Re: Pirates of the Aether
"I would prefer a proper burial for the late captain as well, but I don't think we could manage it Rok. Land is a precious resource, and unless we give her body to farmers as crop fertalizer, I doubt anyone would be willing to let us bury her on their land. We could try to do it discreetly, but then she wouldn't get the service she deserves. Its a sad truth, but I simply don't see a feasible way to bury the captain."

Re: Pirates of the Aether
'It's alright lad'. Kieran moves close to Rok.
'A sky burial ain't like that. The Cap'n will just drift off, into the care o'the Lady'.
'I ain't never told anyone this Rok, but when me da died 'board ship, and we heard the news, me ma took me to the isle's edge. Then we stood there, an' she told me what happens to those that the Lady cares for'.
Kieran's tone is gentle and comforting.
'If you're truly one of the sky-folk, and gave the Lady due respec' she'll take the yer soul into her care. If that's true fer the Cap'n then she'll be free, truly free forever, part of the boundless Skysea'.
Kieran's eyes have misted slightly.
'The Cap'n 'll always be around us, her spirit part o' the very eddies, guiding us. An' when ye look into a cloud sometimes we'll see her face lookin' back at us. An' when the weather's bad, and the Lady's favour turns, we'll know the Cap'n here, lookin' out for us'.
'Now I don't know if she followed the Lady, but if not, the Lady'll take care of her soul until her God comes to claim it'.
Kieran smiles
'An' of the other Gods are owt like Arryl's God, I'll can't imagine she'll wait long'.Spoiler

Re: Pirates of the Aether
The ballast is lashed onto the platform, the captain laid in repose upon it.
Somewhere in the gathered crew a song is begun.
"From the first, our light to thee.
Our voice, a hymn to misery.
We cast about in the dark,
Like fishers searching for the silver lark.
"Lady of the deep, lady of the night
Grant us passage though it be not right.
Without thy love to guide our feet,
We have no way home through rain and snow and sleet."

Re: Pirates of the Aether
Rok
*The man of a beast turns his attention to Kiernan as he speaks, his face blank as he listens, his eyes unblinking and still. Does the man really beleive this? The Lady will take you?*
*After Kier finishes speaking, Rok nods slowly, keeping his thoughts to himself - The Lady might take the Soul, but it was the body that Rok worried for. Looking among the crew, he takes inventory and realizes that only a few were with the Captain when they landed on Ground - when they'd found him. None of them had seen what happens down there. They didn't see the beasts that stalked the ravaged lands. They didn't see dead that stood up on their own.*
*It wasn't their fault - they just didn't know. Perhaps it was for the best. Let them hold their beleif in Ladies and Suns. Hope was a good thing.*

The balloon is released, and it floats up and out away from the ship.
Tears in their eyes the crew mutters that choosing a new captain can wait till the morrow.

Re: Pirates of the Aether
Arryl looks over the railing of the ship, and says "I'm sorry I wasn't by your side captain. Like I promised I would be...." he turns back and begins walking to his cabin. On his way past the other senior members of the crew he says "We should have a day of respect for the late captain before we choose another. I'm going to use the captains books to find a way to turn a profit at the next port. If one of us had died, the captain would still have made sure that the ship was running." with that he dissapears below decks.
Spoilerok, I've posted 3 times about looking at the manifest but haven't gotten anything yet. I don't know if you took it as a fluff piece or what, but I'm actually trying to see if we have anything in our hold. I was gonna suggest we use the money to pay the crew, and upgrade our ship to avoid WBL abuse, but I really would like to make a sale based on the ships inventory.Going out of town, of you don't hear from me by 11/20 send me a poke

