I'm not going to be able to avoid putting down multiples for a few bands, though I did decide not to put any duplicates in the 9th and 10th spots which were harder to decide. Almost every band that turned up in the top eight had another album or two that could have potentially made it, but I decided to narrow things down to make choosing easier.

    10. Dream Theater - Black Clouds and Silver Linings
    9. Disturbed - Indestructible
    8. Symphony X - Paradise Lost
    7. Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
    6. Death - The Sound of Perseverance
    5. Iced Earth - Horror Show
    4. Dio - Holy Diver
    3. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
    2. Iron Maiden - Powerslave
    1. Judas Priest - Painkiller

    Honorable Mentions:
    Artillery - By Inheritance
Holy Grail - Crisis in Utopia

Really the only reason neither of these two made it is that I'm very new to the Artillery bandwagon and Holy Grail are just very new in general. I felt that I couldn't quite put them on an all time favorites list just yet, but wanted to give them a nod all the same.

On a related note, I think it would be interesting if we could track down the last time or last few times we did something like this and see how people's lists have changed over time.

    Sure, no particular order.

    Thanatos- Emerging from the Netherworld
    Vektor- Outer Isolation

Megadeth- Killing is my Business... and Business is Good!
    Anthrax- Persistence of Time
    Aspid- Extravasation
    Obliveon- From this Day Forward
    Alchemist- Organasm
    Symphony X-Iconoclast
Gamma Bomb- Tales from the Grave in Space

This is a list that represents not only what my favorites are, but also to an extent the ones that have been most influential for me as a musician:

    Opeth - Blackwater Park
Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element, pt. 1
Metallica (sorry, Grimbold ) - ...and Justice for All
    Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction
Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
    Slayer - Reign in Blood
    In Flames - Whoracle
Dimmu Borgir - Puritannical Euphoric Misanthropia
    Katatonia - Viva Emptiness
    Meshuggah - obZen

    Honorable mentions
    Tool - Lateralus
    Fear Factory - Demanufacture
Dream Theater - Metropolis, pt. 2 (I'm not really thinking of them as a metal band, but on the other hand, PoS is on the list so... I dunno)
    Cynic - Traced in Air
    Protest the Hero - Fortress

I'm probably forgetting a load of important stuff...

Edit: I certainly did forget about Pantera. Far Beyond Driven belongs in the top 10 for sure. Hmm.

the fact that you like metallica seems to be a huge crimp in our sensei-apprentice relationship

    also
my list probably should have included some meshuggah

but i can't think what i would have taken out..

Your shame fills me with approval... or something like that

Edit: But really, as I said, this is half favorites, half timeline of my metal evolution. I hardly ever listen to Metallica these days.

Wow, I just listened to Peste Noire's Ballade ****re lo Anemi Francor. First time I'd ever listened to a Peste Noire album. I am blown away. And confused. Like, everything about that album seemed to scream 'pretentious black metal,' until I actually listened to it. It is sooo trippy...

We don't talk about a lot of groups.
For example, I don't recall almost anything about Rage.

Oh, it's list time again. Goody.

Here's mine, for the time being. No particular order and all that:

    Tiamat - Wildhoney
    Agalloch - The Mantle
Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth
    Iced Earth - Horror Show
Amestigon - Sun of All Suns
    Moonsorrow - Verisäkeet
Falkenbach - ...Magni Blandinn Ok Megintiri...
    Bathory - Nordland I
    Orphaned Land - Mabool
Dream Theater - Scenes From a Memory

    Honourable mentions:

    Kamelot - The Black Halo
    Midnattsol - The Metamorphosis Melody
    Panopticon - Collapse
Iron Maiden - Brave New World
    Moonspell - Darkness and Hope

Edit: I really wanted to hate Peste Noire. My first thoughts were also "avant-garde black metal bull****", but I just couldn't stop myself from enjoying it. Even though every single one of the band members are clearly mentally disturbed.

Edit edit: The new Ensiferum album is finally here. Even though it... seems less awesome than was expected? Hell, I'm getting it anyway.

And now for how many times various bands came up. I only counted once per list for cases like mine where multiple albums appeared from some bands. I suspect that if we held run-offs or the like, some of the more polarizing bands like Dream Theater might get knocked down a few pegs, but Arrow's Impossibility Theorem states that we wont ever be able to come up with a completely fair means of voting, so y'know, whatever.

Hey Liturgy lovers and haters, check this out.

Good work. Definitely needs more people's top 10's to make this a better list though. The top 10 of the overall list should all have at least 3 votes a piece to make it feel a little more legit.

It'd be pretty cool to have a playoff system by seeding all the multiple vote albums and having rounds of voting. Albums with the same number of votes could be seeded by year, then alphabetically by album title. If it's an odd number of albums, the 1 seed auto-qualifies for round 2.

This is what Round 1 would look like as it stands...

Yeah... it's not brilliant. Coupla good bits, but nothing to really write home about. Also a lot of clean vocals? Meh.

Hm, that was intended to be a mock playoff since I was gonna wait for more top 10 lists to come in. But I guess the rate at which they were coming in was slowing down significantly, so what the hell, let's start! Votes for Round 1 must be cast by 9/3, 11:59 cst.

Feytalist, I literally just copied and pasted your choices because I saw that they were exactly the same as mine. I do feel bad about snubbing Iron Maiden twice, though.

    Heh. S'all good.

Yeah, me too. But I like Brave New World more anyway, and it was otherwise an easy choice in any case.

A run off election is one where the candidates who got the most votes go on to a second round where voters' choices are restricted to those candidates. I believe that French elections have a run off system, so you're probably familiar with the concept if not the English term.

Wow, that was awful difficult. I don't really like Opeth or Sunn0))) (or Boris), and yet Jester Race and Wildhoney are two of my favorite albums... Also, battle 7 was weird. I'm a really big fan of Slayer's Show no Mercy and of Blind Guardian's Somewhere in time. It just so happens Nightfall is one of my least favorite BG albums and RIB is one of my least favorite Slayer albums, so both choices seem bad...
