Slayers d20 episode 1 - New heroes appear! A king's ransom!?

Many years have passed since the the fight against the great Ruby Eye and its subordinates. The northern point of the eastern continent, the region once known as the Mazoku barrier, is enjoying a period of relative peace. Despite the battle scars are still visible, and there is no shortage of tyrants to overthrow, the people do no longer have to fear the machinations of the mazoku. Of fate of the heroes of legend, little is known. It is unlikely they have simply settled down. Those who knew them, trust that they simply kept going to bigger and grander endeavors, for that was their calling.


Still the kingdoms of old endure the passage of time, just like the tales. Seilune stands proud, the Temple of Ceifeed as magnificent as ever. Sairaag's Sorcerer's Guild keeps guiding the brightest and more cunning minds in their exploration of the infinite depths of magic. New heroes roam the land, making a name for themselves.

This is when our story begins.

Lanzafar Halfspar is a brilliant wizard, although not particularly well regarded by his peers. His neverending thirst for knowledge, no matter how minute it may be leaves little time for social niceties. However, no one can deny his command over magical lore. Faced by the end of his apprenticeship at the Sorcerer's Guild and without original research to extend his stay, he is strapped for leads.

A lead comes in the form of a letter. It seems that the Kingdom of Dils, to the northeast, is holding some sort of special gala for all practitioners of the arts. Naturally the letter was not appointed to him in person, but as luck would have it, the Guild's upper hierarchy had declined to attend and it fell upon him, the notable student, to attend the function on the Guild's behalf. It may not be what Lanzafar would have hoped, but it wasn't bad. Free food and board, plus an opportunity to meet other sorcerers, maybe scrap out a job out of it? Not bad at all.

Kin Jintaro had been on the road for a while, making his way, just as he intended. He was a devoted student living on the ideals of faith and righteousness, just like Master Goshine had taught him. He was deeply surprised when a package from Seilune found him at an inn in the Kingdom of Dils. Putting away the home made preserves Lily Jikolo, a fellow student, made for him, he read through his master's letter.

In the letter Kin's master asked him to personally deliver a sealed scroll. He explained that a long time friend of his, King Dils IV, had ceased his correspondence without reason. This worried him and by sending him with his letter, he would be able to put his worries to rest. It seemed like an easy enough job to do.

Shiina The Red-eyed monster, was a frequent tale among bandits. A fierce warrior with fiery red hair capable of tearing down hordes of men, something out of a bandit troupe's worst nightmares. Conversely, many villagers appreciated someone who was willing to take down criminals, however violently it may be. Some say that even a fanclub had formed around this mythical woman.

In truth, Shiina Kaymoore was just a young woman warrior with an anger management problem, or so she tried to convince herself. She would do anything to get rid of this thing inside her that made her go berserk, even if it was useful at times. However it may be, she made good coin out of mercenary contracts (within her own limits, of course) and that was good enough.

One day, walking down one more isolated road, Shiina came upon a carriage being attacked by monsters. Situation being clear enough, Shiina tore through the abominations with ease. A finely dressed woman came out of the carriage and thanked her for her assistance. She made her a handsome offer for her protection along the road to some summit to be held in the kingdom of Dils. Without anything better to do, Shiina took the job.

(Describe your characters preparations and what would you have in mind to deal with this situation)

Swift hooves and steel wheels thundered Lanzaffar Halspar across the countryside, the moonlight streaming through his carriage's two windows like the eyes of a great beast. The team of horses jumped at the lash as the driver pushed them to their limits, their teeth glowing bone-white in the moonlit sky. Inside, he sat on the edge of his seat with one arm out the window, peering thoughtfully off into space as the wind whipped his hair behind him.

Beside him, the other three paying passengers in the carriage were carrying on a conversation about something inane -- gardening or keeping pet ferrets or some such. If only the fat man would scoot over, Lanz thought, he wouldn't have to sit so far on the edge of the seat.

One day, I'll have a proper carriage of my own without having to take passengers everywhere. Then I won't have to sit with these commoners. That's right! A dozen carriages driven by my Royal guardsmen! Muaha! Muahahahahaha!

