little bits of a person, revealed one at a time, like this.

Of course, I could stand here all day, but that's not actually good for anything. So onto the mountains, where I grab things and make small-talk with Cliff.

"Eh, my old best friend was that guy at the watercooler who had too many opinions about the roadwork and poor taste in beers. In comparison, I think Cain's way less pathetic." He's a better conversationalist, for one. Also: when your best friend is a falcon, you are officially pretty cool.

Let's see...Nothing else of real note as I wander around town in the mountains, though Kent asked me a good question when I went to help the kids today:

"Lots of reasons. Everyone wants you to know what you need in the world...And to try and help you find a direction."
"But I've got a direction!"
"I never said they were all good reasons."
After all, when I was a kid, I studied because my dad made me. But there were a few things, like horticulture, I studied just because I enjoyed them. It's an odd balance.
He grumbles.

I move on to my library lunch...
Or I would, except...

Harris gives me a friendly little wave as he approaches.
He checks the library's mailbox, nods at the adresses, and turns to head back the other way...

When Maria steps outside. She has something that she's trying to bend and fold between her hands. It's paper, so she's practically threatening to tear it up.
"Oh, H-hello, Miss Maria...Is there..."
Before he can finish, she blushes and thrusts the object at him. It's a letter.

He looks at it with a puzzled expression. Is she embaressed because it's late? We're sort of thinking the same thing, but he shrugs it off.
"Yes. Certainly."
He takes a few steps, looking over the worried envelope. Before Maria can turn to go, he looks back over his shoulder.

Maria fumbles about and blushes...And then she notices me, and a faint little smile spreads on her lips.

She nods to us both and heads back inside.

Harris looks about in a panic.
"W-what? What should I do? What?"
"You could try reading it."
He nods, and hurries off. Darnit, I wanted to read that...

So I go into the library to see if she'll tell me.
"What was the letter for?" Because man, I want to know.
"I-it was...A letter of thanks. I've been writing other libraries about trading books sometimes, and that's been a lot of mail... Some of the books are pretty heavy, and he has to carry them all the way to and from the post office..."
"And you wanted to thank him? That's sweet."
"He always works so hard... A-and because of all that stuff we've talked about...I wanted to tell him my thanks. Even if it's just in a letter...It's a step, right?"
I nod. With Maria...It's always a little hard to tell what she feels or wants. But if she's becoming that braver person she wants to be... If I get to watch that transformation for myself, like a bird learning to fly with wobbling wingbeats... Then that's something I want to see, regardless of if she likes me or if she likes Harris, or neither of us.

When I headed home, I thought I needed to go get the shears for Lambo...

But when I was looking in the toolbox, I noticed I had had the shears all along. Yep.
That was sure competant of me, huh?

Well, wool still makes everything better. Since my chores were finished a bit early, I headed up to the mountains for a little extra something-something...
When I checked my funds after that, I saw it.

I've done it. I've made enough money for a greenhouse! Eat it, universe! Who's a pathetic failure now, Dad?!

At the bar, I'm in a good enough mood that I just start passing my fruits and things around willy-nilly. Karen's dad does something other than just accepts it, though.

Oh, is he giving me a recipe? Sweet!
Or is he giving me a black eye, and being facetious? His face doesn't really move, so it's hard to tell...

Recipe. Awesome.

With my drinks drunk, my chores done, and my people talked to...

There's nothing left to do but till some soil, I suppose. I work late into the night... And call it a day.

Fall-15-XXX1

There's an egglplant harvest to get in, and I manage it pretty well in the morning. I'm still in a pretty good mood from last night. Suuure, I don't have the lumber I need...But I have all winter to worry about that!

The morning passes with ease, and I'm feeling confident enough to afford a cake! I'll see what Elli has to reccomend, and maybe pass on my thoughts about that letter...
But when I get there...

"She's in the back."
"What's she doing back there?"
I resist the urge to lean over the counter.

There's a loud clanging noise from the back. We both turn and look at it with concern, when a familiar voice comes through the walls.

