Sparks fly from his hydraulic joints as they grind together, and mercury superheated by the 'lightning' seeps from his brain cavity. Even with such extensive cerebral damage, he continues to fight, a shoulder-mounted cannon sending rounds toward Aerie in maddened retaliation. The plasma net finally does him in, taking off his left leg and sending him crashing to the ground.

Belladonna's target, meanwhile, is a bit more lucky. Her shot glances off the sniper's dermal armor, revealing a long section of plasteel plating beneath the bloodied scalp, but does no permanent damage. Still, he was just struck in the head with a high-velocity round, and he's knocked from his perch in time to save Bella's fellow escort.

Evan stands for the hug as well, and when they're hugging, he says quietly, "You know, I've missed you. We really don't see each other enough."

"The same way you build a vacuum. You force all the magic out of it, and then keep it that way. Simplest way to do that is to carve runes that keep magic away, and then empower them. Yes, I know that seems contradictory, but unless you want to destroy the very fabric of reality, this is the best way to do it, trust me." Sora says. He'll reach into his messenger bag to pull out a notebook and a pencil, and then sketch a small angular rune onto one of the pages.

He'll then move the run closer to the collection device that they'd been trying to use; the rune shouldn't allow any magical energies within a foot of it, and given how visible the energy without the containment device is, it should be easy to see the effects.

"What? A symbol?" Dexter almost can't believe it. "But... it's just a drawing. Anyone could do that. Right?"

I can drop the spell at any point," and as he says so, the symbol should lose its power and the energy come rushing back over, "What you're lacking in this term is the ability to empower it. It's a concerted effort of will and your own magical abilities needed to focus it into this," He'll slip the sketchbook back into his messenger bag, "That's the sort of thing that either takes natural talent or years of training to push into existence. But, well, to explain all that, There's a lot of things I'd need to explain to you, which we simply don't have a reasonable time frame for. Years of training, and all that."

Sora scratches his chin, wondering what the best way to explain it is, "Alright, we have three components to any spell; understanding, motions, and personal power. I think the best parallel is a video game, where spells would be 'cheat codes' as it were."

"The first component, understanding, is knowing where an effect comes from. unless you know that, to create a fireball, you have to draw from the plane of fire, and put that fire here on the material plane. In any given video game, you need to look up what a cheat is, so that you can present it later in-game."

"The second is motions. This is generally verbal and somatic, though it can also require a material component or focus. This is you entering the code into the game." he pats the messenger bag, "The rune I wrote onto the notebook is an example of that."

"The third component is your own essence being put into it. You need to have enough personal energy to power the spell in question once you've activated it. In the video game example, this would be pressing 'enter' after the cheat is put in; without the code in the first place, you're just mashing the Enter key. Without the enter key, the cheat will never be put into effect."

"Part of that 'years of training' is making yourself have the magical strength to handle spellcraft, though the understanding part is in there too. It's a muscle, just like any other in the body; train it to make it strong, but it'll atrophy if you leave it sitting. Everybody has to start from the bottom and work their way up."

But you talk about this like it's an extremely difficult skill to learn... we've encountered people who claim to have such abilities naturally." Gods, Dex has so many questions he wants to ask this man. He could be the next step in Earth's evolution - power over reality itself. But it's best to start simple.

Sora smiles, "In wizardry, we call natural talents 'Sorcerers'. they're individuals whose minds either stumbled onto how to control magic when they were young by accident and grew up learning it inherently, or those who have a natural power source through an odd bloodline."

"Don't get me wrong, they aren't any less powerful than a wizard, even if they are less trained. In fact, many are more powerful. Those who go out to learn it rather than having the skill inherently, though, well, it's difficult for us. We start later in life because we don't have the power from birth or pudberty, so our magical presence is often weaker to start, thus taking longer to train to respectable levels. On top of this, learning the complex formulas needed for quite a few spells can be trying. I envy those who can come by it naturally; would have saved me a lot of hard work."