"Ahem."

Lanz stopped mid-cackle, his hands up in the air, and looked around the carriage at the other passengers staring at him.

"Ahhh .... excuse me. I just remembered a hilarious joke."

Lanz went back to staring pensively out the window at the moon, thinking to himself.

A gathering of sorcerers in a social setting is exactly the kind of break I need to find more lore about Chaotic Blue. Who knows what kind of research and ancient tomes one of them may have dug up while off adventuring? It will be an amazing battle of wits and casual conversation suited to a future overlord of my caliber!

Lanz resisted the urge to laugh again, and then noticed a glittering city rising up in the distance, its torchlights gleaming in the night as the carriage trip drew close to its end.

I do wonder what this Kingdom of Dils is like. And for that matter, why did the Guild leaders decline to come here ... ?

Riding along on the roof of the carriage, Shiina was enjoying the sun and it's warmth. even though offered to ride inside it, she had refused out of her simple wish to stay out in the sun.

''Hey lady, you okay in there? might i ask what this summit you're attending is all about? and i never really got a hold of your name, so who are you, a princess or something?'' she asked out of curiousity, the woman had only just hired her after all, and some infomation on who she's supposed to guard would be rather fitting... at least that was what Shiina believed.

Kin had been listing the things he needed to do, while on this journey. He took out a basic list of ideals to complete. After all it would be extremely difficult to do things if just went about doing them all willy-nilly. Kin had to keep focused, his master's friendship with royalty was on the line. Surely this man had a good reason for everything, or so he would assure himself aloud in the echoing of his room "Lord Ceifeed, may you blaze my path. Help me to make my master proud and may no harm come towards any of those I care for,in your name flare." After the prayer he paused thinking a bit "Never hurts to be a little cautious. This scroll is my only true priority. Hey! Maybe he'll even have a lead on a job too." Kin had already gotten sidetracked the second a possible second benefit came from delivering this message.

Quickly regaining his thoughts, he would make sure everything in the room was placed correctly, he left nothing amiss in the room, and finally that Lily's preserves were placed into his pack. While his Master's letter was safely tucked away in his clothing. Picking up his holy staff he would make his way to try and locate the person, whom he was personally charged to deliver an important message to "Off I go...Hopefully this isn't too time consuming..nah it's just a delivery..can't be that."

Shiina:

Gracefully peering from her carriage's window, the noblewoman addresses Shiina, smiling calmly: "You can call me Lady Purpure, I hail from the southern coastal lands" She did meet what Shiina would've thought a noblewoman would look like: dress was a bright lavender color and rather airy. Her long dark, reddish purple hair was braided at the end and shook wildly on the air. Her skin was so fair that made her golden eyes stick out even more. Her jewelry, rings, bracelets and earrings clattered with the carriage's bumpy pace. If anything her calm, almost sisterlike demeanor was the thing that jarred the most with the image in Shiina's mind. "You have no idea what a relief it is to have someone to watch over our safety. These roads just aren't safe anymore. Are you sure you won't come inside? It may be easier to talk without the noises of the road."

(Shiina may ask anything she wants within their journey. It would take a couple of days, but eventually they'll reach Dil's capital, Lady Purpure's destination.)


To all: Gyria City

The Kanzaka Almanac (published for almost a decade now) says that Gyria City, capital of the Kingdom of Dils, was famous for a violent Coup d'état perpetrated by the mazoku and charred to a crisp by That feminine looking man. But that was ages ago. As it stood now, Gyria City was yet another city estate, surrounded by walls and graced with a magnificent castle. Our would be heroes arrive, on their own accord and time, to Dils Castle and are handsomely received. Naturally Lady Purpure is given honor according to her status, and she goes on to ask that rooms should be arranged for her bodyguard, Ms. Shiina Kaymoore. She pays her rather well for her time, and with the offer of free room and board she hopes Shiina will stay as her bodyguard for the time being. Lady Purpure excuses herself because she needs to get ready for the reception at the royal ballroom, where there's going to be food and drink to spare.