Re: Pirates of the Aether
Just before the funeral, Kieran hurriedly disappears below decks to the crew quarters and opens his sky-chest. Then Kieran changes out of his bloody shirt, and quickly tries to clean himself up with some water from the butt kept in the crew quarters and a little mirror.
Then Kieran heads up above decks, and watches the funeral service sombrely. As the sheet lifts and the body carried into the aether, Kieran feels a sharp tug in his chest. He gazes, as the white chute gleams in the orange sunlight and disappears off into the clouds.
It's beautiful, and terrible. I've never thought about it before, but what they did to me - that day - was a mockery of a sky burial. Lady, this is hard to watch'.
The burial reminds him of a terrible promise he made years ago. Kieran's thoughts turn to his own mortality, and the saving of his own soul. At that moment, he's eager to speak with Arryl, and make the arrangement needed for his own rites, but then Arryl sweeps off, and the moment's gone.
Instead, Kieran joins with the rest of the crew in hauling up a barrel of rum from the hold, and drawing glasses of it, as the twilight sweeps over the ship.
'Men, to the Capt'n. Lady take her'.
'Lady take her' they echo, and the wake begins. Soon they're making merry, and Kieran knocks back glass after glass of the rotgut rum. The crew cavort drunkenly about, laughing and crying, and sharing stories of the Captain, and other shipmates, long gone. Stories of happy times, now tinged with nostalgia and sadness.
Kieran's griefs sweep over him. Every so often he howls and slumps against a bulkhead and whether he's laughing bitterly or crying desperately even he can't tell. Each time Kieran washes away the melancholy with another glass of the rum.
It does nothing. Kieran is gripped by a sudden fear that he won't be able to keep any of his promises. An image gradually builds in his head, of a woman and two children, until everything else disappears, and Kieran passes out to dream on the image.
In dreaming, he forgets his fears, and the past, and for a few sunlit hours he is together and happy with his family again.Spoiler

Re: Pirates of the Aether
Aimari is at the funeral. Of course, many of the people there would easily overlook her if it were not for her fiery red cloak. Despite her appearance, Aimari easily bended into the background of events such as this. It helped, of course, that most of the attendees had eyes for nothing but the captain's balloon. Their grief made it easy to stay out of their sight and mind. This suited her pretty well - Aimari had never been the type to talk to people and she generally didn't enjoy being talked to. It was only worse at such large gatherings. As such, it was nice that nobody tried to engage her in conversation.
Of course, Aimari's own concentration was on her feelings. As a second-tier master of the Soul's Flame, she was adept at channeling her emotions. The death of the captain had incited feelings she had thrust into the churning vortex of her anger, fueling the flame until it was strong enough to burn the men attacking the ship. Until now she hadn't really stopped to think about what her feelings were. The captain had been a good person - she didn't bother Aimari much, but she wasn't a spineless fool either. Her death had come totally unexpectedly, too.
Aimari didn't generally feel sad. She was content with her life - at times, she had awoken to each new day with great excitement (although this was due primarily to one person), but the majority of her time was spent without negative emotions. Of course, her hate was always there, but on the ship it didn't flare up much so it was normally just there, under the surface, comforting Aimari with its presence. As such, she didn't really know how to deal with the unhappiness she felt due to the captain's death.
Once the drinking began, Aimari was glad that she tended to be overlooked. Alcohol was a strange stuff, but ultimately one to be avoided. The flames it brought were entirely unreal and transitory - anyone seeking power from them would find themselves without its aid after a short surge of strength. She didn't look down on the crew for drinking themselves into a stupor - perhaps it was their only way to deal with the sadness of losing their captain.
As the night grew longer, Aimari withdrew from the still-lively crew to her personal quarters, meditating on her anger for a short time before going to bed, a feeling of sadness still with her.

Erin was at the funeral as well. Helping the rest of the crew deal with the loss of the captain. This was done to hide his own grief. He hadn't been part of the crew for long, but he had grown to like the captain.

Maia stands in the shade, rigid as she watches the balloon float off. She seems to be whispering to herself, and hasn't blinked for quite a long time. Her hands seem to moving with a will of their own, sharpening her blades and going through motions that any student of the arcane would recognize as belonging to s few particularly nasty spells.