"Now you suggested that one of the ways these sorcerers come by magic is through bloodlines. But how do they activate it? You've told me your method. Sorcerer's sound more like psionics on my planet - they think things and those things happen. Much simpler, and much more fantastic." Though he won't admit it, Dexter's more interested in sorcerers than he is wizards. The bloodline bit, mostly... if they could replicate that with Elexxion cloning tech, one might see an ESA magic department within the next few months. The possibilities are endless. "The difference there is, we can quantify where the impulses thrust upon reality come from. There's a part of the psionic's brain that we've been picking at for years."

Forcefields flicker and spark under the barrage, Aerie's shields stopping most of the rounds, and the fact that presumably, with his brain fried, he's not terribly accurate, meaning that of those that do get through, most miss her completely, taking chunks out of the floor, or the others fleeing, though one grazes her side, ripping the flesh away, and carving a deep gouge her armor, while another bites deep into one of the weapons systems she unfolded from her back, disabling it, at least for now.

Still, she's hardly out of the fight yet, though she doesn't do any more attacking at the moment, instead ducking back behind their improvised barrier, and looking around for a good target.

Meanwhile, as Belladonna's target falls, she fires again, a three-round burst, this one aiming to catch him in the torso, though she doesn't wait to see the results of her attack before turning to where the fallen weapon Mia was using lies, stowing the midling's gun as she does.

Once the more powerful weapon is in her hands, she takes careful aim at one of the remaining Assault Beasts, and fires five rounds at its head, should there be any weak spots there, the schematics in her head, combined with her various scanners, serving admirably to locate them.

Mia, though still incapacitated, twitches slightly, the severed nerves that were preventing her from using her right arm already healed, which she, as quickly as she can in her current state, uses to inject similar nanobots to those she's using to repair herself into Arachne, healing the lesser damage that the other Escort suffered in perhaps a minute, at most.

At which, since Mia is clearly still alive, somehow, she gently pushes the close-combat unit out of her lap, and blurs up a nearby support column, two pairs of weapons like those in Aerie's back extending from her sides, and, once she reaches the ceiling, raining energy pellets down on the battlefield, especially the team pinning down the rest of the group.

Sora says, "Sorcery as I understand it just sort of builds up and requires an outlet. unless the sorcerer has a teacher, they just master a few simple incantations over time have fun with it. I won't fault them for that; magic is a tool to be used, even if you use it for frivolous things. Hells, I've even got a spell that shaves my face in the morning for me." He chuckles.

"As for where Sorcererous bloodlines come from, well, there's a few sources. Anything that's quite powerful by birth and can intermingle with humanoids can create a mage. Demons, dragons, and celestials are fairly prevalent sources of bloodlines, though more esoteric sources exist." He holds his tail out, "Just as an example of demonic blood; this isn't an augmentation. I was born with it."

"Oddly enough, I might have actually been a sorcerer; certainly I had a quick enough grasp of spellcraft, I have demons in my heritage, and I'm more accomplished in magic than most people my age, but my mother pushed pushed me towards wizardry when I was a child, and my power likely wouldn't have manifested until puberty."

"Demons. Huh," Dexter muses, his mind flying to Evanasgrix and his... heritage. He's even got magical powers. "Is there a chance we could take some of your blood?"

Aerie may possess a toolkit for self-repair, in the event that the damage to her armament is too extensive. Otherwise, there's few advances for her to worry about at the moment.

That is, at least, until Belladonna attracts the assault beast's attention. It shuts its mouth in time to avoid any shots on its weak, fleshy bits, and instead retaliates with a laser attack. The light sweeps across the improvised cover that the Revenant teams have been using, leaving glowing orange lines wherever it goes. The scored concrete and rebar glows hotter, right up until the point when it explodes. In a shower of molten debris, their cover suddenly disappears. However, the delay is sufficient for a real combat Escort to escape unscathed.

A wounded one, however, might need some help.

And just as the assault teams take aim for their final salvo, which may well've spelled doom for one or two of our intrepid heroines, they're shredded from above. Defenseless but for cheap, mass-produced body armor, the frontline ESA troopers are instantly incapacitated. Arachne will find the garage clear all the way up to the melee with the Assault Beasts, which is still going strong. A gap. Perhaps a way to escape.

"Certainly. Now, ziz may not change your outward appearance, but be aware that these are still prosthetics," the good doctor says, handing her a holo-chart with flashy looking images. They'll explain the exact perameters for augmentation and limb replacement. On top of that, there is a list of weapons available for such small spaces.

