That's a clear slander. Fallout 2 is way more offensive than DNF could ever dream of being. ;)

So we did go off topic. So what.

Ultimately games are about fun. I think that Fallout 2 is. If it's not your cup of tea, fine but it is mine and I still strongly recommend it. However, you're correct, New Vegas does take the same approach to the wasteland as Fallout 2 and being a newer game is probably much easier to swallow.

Mega Man 3 is an older game that's stood up pretty well. It was my introduction to the series and it's still one of my favorites, right up there with 6, and the original Mega Man X.

If it hasn't been mentioned yet, add Beyond Good and Evil to the list. It is a great game that was critically acclaimed, but mostly missed by the public. Today it remains a cult classic.

It is also very divisive, not very easy to get into and had a very mediocre critical and public reception. I don't know if it is good or bad, but from everything I know it isn't a simple game to pick up and play and when a lot of people just don't like it, it probably isn't a terribly good recommendation for this.

Have you actually played it? It's very easy to get into, and clearly the public loved it because it's hailed as a cult classic.

Uhhh, to be a cult classic something has to not be very popular, but have a devoted fanbase. If it was popular then it'd just be a hit and might become a classic if it has staying power. In any case, no, I haven't played it, which is why I didn't give thoughts on the actual quality of the game, all I'm saying is to keep the audience in mind and that it seems more like the kind of thing you play when you have a solid grasp of what you like and don't like. Kinda like arthouse movies or hard science fiction.

And I haven't denied that. I'm just saying that it's got a relatively niche appeal, there's nothing wrong with that, it's not like several of my favorite pieces of entertainment aren't quite niche.

I don't know about that one. I played it after getting my PS2, and I was disappointed with it. My favorite part was how hilarious I found the enemy AI during stealth sections. I always found myself wondering what was going through those guards' heads: "Oh no, that girl ran around a corner! We'll never catch her now. Better call in this drone to shoot at a bunch of places we can clearly see she isn't at and return to our posts. Oh, and shut down those energy barriers that are trapping her in here and we can just walk through thanks to our armor, we completely don't have any use for those right now."

But yeah, outside of that, I found it to be a pretty mediocre game. Short, pretty simple and unimpressive gameplay, the story was remarkably straightforward and black and white (which was a disappointment given its title), and I recall ending up just confused by the ending. I really don't know why everyone on the internet who says anything about it seems to love it.

The title was a product of some executive deciding to be clever and force them to use a Sartre quote. The original title was Between Good and Evil, which does make more sense. As for the ending, that's what happens when a story meant to be in three parts ends at the end of the first one.

Long time, no post-y! So, so sorry dear reader base for my long absence...life has certainly had a lot in store for me these past weeks. I've both up and moved cities and was with my family as my dad passed~thank you for your kind words, everyone.

Now that things are back to some sort of normalcy I continue on with my gaming commentary! I believe I have left to discuss: Civ IV, Assassin's Creed and Portal...that right, Koury? Current games in progress include Final Fantasy XII and Guild Wars 2 (though I almost can't even say the latter, because so little time has been devoted to it).

In the coming weeks I'm sure you'll all tire of hearing from me , because I am determined to get down these thoughts of mine. Prepare yourselves...it's going to be epic. And hey, maybe it even will be! Just the other day Koury and I were talking with my roommate and her boyfriend about my dabbling, and she stared at us blankly. I'll make a convert of her yet! (I just need to get my thoughts together first so as to make a compelling argument).

I also think it needs to be said that dabbling is really the right word. To ease me in and so that I could focus solely on the story, Koury has, more time than not, been at the controls . Towards the end of Portal I manned up and tried my hand at movement, and let's just say I need a lot more practice. But I have faith that I'll get there. Encouragement welcomed! I too have visions of teaming up with Koury's Modern Warfare team and taking names...

Alright everyone, so the break has been a long one, but it looks like it coming to an end soon. The time was needed though, with all of the things that happened to SHeRUBI and her family. She's been expressing a strong interest to restart this thread for a while now, so I've went ahead and gotten the green light from the mods to continue here.

So! Let me take this moment to catch up you guys on the last month and a half-ish, game-wise. I know SHeRUBI still plans on doing a write up of her Civ 4, Assassin's Creed and Portal playthroughs, but we've also done a good amount of gaming since. She has even taken the controller herself recently, with positive results.