Re: Pirates of the Aether
Arryl looks over his charts and notes. "Some aetherlite and some fruit." he says aloud to himself. He checks the price they bought it at and compares it to the demand in Serzai. In the middle of solving the problem he stops and sighs. He reaches over to his footlocker and pulls out a small bottle of cheap rum. "Here's to you Cap." he says, his usual eloquence gone. He takes a deep swig from the bottle then gasps from the burn. He's obviouslly not a frequent drinker.
He runs his fingers through the shorter feathers that his kind had instead of hair, and sighed again. "I swore I would be there to protect you, and I failed. Hell, I couldn't even see you before you died. So here's to you Captain." he takes another deep swig, and is already red in the face from the alcohol.
"And here's to my promise." he shouts and throws the bottle at the wall. It shatters loudly, and what little remained of the rum splashes across the wall. He walks over to the bottle shards with glowing hands. It reassembles, but empty of rum. He roughly clears a space on the desk and places a sheet of paper down. He begins writing in jerky script:
Oh you with the mask, standing atop the mountain
Who knows what your face really looks like?
A somber smile is plastered on your shell
So that you may keep fighting the good fight
Your allies and friends can't see the mask
For to them its always been your face
Why would they expect different from you?
Their need keeps you in your place
But when the sun has gone down
And the last enemy fades
You will take off your mask
And show your true face
The tears will be laid plain
For the frineds that you lost
And pain will reveal
Your not as string as you talked
When you give all of yourself to helping others
What's left to give yourself?
As he reaches the end of the poem, he realizes that its not even a poem anymore. He also realizes that he was drunk. He crumples the paper and throws it at the wall. Then he stares at the unmoving lump dissapointedlly. "I liked *hic* the bottle better." then he opens the door and stumbls into the hall.Spoilersorry for the wall of text I didn't intend for this to be so long. Used make whole to fix the bottle.Going out of town, of you don't hear from me by 11/20 send me a poke

Re: Pirates of the Aether
The crew gathered about on deck to cast thier votes for captain. Some it wasn't fair to Captain Reya, some others thought they didn't need one, but most seemed to believe that Kieran would not steer them wrong.
An hour and a handful of small fistfights later, it was decided. Kieran is now the captain of the Lady's Gambit.
The kingdom of Serazi is spread over a hundred islands large and small, but when one talks of Serazi itself, they mean the ancient and revered City of Silver. It is not hard to see how the city got this name. Miles out, you can see the sunlight reflecting off of the silver spires that reach up to pierce the skies. Thousands of delicate fingers, all of them reaching.
You are perhaps an hour away from dock, when a message raven lands on deck, carrying a message for Captain Reya.
"Your escort is ready, we are prepared to recieve you in the Grand Hall.'

Re: Pirates of the Aether
After the vote, Kieran had retreated to Captain Reya's cabin - he wasn't ready to start thinking of it as his, even though Rok had kindly moved his sky chest, containing his scant possessions, up from the hold.
So, Captain again. What does this mean Lady? Is it a joke?A cruel twist of fate? Or a second chance? Either way, if it's in my power, I'll make sure it doesn't end like last time.
This is going to be hard. I now need to be at a distance from the men I shared food, rum and dirty jokes with but a day before. Everyone will second guess my decisions. If I don't hold it together, we'll all suffer.
Kieran resolved to start upon his duties and started a fresh logbook.
...........................
Two days later the message came for Captain Reya.
'All officers to me quarters'. Kieran intones, loudly, but without shouting.
Master Bermond! You have the helm. Keep us on this course for Serzai, and maintain altitude. Master Arryl's winds should bring us in safe'.Spoiler

Re: Pirates of the Aether
Aimari doesn't vote - to her, it doesn't really matter who the captain is. She wasn't very good at judging people, anyways, so it wasn't like she could tell who would be the best suited. The captain's job was far removed from her - they had to deal with all of the crew, whereas she didn't want to have anything to do with them.
As the new captain announces the first officer's meeting of his office, Aimari follows the others, wordless as usual. For the last few days she had been considering where their new quest would take them, which was a fairly unusual thing for her. The thoughts during the captain's funeral had led her to consider how things were going back home. Their current course actually led them fairly close to an area where she could go there from.
She wasn't planning on leaving the ship, but the thoughts of her home brought a nostalgic feeling with them. Happier times, in a way. Especially after a certain chance encounter...