The letter of introduction by the Sorcerer's Guild opened the castle's doors to Lanzafar without a hitch. He found the place not overpoweringly wealthy but suitable enough. Castle courtiers told him he would be granted an audience with his majesty later today, and in the meantime he was free to go about the castle as he pleased, or he could join the other guests in the royal ball room.

After several bouts vs guards, castle employees and who seemed to be the royal advisor, Kin is granted entrance to the Castle. He is told to wait until the royal audiences to be held latter that day, and that he was free to go about the Castle in the meantime. If he so desired, he could go to the royal ball room, where a reception was being held, along with a lavish buffet.

"You have no idea what a relief it is to have someone to watch over our safety. These roads just aren't safe anymore. Are you sure you won't come inside? It may be easier to talk without the noises of the road. Don't meantion it, I'm happy to help out where it's needed. It's nice to do what good i can while able to, because no one lives forever."

The soldiers accompanying the carriage seem like your average castle soldier lot. Gruff, quiet, and generally resigned on their role as cannon fodder. Their equipment looks okay, if a bit light on the protection side. Their armor looks smeared and battle worn. This kingdom may be more dangerous that it may seem.

Never having been the type of girl that uses a lot of time infront of the mirror, Shiina was content with a 15 minute bubble-filled bath. After stepping out of the bath and taking her clothes and her prized white-silvered chainshirt on, she first then realized that That infernal little squirrel had even followed her into her room, sleeping content on one of the pillows.
Jeez, that little critter follows me everywhere... 'sigh', i wonder why..? oh well, better go to lady purpure's room and await her there, i have a job to do after all, She thought to herself as she swinged her claymore behind her back, into it's tilted scabbard. Shiina then proceeded towards Lady Purpure's room, waiting patiently outside.

Shiina:

Lady Purpure comes out of her rooms, dressed in a fine gown suitable for the reception. Looking at Shiina she seems rather disappointed. "Oh dear, had I know you were without a change of clothes I'd have arranged to have some made for you." At the red haired warrior's puzzled look, for in her mind she wasn't really going to a party but to work, Lady Purpure added: "Oh well, I suppose I should remember that you are my bodyguard, not my attendant, right?"

Everyone:

The royal ballroom does not disappoint. Lavish decorations, soothing music, a veritable cornucopia on the buffet table. One out of three wasn't bad, Shiina thought.

Gyria City

It was quite the journey to reach this location. At least it was a pleasant trip filled with wonders he had never seen. Kin was not used to the flashy displays and various shops of a city. It was not something he cared to learn either "All these places to go, no wonder it's so difficult to focus in a city...SO many distractions." Kin would gripe to himself as he walked through the various sectors, until reaching his destination.

Thankfully the kind people who had given him the location of the right area to visit. He had spent most of the day sight seeing before getting back on track. The guards here were diligent and even gave him some friendly advice on where to go. Before Kin could ask if he may be an exception to the rule, his stomach let out a monstrous roar "Guess my lord is sending me a direct message. May Lord Ceifeed watch over you all." Kin was never at a loss for manners, and would make his way to the direction where food was, entering the ballroom within the hour.

He was dumbfounded by the smells, music and decorations thinking to himself "...How much did this cost to throw? City people must be very rich..Woah look at the spread...ahem," Kin cleared his throat to bow his head, thanking his lord for such a bounty. After which he made his way to the food. It was shameless, that Kin would start to pile on the food, truly letting nothing go to waste. During that time he would look around the room for anyone of interest, leaning on his staff for support.

Lanzaffar stepped into the magnificent ballroom, mildly disappointed that no attendants had announced his entrance. Adjusting the cuffs on his equally extravagant outfit, Lanzaffar straightened his posture and checked his tightly-bound ponytail, looking nothing at all like the only son of a common foreign craftsman. He began scanning the room, looking for the tell-tale signs of powerful sorcerers.

When I have my own kingdom to rule, these royal guardsman will have to show me more proper respect! All I need is to complete my ultimate spell, and then I'll have enough fame, power, and money to have five palaces like this! Time to get down to work, surely there are some powerful sorcerers in he -- is that a buffet table?

