As some may already know, I'll be taking a vacation of Monday the 20th until the Thursday the 24th. Sorry if this causes any Roleplaying problems, though one can assume Daniel and Taylor are simply out of action until I return.
D&D is the only game I can think of (with the possible exception of Calvinball) where the only way to lose is by playing to win.

Questions about the government of this Equestria.

    1) Do Celestia and Luna have a council that handle the major affairs of the nation?

    2) Does the Mane Six fill any of the positions?

    3) If so do they hold all of them?

    4) if not, can there be all sort of crazy political drama in the background?

I've always played the game believing that the princesses serve as figureheads with a limited amount of political power since times have changed especially with the rise of the Nobles families. I've always fancied a sort of plutocracy WITH TONS of crazy political drama in the background.

Its part of Balboa's backstory, to strip Nobles of their political power, even if he has to resort to systematically killing them off.

Yeah, I see it like that too. The princesses are too busy and the Equestrian treasury is not strong enough to protect the country. Most castles, small towns, and armies are owned directly or indirectly by powerful noble families. Like I have the city and fort at Fetlock controlled by the Flamestrongs. Only certain free cities like Bridle Shores and Manehattan are free from noble control.

But outside of Bridle Shores is nobles gone wild. Not The War of Five Kings crazy like a Song of Fire and Ice. Something more muted and cold with funding of gangs and cults, marriage alliances, slaying of families, and most of all castle sieges of weakened Houses.

What's the distance from Canterlot to Bridle Shores in miles, rough estimate?

This is so I can get a rough idea of when Starbeam, Snowstorm and Moonlight'll be arriving.

Speaking of the latter, anybody know the average miles-per-day of a marching army?

I'd say unicorns can go 30 miles from 8 hours marching. Earth ponies 40 miles. Pegasi 80 flying.

I would think the royal taxi Twilight Sparkle took from Canterlot to Ponyville was about 100 miles apart.

Actually, since Moonshine lives in Canterlot (and won't be in the BigHuge battlezone), I might be able to slide in at least as a peripheral individual.

And at most, I can picture the kind of PR sinking your political claws into a paladin of Luna would create.

    All right, here they are.

    Blades:
    Spoiler
    Show
I actually don't know how I came up with Blades. I think part of her (definitely the accent, and possibly some of the personality) was inspired by Orin Kaenbyou from Subterranean Animism, but for some reason, the rest of her evolved into a character sort of like the illegitimate offspring of Applejack and Pinkie Pie with a side of axe-craziness. It's rather confusing.

I normally avoid transcribing accents, preferring to imply them with verbal tics and sentence structures, but something about the "ya" instead of "you" and the shortenin' of gerund endings and the like felt perfect for her, so I took it and ran away with it. Now, it's hard to imagine what she would be like without it. Her accent also inspired her liking of strawberries, and thus her baking skills, since I thought it would be fun for her to say "strawbries" like that.

Her alignment is probably Chaotic Neutral. There's no question about her unpredictability and lack of regard for rules, but she's both genuinely well-intentioned (a good trait) and actively destructive (an evil trait), sometimes both at the same time.

She isn't fond of magic, and has absolutely no magical powers. Instead, she relies on a variety of mundane skills along with her strength, cleverness and determination. She's also developing something to compensate against spellcasters, but I'll let you discover what that is on your own.

Basically, she's very strange for a character of mine. Half of her was just things I thought would be fun to play with, and I don't understand where the other half came from. Still, she's very, very fun to play.

    Night Jewel:
    Spoiler
    Show
The original idea behind Night Jewel can be found here, as she was created for the lighter roleplay. However, being a very versatile character, she's found her way into this universe as well. She has developed some other characteristics here, though.

Her morality is somewhat unusual, since she values cleverness almost as much as she values goodness. Her standards are something along the lines of "If you don't kill, don't oppress, and are clever and elegant about it, it's fine". She's willing to rob and deceive her way to victory, but she does mean well, and is probably a more chaotic Chaotic Good.