Re: Pirates of the Aether
Rok
*The vote for Captain was an easy one for Rok. Kier said he'd been captain before, so it would be him until he showed himself incompetent - something that wasn't likely to happen.*
*As a few of the men brawled it out, he watched silently, not taking his normal enjoyment out of the contests. They weren't fight for fun. They were fights to give the old an honorable goodbye and welcome in the new. They were needed.*
*The next couple days, he remains quiet for the most part, excercising daily, as he always has, but he keeps mostly to himself other than that. When the Captain calls out for a gathering, he rises from his spot near the bow and moves to the door, sticking his massie head in.*
"Rok here, Captn Kier. No smash here, yes? "
*With a heavy sigh, he shrugs, accepting the idea with resignation.*

Re: Pirates of the Aether
As soon as the vote was over, Maia made her way down to her small cabin, near the bow of the ship. When she had first come to the ship, she slept in the crew hold, along with all the rest of the non-officers. Some of the crew had thought to use the small woman for their own purposes, thinking that she could not defend herself. She kept the two men alive for three days in the cargo hold, their screams magically silenced. After that, the captain had given Maia a cabin and a purpose.
Her cabin is sparse, only a hammock, a sky chest, and a few cleverly carved nooks and holes. Maia retrieves her weapons and the kit to care for them. It is a nightly ritual, every move of the whetstone and swipe of the oil carefully choreographed. The shape and weight of each blade, the curve of her bow, they are as familiar as anything else in Maia's world. The ritual keeps Maia centered, allowing her to escape her own thoughts for a time. It is just the opposite with the next ritual. Maia draws out her spellbook, and prepares the spells she will need for the next day. Each spell is a roaring inferno of power in her mind, which she compresses into a point of far greater intensity with nothing but her will, and then binds with the words and motions of power. When a spell is released, she unties the not, allowing the power to flow out and change the world. This ritual completed, Maia goes through a few more, each in their own place, and each with their own steps, and then retires to bed. The flight to Serazi should not be challenging.
----------------------
She is on deck when the raven arrives. When Kieran Captain, not Kieran anymore. Captain. calls a meeting, she makes her way over. Maybe we'll find out what is going on.07/03/2018: I’m back. The long break was necessary.

'Good to see of ye. No doubt ye all saw the messenger raven arrive a few moments ago. This was it's message'.
Kieran shows the message to the officers.
'I still don't ken what this is about, and I don't like it, but this is our chance to get some answers. Now I sugges' we send a reply informin' them o'Capt'n Reya's death. Then dock as normal. I think that they're most likely after the circlet that we found'.
Kieran puts the open box onto the desk.
'We don'nae ken what Cap'n Reya's business was, but it seems likely there would be a reward for finishing it. I plan on picking it up. Could be that the people we're handing this to are not it's rightful owners, or at least that there be others who'd take a different view. 'I plan on leadin' the shore party, with Arryl as me counsellor, Rok fer muscle, and Aimari and Erin as back up. If Lynn's feelin' better we'll take him too. Re: Pirates of the Aether
Aimari silently raised an eyebrow as Arryl and Maia respond to the captain's question. Strange that they had such an odd name for their abilities. After a moment Aimari realized that Kieran was probably expecting a reply from her, as well - for him, Channels were probably...what had he said? "Spells"? Well, he probably put them all in the same category.
"I have fire," is all Aimari whispers, her eyes downcast. The tattoos on her face continue their slight shifting, coming to a halt only as she speaks, as if anticipating something. Her ethereal flame-necklace is barely visible in the shadows of her hood.