Lanzaffar stopped in mid-plot, his mouth watering behind his steepled fingers. Without really meaning to, he made his way over to the buffet table and began filling up a plate.

If I'm looking for powerful sorcerers, it only makes sense to start near the food. Strong magic is notoriously calorie burning, right? Right ...

[Hemnon]

Seeing the huge buffet almost made Shiina forget all about the little detail that was that she had a job to do. Resisting the inviting aroma was hard but possible, since her wish for food was simply that she LOVED the taste of it, not a physical need.

She followed the lady wherever she went, her eyes darting about, searching for any suspiciousness. This was when she realized how wrong her clothing was. A clean shirt, skirt and boots did not fit in here where dresses and fancy male clothing was in use. even her Chainshirt didn't lift her dress-rating.

But Shiina didn't give a rat's behind about that. Comfortable and safe was rated far better than laced frilly dresses and shoes that'd give ancle-problems later, in her book. Though, she really did stand out, what with her huge sword reaching from her left boot, up and just passing her right shoulder.

Shiina awaited for the lady to not be in a conversation to ask her a question.
''My lady, if i may, what is this-um-ball all about? I've never been to anything like this, and honestly it's making me a tad nervous... so many frilly dresses with lace.'' Her last remark was accompanied with a shudder and a disapproving glint in her emerald-green eyes.

Shiina awaited for the lady to not be in a conversation to ask her a question.
''My lady, if i may, what is this-um-ball all about? I've never been to anything like this, and honestly it's making me a tad nervous... so many frilly dresses with lace.'' Her last remark was accompanied with a shudder and a disapproving glint in her emerald-green eyes.

"Well my dear, King Dils IV has always been known for his generosity but I think this is the first time I've seen such a large summons. I suspect some big royal proclamation is in the wings..." An old man with noble robes and a twirled mustache politely tries to catch Lady Purpure's attention. "Excuse me Lady Purpure, the king wishes have a private audience with you." The noblewoman nods, and turns back to Shiina. "It seems I must relieve of your duties for the moment dear, if you could just wait here I expect it won't be long".

As shiina reached the buffet, she immidiately attracted some attention, what with her empty plate that quickly had been turned into a mountain of food. At the table she found 2 guys who seems to have just as much of an appetite, maybe even bigger.

''Hello there, nice buffet, right?'' She said and smiled to them both, but it was shortlived since she just then started to not that gracefully, eat.

''*munch-munch* Yum, gesh Is ge gest foogd I've tphasted ign a gong thaime.'' She declard with her mouth full

Kin had been enjoying the process of eating far more than the idea of going about chatting it up with people. Looking rather annoyed by the music that flowed so softly, and the amount of people without a care in the world. Back home, some people had to steal for food, to feed their families. Here folks seemed to throw away plates, just cause the rice was a little over cooked, or the meat a tad bit undone, it was evil..

However his unhealthy habit of brooding while enjoying his meal, was interrupted by a snazzy and well dress man, wearing a pony tail. This is the sign that he was out of his league. Looking down immediately at his robes that held dust and dirt from vigorous travel, noticing his own hair was long, blond and naturally spiked at the tips and finally the fact he towered over many of the people here, lead him to be...awkward. The only part of him that looked remotely clean and friendly. was the fact his staff was adorned with a small dragon shaped amulet.

When the well dressed man did exactly as he did, Kin no longer felt bad "Hello stranger, your the first person who didn't look mean and snobby," He had knack for saying the wrong phrases when concerned. He let his words flow just as another joined their buffet raiding. Kin who was in mid tear of a leg of meat heard the young woman who approached them, adding her in "Correction..the second person. Hey there.." He only paused between bites of food to chug glasses of sweet nectar.

Once he had gotten more than a mouthful down at a time he introduced himself by first thanking his God for the meal "If I might ask, since all the cool people seem to be eating food, what are each of your names? I am Kin, Priest of Ceifeed." He ended his sentence literally breaking a bone in his teeth, draining the marrow and truly leaving nothing left of it. It was a horrible ending for that bone.

Having emptied her plate with startling speed, Shiina began to refill it with desserts this time.

