Re: Hello and Welcome New Members, Thread 10
OK.
So, it's taken me forever to register here. You could say that I've been a long time reader of both the comic and the boards (I've gotten some really great character build advice through here) but never bothered to register until today.
I guess the next dillemma; should I draw my own avatar?

Hello everyone! I got into Pathfinder last year and have been lurking the forums since then for all the awesome tabletop discussion that goes on. Decided it was finally time to register. I'm also going through the comic (and Darths and Droids) now that I finally get the jokes!

Re: Hello and Welcome New Members, Thread 10
Hello, Everyone. I too wished to join the choir of new voices currently presenting in this thread.
I come to you from the cold kingdom of Denmark in the North and make my daily living by working as a psychologist and have DM’ed D&D for the last 15 years of my life.
It’s somewhat strange that I have been an avid fan and reader of OOTS for so long, and yet never got around checking out the forums. It seems like a great place with some friendly people around, so I look very much forward to meet you all.

Re: Hello and Welcome New Members, Thread 10
Hello All!
New member here if you didn't guess. I've been wandering the forums for awhile now, and have recently been reading OoTS so I figured I'd join. I play D&D 3.5 and homebrewing is exceedingly exciting to me (as also is alliteration ) and lately I have been contemplating making my own world to start my own campaign. I am an avid reader, currently reading a novel that is around 1200 pages. I love the hobbit (if you haven't realized already), both the book and the movie, though... the book will always seem better to me. I like the Harry Potter movies and books, though to me the books are definitely better because I love detail, which is why I want to completely create my own new world, but I also want to keep it exciting, and I don't want to have to give hour long descriptions to my players!
So thus I will be wandering the homebrew forums most frequently, but I probably won't post for awhile.
Yay so that's me!
Have a good evening/day/night/morning everyone!

Re: Hello and Welcome New Members, Thread 10
So... hi.
I'm a fan of the Order of the Stick, like RPGs and playing them, and have been following the comic since 2006 or so; before Miko fell, at least. I never really had anything to say before, but... well, I guess I do nowadays.
I'll try joining some RPs as well, but I'll probably just post on occasion on the main comic forum.
Enjoy?

Re: Hello and Welcome New Members, Thread 10
Welcome to the Playground! I'm almost-retired-avatarist and unusual poster Crimmy, and I invite you all to go over to the Arts and Crafts section to request custom avvies (if you want, of course).
Should you want to go play Silly Message Board Games, you can play those over the SMBG section (or play structured games like Werewolf on it's subsection, Structured games).Last edited by Crimmy : Tomorrow at 26:72 DM.

Hi, everyone! I've been coming here for at least the last two or three years. I've been using it as a source for information and opinion on D&D. As I have started to expand into custom material, I thought I could use some help in balancing. That's why I decided to finally register. :)

Hey, everyone. I have been a long-time OOTS lover for years before, but I joined the forums in late 2012 and kind of forgot them for a while, so I never got around to doing this. But here I am now, so hey!

Re: Hello and Welcome New Members, Thread 10
Hi, I am a junior in high school and I have reading this comic for about a year. I love Square Enix RPGs such as Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Trigger and the Final Fantasy series, but I have never played D&D. From what I have seen in this comic and other tabletop-game-based webcomics and wikipedia and heard from my friend Tyler, I'm interested in trying D&D. I live in the Southern Westchester area near NYC and I want to know whether any knows about an open D&D campaign in that area in some public place like a comic book store or hobby shop. It would be nice if they were forgiving to people who are still learning the rules. I see myself as Neutral Good.
Also I have some general questions about D&D:
1) The success of most actions is controlled by dice right? So what role do stats play in affecting dice rolls?
2) Do I need to bring my own handbook and dice to play? If so, how much are they and where can I find them?
3) Do I have to create my character in advance or do I decide at the beginning of the campaign? Does the DM reveal my backstory as part of the story or do I make it up?
Not to stereotype, but it would nice if the people I were playing with were around my age, or at least in their early twenties if possible. Thanks.

Re: Hello and Welcome New Members, Thread 10
Hello, Propagandalf (love the name), Nightmares Echo, Psycho Yuffie, Xenrei, and n00bboy2013! Welcome to the forums
One thing to be aware of is that OotS is based on D&D version 3.5, which is no longer being supported. Many people still play 3.5 (myself included), but you will also find games using D&D 4th edition and Pathfinder (which is very similar to D&D 3.5). If you're looking for a game, you should decide which system you want to learn as that will effect what games you can play in. I don't know anything about games in game shops, but if you're interested in playing online, we do have a large Play by Post subforum.
Stats and other values from your class are added (or subtracted in the case of penalties) to the die rolls.
It depends. Most groups are willing to loan out dice for the first few sessions, but you can get a set of the 7 standard dice for ~$5 (or more if you want to get fancy) and it's a good investment if you decide you want to keep playing. You generally don't need your own handbook as long as there's one owned by the group that you can reference as needed. If you decide to learn D&D 3.5 or Pathfinder, there are also free online resources that have pretty much everything you need to get started: 3.5 SRD, Pathfinder SRD.
Your character is yours, the world belongs to the DM. Therefore you make up your own backstory. Do check with the DM to see if there's anything you should or shouldn't include, though (often they'll want a reason for you to be where the game starts, for example).
If you decide to learn D&D 3.5 or Pathfinder (I don't play D&D 4e), feel free to PM me questions -- I don't have time to run another game at the moment, but I'm always interested in helping new players get startedKnowledge is power.
