Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
Honestly it's never been that specific in my experience. In my experience the definitions of both genres have been as vague as I mentioned (new wave of punk/after punk.) Your description of either genre seems very odd and inadequate, like only using the traits of symphonic prog to describe all prog. If it were that black and white I'd find it easier to seperate them. But why is Joy Division so widely considered new wave and played on MTV? Why is music as dark and progressive as Talking Heads so definitively new wave? Why is something as hook oriented and melodic as The Police so definitively post-punk? Why can no one come to an agreement on where one ends and the other begins? How can it not be that they're the same genre and post-punk is a buzzword?
I'm a reasonable man. I know when I've screwed up. The whole "power metal is less thrash than glam" thing was incredibly stupid. I knew that as soon as Iced Earth got mentioned. But I'm completely convinced of this. Until questions like the ones I mentioned get proper answers I'm going to remain convinced.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
Don't lose sleep on my behalf, I'm like the guy who shows up for the same party every week without knowing anyone there. I've been here forever, but I could disappear tomorrow and no one would notice. Alienating me probably buys you more cultural capital than it loses you, to be honest.
Joy Division and Talking Heads are pretty hard to classify within the dichotomy, but The Police is absolutely new wave. Post-punk isn't a buzzword. You're entitled to have any opinions vis a vis genre you want, excuse my orneriness.Avatar by Kris on a Stick

As if. I struggle with "is this metal**," like, all of the time.
"post-" tends to be a meaningless and often pretentious* prefix in general, but I think that interpreting the word so literally is pretty ill-advised.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
In most cases I'd agree but in this case it really calls for that.
I'm done with this topic. We're going in circles. Let's get back to metal. So, what good metal albums have come out this year? I have the obvious ones like Converge and Cannibal Corpse but can I get some obscurities up in this mo-fo? That'd be nice.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
Blut Aus Nord came out with a good album this year (well, it's alright at any rate). Serpent Sermon by Marduk is pretty good. Agalloch came out with a brilliant 20 minute piece in the summer. Spectral Lore released a fairly grim album. Carach Angren and A forest of stars released new material.
There's more than that but by the time you've reached the end of this you may realize that this is mostly black metal (all of it in fact).

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
Well, I've been harping on about the new Finsterforst for like a week, so I guess there's that. It's really good. Borknagar released Urd way back at the start of the year, and it's probably the best thing they've ever done. Same with Enslaved's RIITIIR.
Tiamat finally released a new album, and it's pretty good. Better than Amanethes, I'd say. Moonspell released a double album that got some mixed reviews, but I liked it at least.
Candlemass released their final album, and it's brilliant. My Dying Bride released one, and it's okay.
Kamelot released a surprisingly good album. So did Sabaton. Elvenking released a surprisingly bad one. Ensiferum released one that I'm actually unsure about. Wintersun released Time I, and that's all I'm going to say about that. Therion released some sort of symph metal homage to old French songs, and it's growing on me.
That's most of the ones I care about, I think. I might add more as I remember the rest.
Edit: Oh! Panopticon! How could I forget? Kentucky is just really ****ing brilliant. That is all.
Oh, and then there was Katatonia's Dead End Kings. Does that even still count as metal? Whatever. It's really quite good.Last edited by Feytalist; 2012-11-30 at 04:21 AM.

Did "Kentucky" come out this year? Huh. I thought it came out last year. Nevertheless, still excellent.

Kentucky came out this year. Social Disservices was last year. I actually don't have that one.

Are we already into the votes of the best albums of the year?
Well, Panopticon gets my vote, later I'll think to something else.
I'm unsure 'bout Sabaton: it's good but imo not so great.Do I contradict myself?

So... just heard Kamelot's new song, Sacrimony (Angel of Afterlife). I was worried after Khan left, but damn. Karevik did a good job of replacing him.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
High on Fire and Om both had releases this year. They were alright but nothing special from either band. Earth had a new one out early in the year which was really good, but they've sort of left the metal sphere by now. I think? And, Baroness had Yellow and Green which I thought was disappointing.
So, via process of elimination, I'm giving it to Behold... The Arctopus on principle.Avatar by Kris on a Stick

The new Mondstille album slays pretty hard and the front man is super nice. Sent me a free shirt and CD because he liked my review of the album.

Hmm. I checked out The Sword's 2012 release, but it wasn't particularly noteworthy. There was a decent Old Man Gloom album, too, but nothing really compares to Ufomammut's output this year. ORO: Opus Primum and ORO: Opus Alter, guys. They're the greatest.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
Two releases I forgot about:
Eluveitie's Helvetios. Pretty okay. I thought it was good, and then it started going bland on me. But still not bad.
Epica's Requiem for the Indifferent. Didn't care much for it. Don't really know what they're trying to do, but it's not really working.
Anything else coming out rest of this year? Still patiently waiting for Christopher Lee's "heavy metal album", but it's kinda gone quiet.
So we can probably start doing out favourite of the year lists again.Awesome fremetar by wxdruid.

I don't know what Cannibal Corpse fans are complaining about, Torture is probably the best album they've done. Definitely making an AOTY list, fo' sho'.

My AOTY is the new Taylor Swift. Anyway, I've not been listening to much metal, but some bands that released stand out metal albums that I can recall at the moment:
Wodensthrone, Witch in Her Tomb, Tjolgtjar, Spawn Of Possession, Sigh, Rhinocervs, Revenge, Pseudogod, Proclamation, Peste Noire (rerelease of demo material), Mondestille, Male Misandria/Malveillance (split!), Lunar Aurora, Kamelot, Drudkh, Dødsengel, Deathspell Omega, Charon, and Bosse-de-Nage.Wonder Woman (DC Girls in Sweaters Style) Avatar by Astrella.

Re: Metal Thread VII: The Mosh Pit Don't Start 'Til We Walk In
I like the lead single off the new Taylor Swift and I do have the CD, I just haven't listened to it yet. I doubt it will be AOTY material but what are you gonna do, eh?
Spawn of Possession did nothing for me. Tech Death has to work pretty hard to please me, I like my Death Metal grimy and ugly. Wodensthrone and Drudkh are great. 2012 has been a big win for black metal, I don't think I've listened to a bad black metal album yet. Screw the haters, Krallice was exceptional.