''The name is Shiina, Shiina Kaymoore. It's a pleasure to meet you Kin and i agree, it's nice to see other people her that doesn't look like a dress-up doll or anything worse.'' The last remark was accompanied with a giggle. After that, she began to litterally devour the yummy desserts.

Lanzaffar was so busy trying to eat and scan the room for other spellcasters at the same time that he hardly even noticed the other two approach. When the enthusiastic young girl spoke up, Lanz almost dropped his plate with a start.

She must be a powerful one indeed to be able to sneak up on the likes of me. I'll have to keep my eye on her for sure.

Putting on his best sociable smile, Lanz gives a brief bow but doesn't go as far as setting his plate down.

"Greetings, Priest Kin, Miss Kaymoore. My name is ..."

Best not to reveal too much, one of them might be an agent of my rivals.

"... Lanz. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Finishing up his first round of food, Lanzaffar began carefully picking through the offerings on the table for meat that was just perfectly cooked or pastries without a hint of burned crust on them.

"What brings the two of you to this lovely event?"

To Lanz:

Judging by appearances, there are a number of evidently powerful wizards among the crowd, although none Lanz has met before and all in all, they seem a bit too full of themselves to deign to pay him attention. However, Lanz does notice something. The ballroom extends to a balcony, which is currently closed off and obscured with curtains. On it, a young girl with light blonde hair made in ringlets is staring at the horizon with a longing look on her eyes. A tiara adorned with sapphires rests on her graceful head.

[Hemnon]

With a fruit-filled pie halfway into her mouth, Shiina looked at Lanz with a frown.Oh my... maybe he's an assassin after lady Purpure, better not reveal too much infomation.

''I'm here because of a certain person hiring me to guard them. What about you, yourself mister Lanz... what matter brings you here? except for the good food i mean.''

A tiara? And she seems so sad ... I wonder if I could help her somehow? Yes, yes -- I could help her, and maybe make myself an ally in this kingdom.

Lanz's gaze rests on the woman on the balcony and he sets his plate of seconds down on the table, untouched. He waves nonchalantly to his two new acquaintances as he is already walking towards the curtained balcony.

"Oh, you know. This and that, that and this. I'm here to meet new people, mostly. Oh, dear me, I think I may have left a candle burning in my room at the inn. I'm going to go out on that balcony and see if anything's on fire, excuse me."

After that blatantly fabricated excuse, Lanzaffar made his way across the room with a stream of excuse me's and pardon me's, parting the curtain and stepping out onto the balcony.

"Excuse me, miss. Are you all right?"

The young lady stirs from her trance turning towards Lanz with a gentle smile "Oh, you need not mind. Tell me, how do you like our reception? I may have missed you when I first came into the ballroom, so I should introduce myself: am Princess Cecily Vas Dils Gustaff, pleased to meet you."

Lanzaffar smiled and gave a full bow, flicking the hem of his cloak aside briefly.

"Your Highness, forgive me for not recognizing you immediately. How may I, Lanzaffar Halspar, be of some small service to you?"

Taking notice of the conversation, Kin had already foresee a possible issue between the well dressed and paranoid seeming fellow, and the beauty who seemed a bit tom-boyish. "Master Goshine was correct, the world is full of different people." He remarked mentally to himself as he watched them stir about.

Taking sometime himself to look around the room. Making sure none were staring him down, and being cautious not to offend these royal sensibilities, at least until the well dressed man spoke last "You have got to be kidding me. Did he really just... over something so trivial. I'm insulted." It was an odd moment for Kin to demonstrated a flash of anger, not just because that excuse was half baked, but to say it in the middle of a eating frenzy is just rude. His voice raised just a bit out of the normal, as he broke into a coughing fit, remembering where he was. Stuffing a nearby pie into his mouth to avoid gaining further attention.

Looking over at the second of the two new people he asked Shiina a question "If I may ask, How come you don't seem to be enjoying this fancy party outside of the food?" He paused making sure to choke down the last bits "Perhaps you would like to dance? Or maybe not." Kin was bold but also had very rarely engaged in these kinds of activities, it was more important feeding the poor, and helping children to learn then it was to party, at least for him.