Oh dear. What is Ann doing back there?

"We'll have to start all over."
Ann has always said she didn't know how to cook...

And she apparently really, really, really does not know how to cook.
"Let's go with this."
"But the egg yolk you added will ruin the texture."
"Oh, I'm sure no one will mind!"
Poor Elli. This must be driving her up the wall.
"Oh, you're so rough, Ann."

Jeff apparently shares my sympathies. Ann's good at what Ann's good at...But I suspect this is just a disaster waiting to happen.

"Has it ever gone any better?"
"Well, Ann produced an excellent science fair project...A baking soda volcano."
Ow.
"The girls are so lively....But you probably want to get going before you get roped into settling taste arguments between them."
"...Yeah. I like them and all, but..."
I don't want to eat a science project.

To the library for food it is!
As we're eating, Maria looks out the window and sighs dreamily.
"The leaves looks so nice."
"You like Fall?"
She nods.

"I like the idea of sitting on a cold night, curled up with a book...But it's not so cold the library needs some time to get the heater warmed up, like it does in winter. It's ideal."
"That does have a nice ring to it... Maybe some cocoa, or a mulled wine?"
"...Aaah...That does sound good..."
We sigh together in unison, picturing some long fall night spent cuddled with a book, a blanket....And maybe...Each other.
Well, it's what I pictured.

...

I'm tending my crops...

When I realize I don't know where Agros is. He's always with me, so my brain suddenly kicks into a panic. He's my shadow at home, and like a second set of legs...It just freaks me out.
I spend about an hour whistling before we find each other.

And then I go fishing, but come up blank.

*sigh*
...

Still, looking at this money...It looks like I'll have some discretionary income soon.
I feel really proud.

Typo Report! (We're busy today)

...Uh...No, Cain has to eat birds and rabbits to live, Cliff.
No one involved in this, myself included, is good at remembering which variation of Kain/Cain/Kane/Cane the bird uses. But I went back and checked, and he initially introduces his buddy as Cain.

At least it's consistant within a scene.

...There's no real typos that I noticed here. I'd just like to point out how bizzarely the original scene was executed in the original. The bit where Popuri's all "Isn't that meant for Elli?" is my invention entirely, to try and make the scene make sense with the given facts (Popuri feels no need to diet, or any doubts of her attractiveness, and Jeff likes Elli and is saying things that are relevant to his interest in Elli.) No, he just brought the tea, said that he likes girls that are like Elli, said Popuri shouldn't worry (about stuff she doesn't worry about), she's attractive the way she is (even though Jeff doesn't care about Popuri, and in fact, never speaks to or about her again)...And Elli, the girl he really likes and his feelings are relevant to, is in the next room. What. Is. Even.
This is reason #547 no one likes JeffxElli.

I'm not sure what she was really trying to say here; I just did my best.

Yep, you're are.

How old is Harris anyways?

Yeah I wish it was possible to sabotage Elli's relationship with the old guy without actually choosing her.

Yay, it returns! 3 weeks with no updates is a long time...

You could just not befriend either of them. I'm pretty sure that rivals only marry when they like you enough unless the girl likes you too much and you're unmarried.

Yeah, sorry about that... Time got away from me last week, and I was away from my computer before that. I'll keep working on improving my schedule!

Anyway, I'm going for all the weddings, for one...So sabotage is out. And for another, while I don't like EllixJeff very much... I particularly don't want to leave her as the only one all alone if we don't marry her, either. Like, that just feels cruel.

.
According to a translation of a Japanese guide for this game that I've found online (and am using for stuff like names for 'nameless' NPCs and ages, where I can)... He's 25, same as Grey. Kai's the youngest, at 20. Cliff's in the middle at 23. These ages sound pretty OK to me, so I'm keeping them. The game never mentions ages, except I guess that Jeff does not shut up about feeling old.

The girls, for understandable reasons, do not have canonical ages; I'm pegging them between 19 and 23 for the purposes of this LP.
