Nope. The -2 is still there. In your own post you'd pointed out that it was a mark. Marks in general always give the -2 penalty to attack anyone but you. That is what a mark is. Some marks come with additional perks (like the sanctions damage), but that is spelled out in the ability that does the marking.

That's fine. Also when you get a chance please post a 120 x 120 png image so Arthur will have a token.

Excellent correction! My main point was just to say the Divine Sanction is not a generic mark. The -2 is even better.

I have a couple of questions. Can divine sanction mark more than 1 target and I've read the text it doesn't say anything about a -2?

Yes, DS can mark multiple targets. There are many higher level Paladin powers that mark via DS in burst and blasts. The duration of the DS is always stated in the power and is usually until the end of [Paladin's] next turn.

The description of DS says that it is a mark and via dariathalon's logic a mark (no matter which kind) gives the -2 penalty to attack.

I just looked at the PHB and all mark's grant -2 to attack so DS is really powerful.

I hate to point this out, but shouldn't the first wolf that Arthur attacked get a OA on him as he moved away to charget the second wolf?

Really sanction isn't all that powerful; it just brings them up to about even with other defenders marking ability. The damage it does isn't usually all that much. And if Arthur wants to keep up the multi-sanctioning, it uses up resources pretty fast.

    MARKED
✦ You take a –2 penalty to attack rolls for any attack
that doesn’t target the creature that marked you.
It doesn't say that because the effect for being Marked automatically includes the penalty. They just spell it out in earlier books. Unless it specifically says otherwise the creature will be taking the -2 penalty along with the damage.

And the fact is that it my marks are based off cha, Arthur's highest ability. It will do 3 radiant damage now and 4 when we reach 4th level.

As for burning resources, the idea is that I mark everything. The enemies weren't bunched up enough for my encounter power, so I did something else. So long as I'm keeping the attacks focused on me it's not a waist of resources. Sure, I won't have an Action point later but any hit you guys don't take now is a hit you can take later against a boss that hits everyone.

The basic condition of Marked carries the -2 penalty to all attacks that do not include the Creature handing out the mark, no matter who is handing out the mark. The violation punishment is the unique part for each defender class. It is interesting to note the both Divine Challenge and Divine Sanction deal their damage when the marked creature declares an attack that violates the mark, even before the attack is rolled.

The job of the Defender is to keep the enemies on him. You did a great job with the action point!

Just dont forget that you can hand out divine challenges as well, which are a little more powerful in terms of damage.

Arillius I took the character portrait from your sheet and resized into a token for the map. If you want a different one feel free to change it or if someone else could clean it up a bit because I didn't do a great job.

Now that the first combat is over I wanted to get your thoughts on how it should be handled going forward. Is everyone okay with it being turn based or would group initiative be better?

Also are you all okay with standard experience?

I generally prefer grouped initiative for pbp. It seems to make things go a little faster. At least grouping all enemies by type would help some. I can go either way though if individual initiatives are really important to someone for some reason.

Experience I'm pretty easy on too. Standard is fine, but if you want to go faster that's fine too. If you do go faster, keep in mind that the speed of the treasure packets should also come faster since 4e does assume certain item bonuses for each level.

Everyone seems to be posting quickly so I would prefer individual Initiative. If it becomes a problem Grouped would be fine.

I dont care about XP one way or another. I quit using it along time ago in home games but I am fine with it if that is how you want to run things.

One suggestion on combat. Post the # of the defense of an enemy after that defense has been attacked. That way we can RP a hit or miss. Also, you wont have to tell us hit or miss and the game can go faster.

On initiative, I usually prefer individual when possible. In a tactics-heavy game like 4e, the alternative is often to set up a dozen or so contingencies of 'If Player Y takes out enemies Z, then I will attack enemy Q unless ally B is bloodied by the AoO'. Otherwise we end up with situations like my blunder at the end there, with Matilda being told to target a dead wolf. It does slow down a PbP game, but everyone here seems to be able to keep things moving at a pretty solid pace. As long as we can all keep up the post rate when we're in combat, I'd say stick with what we're doing.

On XP, I will admit - I like rapid XP. Most campaigns end up covering a relatively tiny level range, and PbPs can go several real-time months between levels. In this kind of setting, ratcheting up XP/loot progression could keep character growth constant even in a slow medium. Just my thought though, I'm game for anything.

Historically I've just played with individual initiative, but I'm open to either way. As for XP, I think I'd prefer more rapid XP as that seems to go well with the slower medium of PbP, but I'm open to that as well.

Just a quick reminder that Eldon's Mantle of Elation gives everyone the following benefits while within 5 of Eldon.

    +3 damage to OAs.
    +2 to Intimidate and Diplomacy.

I bring this up because I think that Caleb forgot to account for the bonus to diplomacy in his IC post.

I should mention that I'm going to be in Europe for the next couple weeks, which is really going to mess with my ability to post. Matilda is quiet, thankfully, so it shouldn't stick out in the talky segments, but if we get into combat Hircine is free to make her moves to keep things going.

    Apologies about that.