We have been trodding our way through FF12. Currently on our way to King Raithwalls Tomb. She is progressing through Limbo and in the middle of her own campaign in XCOM: EU. She also has a fondness for games like Harvest Moon and Recettear, both of with she has played, albeit only partially so far.

As far as her playing games herself, she's done XCOM completely on her own, along with Limbo. She can pretty much play any game that doesn't use a first person, dual stick control scheme (she hasn't tried first person on a PC yet).

Anyway, yeah, we're back. Feel free to show your support for her, she has appreciated the feedback and commentary she received from you guys so far, and I know she's looking forward to more discussions about games themselves as well as how they differ from what she may have thought of them before experiencing them.

Look for a post from her hopefully within a day or so.

Building up to that! Baby steps, baby steps . It is a whole different experience, taking control, to go from watching to doing. Feeling the direct consequences of missteps, but also a swell of pride when victorious (as articulated so well in a recent GameInformer article...there are not many places that we get immediate feedback for a job well done. Even the smallest step forward brings congratulations). I'm excited to progress!

If dual stick is causing problems, trying out single stick/buttons on the N64, either in Goldeneye, or Perfect Dark is a great middle step. I played those like that for a long time, and it made the transition easier.

She's playing on Normal. She didn't want to miss out on the "make a mistake and you pay dearly" aspect of the game by going with easy, but didn't want to be overly punished for learning as well by going with anything harder. She also enabled Ironman mode. Shes survived a few fights now, and everyone in her inital team has earned their nicknames.

    All in all, pretty good.

If I had a 64, that'd be a great suggestion. I am hoping that PC 1st person can help bridge the gap, but thats more out of not having any other ideas than because I think its the better route to go.

Civilization IV. Okay, it had me hooked at its introduction song (which may or may not be playing as I type this out). I had heard tell of the turn-based strategy (my first experience with this type of game play, and I liked the pacing out of time~Suggest more?), but knew no more than it's a popular play, like Sims.

    Decisions/Strategy
Then Koury purchased it for his playing pleasure, and I had myself a look. First decision I made: channel Napoleon, learn from the French leader's mistakes (for instance, I did not wander too far north). Who I was up against/was to befriend (though I think the furthest I got with any of them was mere contentment): Darius, Franklin Roosevelt, Isabella, Kublai Khan, Montezuma, Qin Shi Huang, Ragnar, Saladin, Sitting Bull, Suleiman.

Immediately I began researching archery, wanting to build some might...vive la France! Seeing that my next-door neighbor had some horses whinnying around, it was high time I invade. After a victorious campaign, one would think that I would strive for an all out win via war. Satisfying as the bloodbath was, and as Napoleonic, I thought I'd try my hand at being the first to Alpha Centauri.

A technology-based strategy saw me through to the end and showed how development in this manner directly correlated to my strength. It's easy to link technology and weaponry, but it is something else to see the teasing out of how war elephant turns to tank with Industrialism, Rifling. And some steps in between .

I'm interested in hearing your approach to world domination, and why you made the choices you did. Koury said that militarily was the most common, and I'd like to know if that was your choice, what was your reasoning beyond oh, it feels good to beast other civilizations

    History Lesson
My favorite aspect of the game was seeing history play out in new ways. For instance, Ragnar, Viking king, was naturally building up his navy to (almost) rival my own. Characters' are shaped by their past, corresponding figure, and civilizations' bonuses are directly related to what happened back in the day.

This got me thinking that our teachers could very well encourage game play to bring history (considered to be a tired subject) to life. Wouldn't that just be the best way to pace out a world history class? Play out different eras, see cause and effect play out with pixels.

Speaking of cause and effect, there too does Civilization triumph! Researching items and unlocking other technologies upon their finishing shows how interconnected progress is. How crucial minute technologies are, really. Because to move forward, a lot of times you are going to have to have a knowledge of say, mathematics.

I'm curious to see what you think of games as teaching aids...which, if any, should teachers recommend? How can gaming be used in new ways?

Late Nights...and where I leave you
And here, with beloved Civilization, I learned to burn the midnight oil. I'd say oh, sleep after one more turn. War trumpets sounded, and no way was I sleeping after that! I began to remember the days of obsessing over Amazon Trail achievements...

    Good to be back