"Curst mag....ericks. D'on do no gud. If it so strong, why need Rok, eh?"
*He picks up his massive axe and spins it around with a vicious smile.*

At the dock, Kieran makes sure that he has his officers present, and steps forward smartly to meet the soldier.
'Greetin's Major. I regret to inform ye of Capt'n Reya's untimely death. I am Capt'n Swiftsure, elected in her place. The Capt'n gave us to understand she had unfinished business here, so we've come to complete it fer her'.
Kieran motions to Arryl to produce the box that they found in the Captain's cabin, but to keep it shut.
'I believe this may be what ye're looking fer?'

Re: Pirates of the Aether
Aimari looks up, nodding.
---
Aimari stands with the other officers, hands folded under her cloak. The hood is, for once, down and she looks straight ahead, avoiding looking at anyone. Her facial tattoos move only slightly, the slight shifting nearly invisible from a distance. Aimari's typical braid disappears into her cloak, her bangs as always going out to the sides of her face, kept in place by the crimson hair pieces. In the sun her hair and eyes look brighter than they usually do, and occasionally a glimmer of gold or red comes from beneath her cloak, as the light touches it.

Re: Pirates of the Aether
Two hours ago.
Kieran waits until the other officers have left the room, then addresses Aimari.
'We dinnae ken each other too well lass, do we? Ye've been on this ship fer a lot longer than me, and I wonder, what are ye doin' here? I've been watching ye carefully the last two days, and I just cannae figure ye'.
Kieran continues.
'Forgive me, I may not be the brightest, but I can usually see what drives people, and what they get out of this crew. With Lynn, fer example, I think it's the quest fer knowledge. Rok, funnily enough, I think gets companionship. With Arryl, I'm not too sure, but he's a been Priest, so I think it's likely either penance or atonement. Erin - probably looking for adventure. Fer me...
Kieran looks ashen faced for a moment.
'Fer me it's redemption. Ye remind me most of Maia. Maia's what I'd call a regular bottle covey - sometimes she just wants t'stick a knife in the world. But if ye're straight with her, and give pay, drink, and the occasional chance to cut loose, ye know where ye stand.
Then we have you. A mere slip of a girl - shy and humble, somehow surviving on a ship full of sailors. Yet in battle I've seen ye crisp grown men and suddenly come alive, amidst the screams and sizzling o'the dyin'. So to cut to th' question: what are ye doin aboard this ship lass? And can we depend on ye when our backs are to the wall?'Spoiler

Re: Pirates of the Aether
The major stiffens slightly. Not much but it is noticeable. "This... complicates matters, I think. But it is not for me to decide. Please, keep the cheat out of sight until we reach the palace."
Serazi is clean, far cleaner than any other city you have been to. Even the Low districts, and the poor are clean. You are escorted down streets wide enough for the Gambit to sail through, lined with buildings in neat rows. The trees bear silver leaves, silver grasses grow in gardens, and you realize that this is why Serazi is called the city of silver.
In the center of the city is a castle that dominates the skyline. It is protected by high walls, a redoubt, and you can just make out some other implacements to prevent an airship attack. You are lead through the outer gate, which been wrought in silver. You are led through the inner iron gate, and into a vast garden of silver grasses, with patterns of every manner of color spiraling throught it.
You are taken into the castle proper, where the silver theme continues through the halls and rooms. You are finally brought to what the major calls the Grand Hall.
"The king awaits you in here. Please be respectful, he is very old."
The doors open and the major marches in, striding up to the very tip of the silver rug running down the center of the room, and bows deeply.
"Your highness, the captain and crew of the Lady's Gambit."
The king looks all of you over. "Is this a trick? I o know my daughter likes to play games, but where is she? Hiding behind you big fellow?" he asks, looking at Rok.
"Come now Reya, we have much to work on. Did you have to bring your entire ship with you?"