To Kin:

Most of the attendees do not look down upon him. From his experience, the group is comprised mostly of sorcerers, eccentric and secretive, than nobles or merchants.

Lanzaffar smiled and gave a full bow, flicking the hem of his cloak aside briefly.

"Your Highness, forgive me for not recognizing you immediately. How may I, Lanzaffar Halspar, be of some small service to you?"

"I appreciate your gallantry Mr. Halfspar. However, there is little you or anyone could..."

''Dance, with me? um, I'd love to but i need to keep an eye out for the lady I was hired to protect... but thanks for the offer.'' She replied to Kin, along with a smile.

''What is your profession, mister Kin? according to your robes I'd guess a priest, or maybe a scholar?'' Shiina asked curiously.

Kin had recently noticed that everyone around them, had not ceased their partying on his accord. Thank goodness, now he could go back to enjoying his free meal. After taking a few more bites of food he decided now would be a great time to check his standing and see if any of those suspicious characters was afoot. Then again considering the make-up of this party, Kin probably looked more suspicious than anyone else.

Listening to Shiina, his guess was right. She was indeed some kind of warrior and asked him a question. Kin didn't need to think twice "Priest of the Mighty Ceifeed, at your service. Then some other time, Miss." Offering his services to someone who looked like they could handle themselves seemed a bit redundant, but never hurt. Getting up from his seat and cleaning himself off, he would tune into the world around him.

Kin and Shiina:

Kin and Shiina hear an unusual sound, the beating of wings! Kin distinguishes not one, but many of these beating wings, approaching the castle!


Lanz:


"Eek!"

A scaly, reptilian and vaguely humanoid creature with wings swoops down and grabs the princess, taking her into the air.

"Unhand me, you foul creature!" the creature dangles Cecily in the air, several dozen feet over Lanz's head.

Lanz can count at least a dozen of these winged monstrosities looming feet over the castle, surrounding it.

Hearing the unusual sound of flapping wings approaching, Shiina heads outside on the same balcony Lantz did a few moments earlier, to find out what's causing the noise.

''Holy cricket! what the heck are those beasts!?'' She yells out as she sees the flying humanoid reptilians. Out of pure combat-earned instinct, she draws her huge claymore, ready to defend herself.

She then proceeds to yell out towards the flying beasts, Taunting the one that apparantly have caught a woman in a dress.
''Hey, salamander-breath. yeah you carrying the girl! are running away from a me, a female!? hah, you're all just a bunch of overgrown lizards, dropping their tail after being caught!''

Taking his cue to follow the young woman, once he picked up on strange sounds. Kin looked somewhat serious, thinking about the situation. His expression changed to one of valor, as he too headed out for the balcony, the source of the sounds. Only the problem wasn't the fact there was a sound, the problem was Kin had picked up numerous wing flaps. Before he could warn the woman, she had already headed out, which meant her hearing was almost as good as his own, interesting.

He looked around and would try signaling to the guards, the party must've had at least a few on watch. Kin was avoiding causing a public riot, but with all things considered, that in it's self may be impossible. After waving to the guards to signal grave danger and hoping that understood he left after Shiina. Once he arrived he caught the tail end of her bluff and sweat drops rolled down his face "Numbers...meaning tactics meaning...they must've had a purpose in grabbing that woman. Whomever she may be." His thoughts echoed as he slammed down his staff, seeking to aid the woman in danger, looking over to see Shiina had drawn a claymore. Such a massive weapon for such a smaller looking girl, guess looks can be deceiving "Note to self. Do not get in a fight with any woman who can out eat, and out lift me."

The time had come to show his true colors as he stepped out trying to view exact intentions but he could ascertain none, other than kidnapping a innocent woman! He was righteously enrage, and roused to action, ready to support the decisions of whomever else might lend a hand. He called to both Shiina and Lanz letting them know something simple "There are quite a few more of these fiends, than just the ones grabbing her, be on guard, friends." Kin figured anyone not trying to harm you, must've have been ally, hopefully.