The way she deals with others can vary depending on who those others are. She can act either innocent or mature, carefree or collected, and can either play up her foreignness or hide it, whichever she suspects will suit her purposes best. Whatever the case, she tries to be polite and charming.

For some reason, she, especially this incarnation of her, has a few Arabian elements. I'm not sure whether it's because she felt like a trickster-hero from an Arabian Nights story, whether something about her manner just seemed to fit, or whether I was inspired by playing Quest For Glory II, but whatever the case, she has those traits.

Her skills are subtle and quick to anger. She's not much of a fighter, and prefers to use persuasion, tricks and speed to defeat opponents. Her magic manipulates mechanisms, and while it may seem fairly weak, it depends on how you define "mechanism". By experimenting with different ways of seeing things, she can apply her spells to other uses, such as bending light to create simple illusions.

I don't know what else I have to say that I haven't said before, but she's developed in interesting ways, and I intend to keep developing her, along with having amusing interactions with my other characters.

    Blueshield:
    Spoiler
    Show
Blueshield was intended as a boss in a game I'm planning, just like Flower Tail in the light roleplay. Her intended role was sort of a "hero antagonist" one, where she showed up and tried to keep the player character from going into danger by any means necessary. In the actual roleplay, she's likely to get in the heroes' ways as well, but be ultimately good.

Somehow, she developed a strong vocabulary during her planning. Since she is both intelligent and disciplined, it seemed to fit her, and I wanted her to be able to use complexly-worded phrases to insult ponies without them understanding what she was saying. For example, "The entirety of the equine population of the local municipal region are evidentially in possession of sanity deficits", which roughly translates as "All the ponies in this town are crazy".

She's moral and sensible, but living in a world as crazy as this one has left her very stern. Her guards' incompetence and Night Jewel's troublemaking have been driving her to the brink of her sanity. If she were to met a pony who lived up to her standards, they would get along fairly well. Her alignment is most likely Lawful Good.

She has some similarities to Blades in terms of combat abilities, as both lack magical power and instead succeed through cleverness and skill. While she lacks some of the sheer overwhelming power that Blades has, she can fly, and also relies on special gadgetry.

My plans for her introduction were originally simple, as she would simply be an agent of law pursuing Night Jewel. However, what with recent plot developments involving armies of darkness, her arrival might be different and more exciting. I look forward to bringing her into the action proper and seeing where she goes from there.

    Obsidian Flare:
    Spoiler
    Show
Obsidian Flare was another character from a planned game of mine. She was originally intended to be a final boss who had been sealed underground and was willing to do anything to get free even if it meant imprisoning the player character in her place. Part of that made it through, but it grew into something more complicated.

Half of the plot involving her was written by the seat of my pants, but I think I've got things reasonably sorted out now. I didn't originally have a backstory for how she got sealed and why, so I set up the story of the two groups with alternate ideas of what to do with her. It worked surprisingly well, giving me even more plot material and making the choice involving her more complicated.

Her alignment seems to be True Neutral for now. Three hundred years of isolation have left her detached, and she doesn't really care about morality any more. Depending on what other characters do, she could become an ally of the heroes, join forces with the villains, or become independent in one of several ways. Of course, if she's forgotten again... Well...

I gotta say, I like the idea of transcribing Campaign NPC's to freeform like that. Especially the idea of conflicts and antagonists without any actual evil-aligned characters. I'm generally fond of grey and gray morality, particularly done well. Now if only I could pull it off...

I might have to do this myself, now I'm all inspired by the backstory/explanation goodness, though 'all of them are from my fanfics' may add a crimp.

that's....Pretty interesting, though I'm more fond of just Black and White morality and some Gray and Black ones, not grey and gray, that one's usually annoying to me

I've got to say that Night Jewel just utterly confuses me, I never understood if she was just into being a trickster cuz it was challenging or something. She seems pretty "blue", like, mustly just cleverness, it would be fun to put a straigh-foward solving character near her Like Luka

And you just made me more interesting on checking the results of making Luka and Mile meet Blueshield , the latter's an overly-cheerful chaotic good and the former an overly-idealistic Neutral-Good.