"That's phenomenal, Mr. Emeral. I'll look forward to your results," Naitiri says with a little smile.

The prosthetics include places the doctor mentioned, as well as weapons placed in the fingers, eyes, chest, on the side of the head, or even in the leg someplace.

As for weaponry, there's too many choices to count. Blades, projectile weapons, projected energy in every color of the rainbow. Flechette launchers, plasma cutters, and ion cannons are very popular with people from Elexxion's world. Mostly because they're all excellent at disabling heavily augmented foes and all their myriad ilk. Regeneration is particularly ineffective against weapons like the cutter and the ion cannon. The ionized particles tend to disable nanomachines and other unshielded electronics, while the cutter ensures quick kills in rapid succession against even the most durable enemies.

Sora chuckles, "I thought as much. Let me tell you this then; cloning is something mages have been doing a long time. Simulacrums and outright cloning is one of the few paths to immortality for those that don't want to become undead. If you'd just told me, I would have simply agreed. We're not so different here, we just happen to have different specializations."

"A fair warning though; you're going to have to figure out some way to prevent a magical buildup. If I'm right, the clones will simply burn themselves to death if they're not expending energy."

"Hm... if we hybridize them, make them part machine, we might be able to run their batteries on magic," Dexter theorizes to himself, rapidly tapping on a holo-pad. "Why does this build up occur? You don't look burnt out."

"Simply put, I actually have a mind. If too much builds up, the muscle gets sort of 'restless', I suppose, and does its best to do something with the energy. Like how cats and dogs that have been cooped up too long start tearing around the house, no matter what they break in the process."

"I cast spells every day, mostly to keep myself clean and protected from weather extremes. I've got a spell that lets me shave in the morning without any more hassle than saying a few words."

"So... keeping them on mundane tasks should release the energy... How interested would you be in training some of these clones?" Dexter asks. A staff mage, even if he's not really hired, could be very handy. "You're already being heavily compensated. Wanna make s'more cash?"

Arachne, meanwhile, safe on the ceiling, blurs towards the Assault Beast that just shot at the other three, a pair of 'mandibles', actually the endpoints of a plasma cutter, sprouting from her jaw as she does.

Should she be able to get over it unhindered, another set of limbs unfolds from her back; each secures a line of something resembling extraordinarily resilient spiderweb, though it's actually a synthetic polymer, manipulated by way of forcefields, that fuses with most other substances on contact, at least until it's had a chance to become inert, to the ceiling, then drops down on those, as fast as she can without injuring herself, performing a flip around her center of gravity, much like a trapeze artist, and then turning the tips of her 'spinnerettes' so that she's facing the massive creature and aligned the same way it is, as she does.

If all that goes smoothly, she sets her mandibles against its back when she lands, and turns on the plasma cutter, then pulls her head back sharply, releasing a cloud of nanobots, designed to devour flesh and metal, from her pores at the same time.

Belladonna's movements go unnoticed until it's all but too late. The Auditors cameras aren't aimed at the ceiling, after all, and the assault beast certainly wasn't paying attention. She descends upon her prey and creates a deep gouge in its neck, the nano-machines exploiting the point of weakness in swarms. Though the outer armor is designed to repel such an assault, the inner veiny circuitry of the inner neck is quite vulnerable.

The assault beast's neck falls limp, then writhes in place, trying to stay upright. If it isn't out, it should be down. However, Belladonna's left exposed atop the beast, and a hail of gunfire meets her daring assault.

((A harness isn't a form of augmentation, really. You require augments to use one, but the harnesses are more like varying forms of powered armor than anything else. They transform standard humans into living weapons.

She can be as extensively augmented as a Revenant without becoming one. The real difference between a cyborg abhuman and a Rev is that the Revenant's got cybernetic brains. Owned and programmed by Elexxion to a large degree.

Things like a visible prosthetic, a line parting the flesh and metal, or even distinctive lights are very common. With enough money, any aug can be hidden - and such things are normally more expensive. With Alia getting hers for free, her more extensive augments will be much more visible. For instance, if she chose Arachne's mouth augs, some manner of mandibles would likely be visible, inwardly or on the outside.))
